  • The industrial revolution in England was based on the manufacturing systems by the power of water mill and rapidly progressed by the innovation of steam engine. It is no exaggeration to say that today's civilization is realized by the development of various types of power machinery, namely fluid machinery and heat engine. The electric energy is converted mainly from thermal energy (mainly steam) of mineral oil, coal and nuclear fuel through generator connected with steam turbine which is a kind of power machinery. There are various types of power machinery as shown in Tables 1a and 1b. They are classified into two types by use. One is absorption type of fluid and/or thermal energy, for examples, windmill and heat engine. The other is provision type of the energies for examples, pump, compressor and propulsion. By flow type, they are also classified by two types, turbo type and positive-displacement type. The turbo type began from water mill and windmill and evolve to steam turbine and finally to gas turbine. The positive-displacement type started from reciprocating water pump and developed into steam engine and changed to reciprocating combustion engine. The pumps and motors used in oil hydraulic system for power control are also positive-displacement type.

  • 최근 가스 터빈 엔진의 설계에 있어서 엔진 운용 및 정비에 소요되는 비용은 중요한 설계변수로 대두되었다. 이에 따라 엔진의 유지 및 보수가 조립상태에서 이루어져야 한다는 개념이 확대되고 있으나, 실제로 이것은 엔진의 상태를 정확히 예측할 수 있을 때에만 가능한 것이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 항공기에 장착/운용 중인 각 성능요소들을 측정하고 분석하여 엔진 성능을 진단하는 가스경로해석과 퍼지로직을 적용한 엔진 성능진단 코드를 개발하였으며, 이를 스마트 무인기용 터보축 엔진에 적용하여 지상 정지 상태에서의 엔진의 단일 성능저하를 정량적으로 예측하였다.

  • Turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine is one of promising technologies in the automotive industry. However, reduction in turbo-lag under transient operation is one of important challenging points to improve drivability. Engine transient performance was investigated in a 4-cylinder 2.0 L turbo-gasoline direct injection (T-GDI) engine using Inconel and TiAl (Titanium Aluminide alloy) turbine wheel turbochargers. The TiAl turbocharger performed superior transient boost pressure and torque rises under various engine transient operation conditions. These were mainly due to lower turbine rotational inertia of TiAl turbocharger. The Maximum boost pressure and torque build up were founded in 1500 rpm and 2000 rpm, instant load change from 20% to 100% of pedal position.

  • 바이패스 덕트 손실을 고려한 비행 중의 복축 혼합형 터보팬 엔진의 윈드밀 성능을 예측하기 위해, 본 연구에서는 원심 및 축류 압축기, 축류 터빈의 윈드밀 작동 과정과 물리적 현상을 규명하고 바이패스 덕트를 통과한 공기와의 혼합 현상을 해석하였다. 윈드밀 성능 예측의 결과는 유차원 해석을 통해 비교 분석하였다.

대형디젤기관의 EGR에 의한 배기가스변화에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Exhaust Gas Change of a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine by EGR)

  • The effects of EGR on emissions were investigated by using a six-cylinder, 8 litre, turbo-charged, heavy-duty diesel engine with a low pressure route EGR system. The experiments were performed at various engine loads while the EGR rates were set from 0% to 30%. Hot and cooled EGR are achieved without cooling and with cooling respectively. To verify the possibility of EGR technology for the applications, test were performed with steady state test cycle. It was found that the exhaust emissions with the EGR system resulted in a very large reduction in oxides of nitrogen at the expense of higher smoke and PM emissions. Increasing the EGR rate leads to deteriorating specific fuel consumption and power at lower speed and higher load. Also, the reduction rates of NOx emissions for hot and cooled EGR are similar.

가스터빈 기화기의 분무 가시화 연구 (Spray Visualization of the Gas Turbine Vaporizer)

  • Spray visualization of a vaporizer fuel injection system of a micro turbo jet engine was experimentally studied. The fuel heating by combustion was simulated by the high pressure steam generator and combustor inlet air from the centrifugal compressor was simulated by compressed air stored in the high pressure air tank. Spray visualization was performed with single vaporizer, and then six vaporizers which are same number of micro turbojet engine were used. As a results, the spray characteristics of the vaporizer were understood with pressure difference of the combustor inlet air and the fuel supply pressure. Spray angles with three types of vaporizer configuration were measured. In the results, guide vane configuration has a wider spray angle than the straight tube and smooth curve tube with a swirler, so it is expected that the fuel will be effectively distributed inside the combustor flame tube.

  • The aim in this study is to develop the combined EGR system with a non-thermal plasma reactor for reducing exhaust emissions and improving fuel economy in turbo intercooler ECU common-rail diesel engines. At the first step, in this paper, the characteristics of performance and $NO_x{\cdot}THC$ emissions under four kinds of engine loads are experimentally investigated by using a four-cycle, four-cylinder, direct injection type, water-cooled turbo intercooler ECU common-rail diesel engine with a combined plasma exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) system operating at three kinds of engine speeds. The EGR system is used to reduce $NO_x$ emissions, and the non-thermal plasma reactor and turbo intercooler system are used to reduce THC emissions. The plasma system is a flat-to-flat type reactor operated by a plasma power supply. The fuel is sprayed by pilot and main injections at the variable injection timing between BTDC $15^{\circ}$ and ATDC $1^{\circ}$ according to experimental conditions. It is found that the specific fuel consumption rate with EGR is increased, but the fuel economy is better than that of mechanical injection type diesel engine as compared with the same output. Results show that $NO_x$ emissions are decreased, but THC emissions are increased, as the EGR rate is elevated. $NO_x$ and THC emissions are also slightly decreased as the applied electrical voltage of the non-thermal plasma reactor is elevated. Thus one can conclude that the influence of EGR in $NO_x$ and THC emissions is larger than that of the non-thermal plasma reactor, but THC emissions are greatly influenced by the non-thermal plasma reactor as the EGR rate is elevated.

유동해석을 통한 터보차저 형상 연구 (A Study on the Configuration of Turbo Charger through Flow Analysis)

  • Recently, the turbo charger has become an important part because it yields little displacement and high power while downsizing the engine's fuel ratio for environmental purposes. In this study, flow analysis was conducted to form the basis of data regarding the best efficiency. The axial displacement was changed from none to 25 mm by controlling the configuration of the turbo charger and the flow analyses were compared with each other. The maximum rate of the outlet of model 1 was 46.36 m/s and the maximum pressure of model 4 was 0.761946 Pa. The maximum flow rate of model 4 was 0.000187650 kg/s. This study's result should aid in the effective design of a turbo charger with high performance.

  • 가스터빈 엔진은 작동시간이 축적됨에 따라 엔진 주요부품의 성능이 점차적으로 저하되며, 내부구성부품 사이에 결함이 발생하기도 한다. 이러한 엔진의 손상여부를 진단하기 위해 가스경로해석(GPA, Gas Path Analysis)이 사용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 상용 프로그램에 의존하지 않고, 각 성능변수들과 측정 변수들과의 열역학적 민감도를 이용하여 엔진성능진단 코드를 개발하였으며, 스마트무인기용 터보축 엔진에 적용하여 엔진의 단일 성능 저하를 예측하여 보았다.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the installed performance of the PW206C turbo shaft engine used in the development of the smart UAV(Unmanned Ariel Vehicle) by KARI(Korean Aerospace Research Institute). It mainly aims to investigate performance behavior at installed conditions using both inlet and exhaust losses generated by CFD analysis of the ducts. The ways employed to be able to analyze the performance extensively were mainly rallied out by performing design point analysis of the engine where the performance simulation results from the commercial program 'GASTURB 9' used for simulation were used as inlet boundary condition for the ducts in CFD program The use of CFD tool involve modeling of the ducts to conform with the stipulated shape and sizes as defined by KARI with a grid density that allows reasonable flow characteristics applicable to aircraft components. Respective values of Shaft horse power obtained by varying flight Mach number, Gas generator RPM and Altitude considering several losses inclusive of those estimated by use of CFD tool were then plotted at three conditions with the ECS-OFF, ECS-MAX and at un-installed condition. Reasonable results were obtained as a result of using computational fluid dynamics that can hence be justified as an alternative tool for use in future flow analysis of engine and components.
