A numerical analysis based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations has been carried out for double-circular-arc (DCA) compressor cascades. Two types of double-circular-arc cascades were used in this analysis. The appropriate turbulence model for compressor analysis was selected among the conventional turbulence models such as Baldwin-Lomax, k-$\varepsilon$ and k-$\varepsilon$ models. The results of current study were compared with available experimental data at various incidence angles. The 2-D and 3-D computational codes based on SIMPLE/PWIM algorithm for collocated grid and hybrid scheme for the convective terms were the main features of numerical tools. As commonly known, turbulence modeling is very important for the prediction of cascade flows, which are extremely complex with separation and reattachment by adverse pressure gradient. For selection of turbulence model, 2-D analysis was performed. And then, k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with wall function chosen as the reasonable turbulence model for 3-D calculation was used to increase the efficiency of computation times. A reasonable result of 3-D flow pattern passing through the double-circular-arc cascade was obtained.
A multiphase flow modeling approach equipped with a hybrid turbulence modeling method is applied to compute the gravity currents in a rectangular channel. The present multiphase solver considers the dense fluid, the less-dense ambient fluid and the air above free surface as three phases with separate flow equations for each phase. The turbulent effect is simulated by the IDDES (improved delayed detach eddy simulation), a hybrid RANS/LES, approach which resolves the turbulent flow away from the wall in the LES mode and models the near wall flow in RANS mode on moderately fine computational meshes. The numerical results show that the present model can successfully reproduce the gravity currents in terms of the propagation speed of the current heads and the emergence of large-scale Kelvin-Helmholtz type interfacial billows and their three dimensional break down into smaller turbulent structures, even on the relatively coarse mesh for wall-modeled RANS computation with low-Reynolds number turbulence model. The present solutions reveal that the modeling approach can capture the large-scale three dimensional behaviors of gravity current head accompanied by the lobe-and-cleft instability at affordable computational resources, which is comparable to the LES results obtained on much fine meshes. It demonstrates that the multiphase modeling method using the hybrid turbulence model can be a promising engineering solver for predicting the physical behaviors of gravity currents in natural environmental configurations.

It is experimentally well-known that high anisotropies of the turbulent flow field are dominant inside the tip leakage vortex, which is attributable to a substantial proportion of the total loss and constitutes one of the dominant mechanisms of the noise generation. This anisotropic nature of turbulence invalidates the use of the conventional isotropic eddy viscosity turbulence models based on the Boussinesq assumption. In this study, to check whether an anisotropic turbulence model is superior to the isotropic ones or not, the results obtained from the steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulations based on the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model and the Reynolds stress model (RSM) are compared with experimental data for two test cases: a linear compressor cascade and a forward-swept axial-flow fan. Through this comparative study of turbulence models, it is clearly shown that the RSM, which can express the production term and body-force term induced by system rotation without introducing any modeling, should be used to predict quantitatively the complex tip leakage flow, especially in the rotating environment.

It has been suggested that turbulent effect should be considered for the study of highly unstable detonation of hydrocarbon fuels, as in the case of pulse detonation engine (PDE). A series of numerical study are carried out to understand the characteristics of the highly unstable detonation by considering viscosity, turbulence model and turbulence-combustion interaction model. Through studies of the different levels of modeling, it is understood that the viscosity and turbulence have negligible effects on low frequency characteristics, but tend to enhance the high frequency characteristics. It is also considered that the turbulence-chemistry interaction model should be taken the influence of the activation energy into account for detonation studies.

In the present study, in order to analyze a turbulent flow in a square sectiond 180.deg. bend, Kim's low Reynolds number second moment turbulence closure is adopted. In this model, turbulence model constants in the wall region are modified as functions of turbulent Reynolds number by use of near wall turbulent universal properties based on Laufer's experimental results of Reynolds stress distriburions. Algebraic stress model and Reynolds stress equation model are used to verify the low Reynolds number second moment closure. The application of the present low Reynolds number algebraic stress model to the prediction of a square sectioned 180.deg. bend flow gives improved velocities and Reynolds stresses profiles compared with those obtained by using the van Driest mixing length model and present low Reynolds number Reynolds stress equation model.
The realizability condition has been applied to modern turbulence models, Simulations are performed to compare ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulence models imposing the realizability condition. An improvement to the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is also presented and shown to lead to better agreement with data for supersonic base flows. The improvement is achieved by imposing a grid-independent realizability constraint in the Launder-Sharma ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. Numerical results for several test problems show a critical role of the realizability constraint in the prediction of separated flows.

With the introduction of Fractal notation, various fields of engineering adopted fractal notation to express characteristics of geometry involved and one of the most frequently applied areas was turbulence. With research on turbulence regarding the surface as fractal geometry, attempts to analyze turbulent premised flame as fractal geometry also attracted attention as a tool for modeling, for the flame surface can be viewed as fractal geometry. Experiments focused on disclosure of flame characteristics by measuring fractal parameters were done by researchers. But robust principle or theory can't be extracted. Only reported modeling efforts using fractal dimension is flame speed model by Gouldin. This model gives good predictions of flame speed in unstrained case but not in highly strained flame condition. In this research, approaches regarding fractal dimension of flame as one representative value is pointed out as a reason for the absence of robust model. And as an extort to establish robust modeling, Presents methods treating fractal dimension as statistical variable. From this approach flame characteristics reported by experiments such as Da effect on flame structure can be seen quantitatively and shows possibility of flame modeling using fractal parameters with statistical method. From this result more quantitative model can be derived.

A numerical analysis of unsteady motion in solid rocket motors with a nozzle has been conducted. The numerical formulation including modified $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model treats the complete conservation equation for the gas phase and the one-dimensional equations in the radial direction for the condensed phase. A fully coupled implicit scheme based on a dual time-stepping integration algorithm has been adopted to solve the governing equations. After obtaining a steady state solution, pulse and periodic oscillations of pressure are imposed at the head-end to simulate acoustic oscillations of a travelling-wave motion in the combustion chamber. Various steady and unsteady state features in the combustion chamber of a rocket motor has been analyzed as results of numerical calculations.
The stoichiometric methan/air premixed turbulent flames at the axisymmetric Bunsen burner situation are numerically investigated. To account for the chemistry-turbulence interaction in the turbulent premixed flames, the steady laminar flamelet library method has been adopted. The flame front is tracked by using the Level-Set Approach. Turbulence is represented by the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ modeling with a Pope's correction. The detailed comparison between prediction and measurement has made for the flame field in terms of velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and normarlized temperature.
