D&B method in tunnel construction requires accurate and rapid measurement of the ground movement, which of essential for feedback analysis. Recently, survey technique adapting IT is getting more and more emphasized in the field of construction and tunnel survey also follow the same trend. Case study and adaptability of IT technique for tunnel survey will be discussed in this study. The application of laserscannig method in the field of tunnel construction was reported in several advanced country including Austria and Japan. Survey for the crown and shoulder movements by IT survey method was conducted and the results were compared to those do the conventional method. The pipe-roof, grouting, ring-cut are installed in the this site to prevent expected large ground settlement. The result show that laserscanner system is prefered rather than conventional method in that better understanding for the displacement condition and origin condition was liable by the lasersacnnig method. IT survey solution makes if possible to execute more economic and safe construction.

Tunnel Mapper, which is tunnel face survey system was used to conduct Face Mapping on the face of the tunnel that is under construction. Then, accuracy and utility value on the forecast of discontinuity were verified to verify the field application in order to present the measures for the use of the system for conducting research on the discontinuity. As result of the directivity verification following discontinuity‘s project, forecasted measurement and actually researched measurement error for the Dip direction and Dip angle was less than ${\pm}10$. Accuracy was 82.6% for Dip direction and 90.7% for Dip angle, which are high. Accordingly, face research discontinuity forecasting system's reliability level towards directivity is high. Tunnel Mapper, a tunnel face survey system can be leveraged to replace face's visual survey and to obtain objective information, enabling execution of the survey system that can automate face survey going beyond time and space related limitations.
A TSP(Tunnel Seismic Prediction) survey which is modified VSP(Vertical Seismic Profiling) survey applied in tunnel was carried out at Pyongtaek and Incheon liquefied petroleum gas(LPG) storage cavern during excavation. The TSP survey in Pyongtaek LPG storage cavern which is located below Namyangho was performed to confirm the location and orientation of the fault detected at pre-investigation stage. The TSP survey was carried out in access tunnel, construction tunnel, and watercurtain tunnel to characterize 3 dimensional figure of the fault. The results of TSP survey are compared four in vestigation boreholes drilled in shelter of access tunnel. The fault was also detected by borehole survey and the location was coincided with the result of TSP survey. Depending on the result of TSP survey and core logging, the design such as cavern layout and length was changed. Another TSP survey was performed in Incheon LPG storage cavern which is located below sea. Because of poor geological information at pre-investigation stage and suffering from heavy leakage of groundwater, the TSP survey to detect fracture zone was carried out. The support and grouting design was reflected by the result of TSP survey.

Unexpected anomalies in the geotechnical investigation at design stage may cause problems during tunnel excavation. Therefore, it is important to predict the ground condition ahead of a tunnel face during tunnel excavation in order to prevent tunnel collapse. Despite the fulfillment of an electrical resistivity survey at the tunnel face, the existing electrical resistivity survey program can produce distorted results by the limitation of tunnel modelling. In this background, this study develops a modelling program for an electrical resistivity survey considering the tunnel shape. Numerical simulation and inverse calculation were performed for the electrical resistivity survey in the tunnel using the developed program. As a result, it was proved that the developed program could predict accurately the anomalous object's location and condition ahead of the tunnel face.

The existing tunnel survey method contains many problems of taking much measuring time, increasing construction expenses, and delaying a term of construction. Therefore the site survey system for an improvement efficiency is developed. This system will be able to solve the ewer factor and the problem of curtailment of time and expenditure. In order to solve these problems it connected a measurement equipment and a notebook computer, and developed the system which simultaneously with tunnel measurement it will be able to decide locations and errors from site at real-time. The development or the tunnel survey system minimize the error occurrence as measuring tunnel, and the probability of more or less excavation. Therefore this site survey system leads to the effect of the improvement execution quality of work, the cost reduction and the construction term reduction.
To predict ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face, seismic refraction survey has been widely used. But due to the development in seismic equipment and techniques, tomography using borehole and others are actively applied in recent years. This study has a purpose to prevent stability problems during excavation and construction of tunnels by predicting unfavorable ground conditions such as fault, fractured zone and rock quality variation zone ahead of the tunnel face using TSP survey equipment. In this study, the validity of predicting ground conditions ahead of tunnel face by TSP survey has been evaluated through the case study in the road construction site.

Continuous seismic refraction, reflection and echo-sounder surveys conducted at Koyna Project site provided geotechnical information which helped in choosing the alignment for Head race tunnel and in designing and choosing the site for Lake Tap. Seismic refraction survey both on land and in shallow water determined depths to bedrock and helped in inferring the bedrock quality. Seismic reflection survey mapped the subsurface stratigraphy with high resolution. Reservoir-bed and bedrock contours drawn from the results of the survey helped in choosing the tunnel alignment and the lake tap position cost effectively. It was inferred from the results of the survey that the geology and the quality of rock do not change unexpectedly around the site for extension of Head race tunnel and the lake tapping. The bedrock levels evaluated by seismic survey agreed remarkably well with those inferred in boreholes having Rock Quality Designation 90 percent or more.
Anomalies and/or fractured grounds not detected by the surface geophysical and geological survey performed during design stage may cause significant problems during tunnel excavation. Many studies on prediction methods of the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face have been conducted and applied in tunneling construction sites, such as tunnel seismic profiling and probe drilling. However, most such applications have focused on the drill and blast tunneling method. Few studies have been conducted for mechanized tunneling because of the limitation in the available space to perform prediction tests. This study aims to predict the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face in TBM tunneling by using an electrical resistivity tomography survey. It compared the characteristics of each electrode array and performed an investigation on in-situ tunnel boring machine TBM construction site environments. Numerical simulations for each electrode array were performed, to determine the proper electrode array to predict anomalies ahead of the tunnel face. The results showed that the modified dipole-dipole array is, compared to other arrays, the best for predicting the location and condition of an anomaly. As the borehole becomes longer, the measured data increase accordingly. Therefore, longer boreholes allow a more accurate prediction of the location and status of anomalies and complex grounds.
Geological events which are undetected by the surface geophysical or geological survey phase can cause many problems, especially when the tunnel is excavated by TBM. To detect the geological events ahead of tunnel face, a seismic method applied from VSP method is used. Generally uniaxial geophone has been used in surface seismic survey. But this time, triaxial geophone is used to reduce the noise of tunnel wave. DME(Dip moveout Enhancement) filter and diffraction stack method are used. Applying these techniques to the road tunnel in construction, it is proved that the geological events ahead of tunnel face is fairly well predicted. From the seismic trace, Vp and Vs which are related to the rock property can be also obtained. Rock property and proper support design can be dedced from these parameters.
This paper shows that crosshole seismic survey allows to detect even a small size of underground tunnel (about 2m$\times$2m). Such a small tunnel (e.g. infiltration tunnel) causes diffraction, as the seismic wave propagates, which results in distinctive variations of traveltime and amplitude of the first arrivals. This effect (or tunnel effect) is a typical indicator for the existence of tunnel and thereby an information about the tunnel location can be obtained. It was shown that the tunnel effect illustrated by numerical modeling (FDM) could be also observed in field measurements. The depth and shape of the tunnel were determined by a simplified processing method based on the use of amplitude variation of the first arrivals. The estimated location of the tunnel was well matched to that of the real tunnel.
