  • Wind-induced fluctuating internal pressures in a building with a dominant opening can be described by a second-order non-linear differential equation. However, the accuracy and efficiency of the governing equation in predicting internal pressure fluctuations depend upon two ill-defined parameters: inertial coefficient $C_I$ and loss coefficient $C_L$, since $C_I$ determines the un-damped oscillation frequency of an air slug at the opening, while $C_L$ controls the decay ratio of the fluctuating internal pressure. This study particularly focused on the value of loss coefficient and its influence factors including: opening configuration and location, internal volumes, as well as wind speed and approaching flow turbulence. A simplified formula was presented to predict loss coefficient, therefore an approximate relationship between the standard deviation of internal and external pressures can be estimated using Vickery's approach. The study shows that the loss coefficient governs the peak response of the internal pressure spectrum which, in turn, will directly influence the standard deviation of the fluctuating internal pressure. The approaching flow characteristic and opening location have a remarkable effect on the parameter $C_L$.

  • The effects of steep and shallow hills on a stationary tornado-like vortex with a swirl ratio of 0.4 are simulated and quantified as Fractional Speed Up Ratios (FSUR) at three different locations of the vortex with respect to the crests of the hills. Steady state Reynolds Averaged Naiver Stokes (RANS) equations closed using Reynolds Stress Turbulence model are used to simulate stationary tornadoes. The tornado wind field obtained from the numerical simulations is first validated with previous experimental and numerical studies by comparing radial and tangential velocities, and ground static pressure. A modified fractional speed-up ratio (FSUR) evaluation technique, appropriate to the complexity of the tornadic flow, is then developed. The effects of the hill on the radial, tangential and vertical flow components are assessed. It is observed that the effect of the hill on the radial and vertical component of the flow is more pronounced, compared to the tangential component. Besides, the presence of the hill is also seen to relocate the center of tornadic flow. New FSUR values are produced for shallow and steep hills.

  • The present study aims to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a pulsating axisymmetric air jet impinging on a heated wall. An axisymmetric contraction nozzle is used to obtain uniform profiles for the mean velocity and turbulence intensity at the nozzle exit. Measurements of the time averaged temperature on the impingement surface are conducted using a Thermochrornatic Liquid Crystal(TLC) technique for steady and pulsating jets at the jet Reynolds numbers of 20000, 30000 and 40000. Considered are pulsation frequencies of 10 and 20 Hz, corresponding to Strouhal numbers below 0.06 based on nozzle width and jet discharge velocity. In addition, the effect of nozzle-to-plate distances in the range of 2 to 10 on heat transfer characteristics is assessed. The pulsating impinging jet provides more uniform heat transfer coefficient near the impingement region, irrespective of H/D. Based on the measured data, a good correlation as a function of the jet Reynolds and Nusselt numbers is reported. It is also found that an exponent m in the relation of Nu ${\propto}\;Re^m$ depends on both r/D and H/D, by which the impinging jet flows are highly affected.

  • The use of lubrication oil is of many purposes and one among them is to drive the engine mounted on a ship. Hence the supply of clean lubrication oil is important. And an oil purifier is one of key components in marine diesel engines. At present, the element type full-flow oil filter has been widely used for cleaning the engine oil. The self-driven centrifugal oil purifier is a device which is used to remove the impurities in lubrication oil using a jet flow. The flow characteristics and the physical behaviors of particles in this self-driven oil purifier were investigated numerically and the filtration efficiencies were evaluated. For calculations, a Computational Fluid Dynamics method is used and the Shear Stress Transport turbulence model has been adopted. The Multi Frames of Reference method is used to consider the rotating effect of the flows. The influence of centrifugal forcehas been numerically investigatedto improve filtration efficiency of tiny particles. As a result of this research, it was found that the particle filtration efficiency using the only center axis rotating and outer wall rotating system are higher than that of the fully rotating system in the self-driven oil purifier.

  • The surface roughness depending on the machining method is very important because is produce a finished product through riveting, sealing, bonding, and special paint in order to curb the turbulence and air resistance which occur between the sheets. Aluminum alloy 2024 which is widely used for interior and exterior material of aircraft are tested. Jin-young JW-60C wire cutting machine was used in this experiment. In this paper, the experimental investigation has been performed to find out the influence of the surface roughness and surface shape characteristics on the wire-cut EDM of discharge energy in aluminium alloy 2024. The selected experimental parameters are peak current, no-load voltage, off time and feed rate. The experimental results give the guideline for selecting reasonable machining parameters. The high discharge energy on the idle time, almost no change in surface roughness can be seen.

  • In this study, the turbulent flow around a bluff body for different wind velocities was investigated numerically by using its two- and three-dimensional models. These models were tested to verify the validity of the simulation by being compared with experimental results which were taken from the literature. Variations of non-dimensional velocities in different positions according to the bluff body height were analysed and illustrated graphically. When the velocity distributions were examined, it was seen that the results of both two- and three-dimensional models agree with the experimental data. It was also seen that the velocities obtained from two-dimensional model matched up with the experimental data from the ground to the top of the bluff body. Particularly, compared to the front part of the bluff body, results of the upper and back part of the bluff body are better. Moreover, after comparing the results from calculations by using different models with experimental data, the effect of multidimensional models on the obtained results have been analysed for different inlet velocities. The calculation results from the two-dimensional (2D) model are in satisfactory agreement with the calculation results of the three-dimensional model (3D) for various flow situations when comparing with the experimental data from the literature even though the 3D model gives better solutions.

  • Aerodynamic characteristic of a small scale wind turbine under the influence of an incoming uniform wind field is studied using k-ω Shear Stress Transport turbulence model. Firstly, the lift and drag characteristics of the blade section consisting of S826 airfoil is studied using 2D simulations at a Reynolds number of 1×105. After that, the full turbine including the rotational effects of the blade is simulated using Multiple Reference Frames (MRF) and Sliding Mesh Interface (SMI) numerical techniques. The differences between the two techniques are quantified. It is then followed by a detailed comparison of the turbine's power/thrust output and the associated wake development at three tip speeds ratios (λ = 3, 6, 10). The phenomenon of blockage effect and spatial features of the flow are explained and linked to the turbines power output. Validation of wake profiles patterns at multiple locations downstream is also performed at each λ. The present work aims to evaluate the potential of the numerical methods in reproducing wind tunnel experimental results such that the method can be applied to full-scale turbines operating under realistic conditions in which observation data is scarce or lacking.

  • An active stimulating device (ASD) using a rope apparatus may operated by the flow of turbulence inside a cod end, generating variable stimuli in addition to flow-related effects to minimize the by-catch of juvenile fishes. Preliminary testing involved a hydrodynamic effect inside the cod end with a rotating rope kite or conical rope array to generate variable stimuli (visual stimuli, water flow, or physical contact with fish) to change fish position. The experimental rope kite offered more choice in rotating period and range of sweeping action; adjusting the towing line or flow velocity helped to drive fish toward the net panel and encouraged escape. The conical shape of the rope array in the cod end helped to clear a path for fish by disturbing the rigging and providing more contrast between objects, preventing an optomotor response. This enabled more black porgy to be herded toward the net at an early stage of towing. Therefore, either a conical rope array or a rotating rope kite can be used as an effective ASD to prevent juvenile by-catch.

  • An experimental investigation on heat transfer characteristics of two-dimensional heated blocks using a confined impinging slot jet has been performed. The effect of jet Reynolds number(Re=3900, 5800, 9700), streamwise block spacing(p/w=0.5, 1, 1.5) and dimensionless nozzle to block distance(H/B=1, 2, 4, 6) have been examined with five isothermally heated blocks. With the measurement of jet mean velocity and turbulence intensity distributions at nozzle exit, initially turbulent regimes, are classified. To clarify local heat transfer characteristics, naphthalene sublimation technique as used. The maximum Nusselt number at the stagnation point for the jet Reynolds number is occurred at H/B=4. Besides, the local and a average heat transfer of heated blocks increase with decreasing streamwise block spacing and increasing jet Reynolds number.

  • Performance characteristics of a small propeller fan are numerically investigated solving the continuity and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The Reynolds stresses for turbulent transport are modelled using a k-.epsilon. turbulence model. The present numerical procedure is constructed using the Finite Volume Method with the SIMPLE algorithms. The performance parameters obtained from the calculations are compared with the measured values for the various flow rates. A performance test of the fan shows different characteristics between a radial type at small flow rates and an axial type at large flow rates. Comparisons between the predictions and the measurements show that the predicted results are in good agreement with the measured values and reasonably reproduce the sharp variations of the power and head coefficient around a flow coefficient .PHI.=0.3. These comparisons indicate that the present numerical method is capable of resolving the performance characteristics with reasonable accuracy. At low flow rates, it is found that the flow enters the fan in an axial direction and is discharged radially outward at the tip which happens in the centrifugal fan. The centrifugal effect makes a significant difference in the characteristics of a fan at the low and high values of flow coefficient.
