A Study on Smoke Movement Characteristics for Water spray system Installation in Tunnel (터널내 수분무 시설 설치시 연기유동 특성 연구)

  • In this study, we conducted an FDS simulation for the purpose of carrying out a basic assessment of the usefulness of the water spray for fire extinguishing. We analyzed the effect of securing the stability in temperature and smoke density in case of fire according to fire intensities and changes in wind speed. When there was no wind speed in tunnels, it was effective in securing the safety of people because the cooling effect of the water spray system had an excellent effect on reducing temperatures and smoke densities there.

  • 도로터널은 반지하 공간으로서 환기에 많은 설비와 구조에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있으며 특히 제트팬의 경우 평상시에는 환기를 담당하고 있다. 또한 화재시에는 화재연기의 유독가스를 효과적으로 차단하는 제연역할을 함으로서 피난에 대한 중요한 역할을 담당한다. 이러한 제트팬의 특성을 정량적으로 유추하고 공학적인 QRA의 수행을 위한 기초적 연구로서 터널내부의 제트팬의 환기특성을 알아보기 위하여 모형실험체의 내부측정을 2/3까지한 전보에 이어 이번 연구에서는 터널내부전체를 측정하여 제트팬이 모형터널내에 미치는 영향을 CFD와 비교한 연구이다.

Response Time Index and Operation Time of Fixed Temperature Heat Detector (정온식 열감지기의 응답시간지수 및 작동시간)

  • Fixed temperature heat detectors that respond to the heat generated in fire plume and alarm when the temperature reaches a specified point, give a great influences to the loss of life and property according to their reaction sensitivity. In this study, hot wind tunnel tests and compartment fire experiments were performed to investigate the response time and temperature of fixed temperature heat detector. As a result, simple equations were derived which can be predicted the response time and temperature of the fixed temperature heat detector for the ramp type fire. Also other useful data, such as the effective temperature, time constant, response time index(RTI) were obtained.

  • In the tunnel of domestic high - speed railway, the main fire - fighting facility, fire - extinguishing passageway, is installed. However, due to the high pressure of the high - speed train, frequent breakage and maintenance are caused by strong shock and long - term vibration. In order to solve these problems, it is necessary to improve the fire door, but in Korea, it is installed by submitting a certificate by simple KS F 2296 performance test. At present, it is developed as a simple test certification by producing a real scale fireproof door without the theoretical examination in advance, so that a high cost for improvement is occurring in Korea. Therefore, through this study, structural analysis study which can preliminary structure review was carried out in order to design the refuge connection passage fire door and to improve the performance improvement. In order to secure the reliability of the result value, the official authentication test (KS F 2296) were compared.

A Numerical Analysis of the Distribution of Temperature and Combustio Products I case of Compartment Fire (폐쇄공간 화재 발생시 온도 및 연소산화물의 분포에 관한 모델 해석)

  • The first purpose of this study is to verify the application of computer modelling to a enclosed space fire. The second one is to determine temperature distribution for the three different ventilation types in case of a enclosed space fire. The third one is to find out the ventilation direction and ventilation quantity to remove effectively heat and combustion products generated by a fire in variable air volume(VAV) system. Firstly, compared with experimental results of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(LLNL), numerical results show good agreements. Secondly, among three different ventilation types, the numerical analyses show the highest temperature distribution in occupied zone(up to 1.8 m from bottom) from firing moment to 100 sec. when supply ducts are placed in ceiling and extract duct is placed close to the bottom on side walls. This is due to disadvantageous position of extract duct in ventilating high temperature air which rise because of buoyancy force. Thirdly, this study finds out effective ventilation direction and ventilation quantity to remove heat and combustion products generated by a fire by using VAV system. $CO_2$ concentration is used as a fire fume removal index. As soon as a fire happens, ventilation direction is changed in order to gather and drive out fire fumes. In case of three times ventilation quantity of ordinary one, $CO_2$ concentration and temperature have begun to decrease at 120 sec. after firing, i.e.fire fumes have begun to be removed.

Experimental study on the effect of exhaust ventilation by shafts for case of fire in long traffic tunnels (장대 교통터널 화재시 수직갱의 배연효과에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the smoke movement and to investigate the effect of exhaust ventilation using by shafts for case of fire in long tunnels. Based on Froude modeling, the 1/50 scaled model tunnel (20 m long) was constructed by acrylic tubes and test were carried out systematically. The results of the shaft height test show that the effect on exhaust ventilation by a shaft delays the propagation time of backlayering, and the temperature decreases as the shaft height increases. If the fire occurs downstream of the shaft, the backlayering develops to get stronger by the shaft exhaust effect and then the propagation of CO and temperature increase along with propagation of CO. That is to say, in the case of fire downstream of the shaft, the shaft has the advantage of smoke exhaust effects, but it might result in a dangerous situation for the escaping passengers due to the more developed backlayering.

  • The Korea Foldable safe pathway system is an evacuation support system to get temporary evacuation route in railway tunnel and large space fires. A prevention smoke screen is unfolded in fires and it is needed to prevent heat and smoke from fire source. Therefore, ventilation system for positive pressure condition is equipped with foldable safe pathway system. Numerical analyses of temperature and pressure distribution with distance from fire source were performed considering fire scenario of new train vehicle. The smoke temperatures did not exceed $200^{\circ}C$ that distance from the fire source was more than 20 m and smoke pressure was reduced with distance from fire source. Maximum smoke pressure was 14 Pa and average pressure was 6 Pa in position of prevention smoke screen. As results, to install foldable safe pathway system, ventilation system is need to maintain 6 Pa positive pressure condition.

An Experimental Study of Smoke Movement in Tunnel Fires with Natural Ventilation (터널 화재시 자연 배기에 의한 연기 거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, reduced-scale experiments were conducted to understand smoke movements in tunnel fires with the natural ventilation. The 1/20 scale experiments were conducted under the Froude scaling since the smoke movement in tunnels is governed by buoyancy force. Three cases of experiments, in which a natural vent location varied from 1 m, 2 m and 3 m from the fire source symmetrically, were conducted in order to evaluate the effect of the position of ventilation systems on smoke movement. In case of a poo1 whose diameter is 4.36 cm, the temperature of smoke layer passed through the vent was maintained 7~$8^{\circ}c$ less than that of smoke layer without a vent. In case of a pool whose diameter is 5.23 cm, the average velocity passed through the vent was decreased when it was close to the fire source. And the maximum delay time was 3.86s. In CASE 1, the ceiling temperature was decreased by approximately 8$^{\circ}C$ and the vertical temperature was decreased by approximately $7^{\circ}c$. In CASE 2, both ceiling and vertical temperature wert decreased by $3^{\circ}c$ and in CASE 3, they were decreased by $2^{\circ}c$ each. It was confirmed that the thickness of smoke layer was maintained uniformly under the 25% height of tunnel through the visualized smoke flow by a laser sheet and the digital camcoder.

  • To predict and analyze the rolling stock's fire growth is considered not only important factor in estimating hazard analysis of rolling stock, but also a primary factor in aspect of a rail load facility. Because it's could be regarded as a ignition source in risk assesment for the facility i.e. tunnel and station. However, currently, standardized method to predict and analyze the fire growth has not been completed yet. it is due to the fact that fire growth is not only depended on thermal property of interior materials, but also is affected dominantly by various factors such as ignition source (characterized by location, duration, and intensity), train running condition and in/exterior ventilation condition. Especially, ventilation condition is one of the most effective factor to affect fire growth in compartment space as noticed by under-ventilation fire condition. In this study, the effect of each ventilation condition on fire growth and load were examined through the numerical method through FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator).
