  • In this study, seismic analysis is performed using simplified method, analytical solution and numerical analysis based on one-dimensional seismic site response analysis. The results show that analytical solution of tunnel response is predicted more conservative than numerical solution. And simplified method is not appropriate for seismic analysis of tunnel response. In addition, it is reasonable to determine shear-modulus reduction ratio performing seismic site response analysis to consider ground nonlinear-behavior.

  • In the design of cut and cover tunnels, the structural analysis has been used for its simplicity. Contrarily to the geotechnical analysis, this technique could not account for the geological and geometric factors. In this study, the dominant factors influencing the behavior of cut and cover tunnel such as interface element, cut slope, distance between cut slope and tunnel lining, berm, coefficient of lateral earth pressure, were investigated and compared by geotechnical numerical analysis. Based on the results, the variations of earth pressure, bending moment, shear stress, axial load, and displacements were evaluated and analyzed for each factor.

  • Behavior of the existing tunnel in the jointed rocks was affected by the adjacent slope excavation. In this study, large scale model tests were conducted. To investigate the tunnel distortion depending on the excavated slope angle and the joint dip of the ground performed model tests were numerically back analyzed. Consequently, as the joint dip and slope angle became larger, the tunnel distortion was tended to be larger. Ground displacement was also greatly dependent on the joint dip and the excavated slope angle, which indicated the possibility of the optimal slope reinforcement.

  • The axial stress in rock bolt, the shear stress at the bolt-grout interface and the neutral point are analyzed to understand the mechanical behavior of rook bolt. To analyze the support effects of rock bolt in various geological conditions, numerical analyses are performed with regard to bolt spacing and bolt length in several geological conditions and tunnel sizes. Through the numerical analyses, the distributions of maximum tensile stress and shear stress are determined. And the excavation width of underground opening affects the position of the neutral point. In the circular opening supported by pattern bolting, the increase of confining pressure, the reduction of plastic zone, and that of ground displacement are determined by using the radial stress increase ratio, the plastic zone reduction ratio and the displacement reduction ratio respectively. The results of this study can be applied to a practical tunnel design through understanding of the trends of these support effects.

  • Focusing on the bench length, this paper presents the results of 3-dimensional elafto-plastic FE Analysis un tunnels of full face, mini-bench and short bench excavated in weathered rock. Influences of unsupported span, horizontal to vertical stress ratio, thickness of shotcrete on the behavior of rock and support were a1so studied. Results showed that displacements of mini-bench tunnels responded more sensitively to bench lengths than those of short bench. The effects of bench excavation on upper half displacement increased with longer unsupported span. Horizontal to vertical stress ratio showed a greater influence on displacement and preceding displacement ratio or sidewall rather than those of crown and invert.

  • The geological conditions surrounding the Jijiapo Tunnel of the Three Gorges Fanba Highway project in Hubei Province are very complex. In this paper, a 3-D physical model was carried out to study the evolution process of filling-type fracture water inrush and mud gush based on the conditions of the section located between 16.040 km and 16.042 km of the Jijiapo Tunnel. The 3-D physical model was conducted to clarify the effect of the self-weight of the groundwater level and tunnel excavation during water inrush and mud gush. The results of the displacement, stress and seepage pressure of fracture and surrounding rock in the physical model were analyzed. In the physical model the results of the model test show that the rock displacement suddenly jumped after sustainable growth, rock stress and rock seepage suddenly decreased after continuous growth before water inrushing. Once water inrush occured, internal displacement of filler increased successively from bottom up, stress and seepage pressure of filler droped successively from bottom up, which presented as water inrush and mud gush of filling-type fracture was a evolving process from bottom up. The numerical study was compared with the model test to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the results of the model test.

  • Finite element or difference methods are applied to the analysis of the tunnel stability and they provide detailed behaviour of analyzed tunnel sections but it is rather inefficient to analyze all the section of tunnel by using these methods. In this study, the authors suggest a new stability analysis method for whole tunnel to provide an efficient and easy way to understand the behaviour of whole tunnel by using an analytical solution with the assumption of equivalent circular tunnel. The mechanical behaviour, radial strain and plastic zone radius of whole tunnel were analyzed and appropriate support pressure to maintain the displacement within the allowable limit was suggested after the application of this method to the tunnel. Consequently, it was confirmed that this method can provide quick analysis of the whole tunnel stability and the quantitative information for subsequent measures such as selection of tunnel sections for detailed numerical analysis, set up of the monitoring plan, and so on.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on the closure ratio of tunnel face to reduce pressure and displacement occurring at tunnel face during tunnel excavation. In experimental study, model tests are carried out according to the closure ratio of tunnel face and tunnel depth. Model test results are analyzed and interpreted by numerical calculation in order to verify results obtained from experimental and numerical studies. It is clearly found that tunnel face stability increases with the increase of the closure ratio of tunnel face. The results also show that tunnel face is stable when the closure ratio of tunnel face is larger than 80%. This research will be very useful to develop the economical tunnel face closing system.

  • The precise prediction of ground displacement plays an important role in planning and constructing tunnels. In this study, an equation for predicting the surface and crown settlement is suggested by examining the theories of ground movement caused by tunnel excavation. From the 3D numerical modeling, the reinforcement effect of UAM (Umbrella Arch Method) is quantitatively analyzed with respect to deformation modulus and overburden. By using a regression technique for the numerical results, an equation for predicting the settlement is suggested.
