  • Splitting tensile strength (STS) is an important mechanical parameter of concrete. This study offers novel methodologies for the early prediction of this parameter. Artificial neural network (ANN), which is a leading predictive method, is synthesized with two metaheuristic algorithms, namely atom search optimization (ASO) and equilibrium optimizer (EO) to achieve an optimal tuning of the weights and biases. The models are applied to data collected from the published literature. The sensitivity of the ASO and EO to the population size is first investigated, and then, proper configurations of the ASO-NN and EO-NN are compared to the conventional ANN. Evaluating the prediction results revealed the excellent efficiency of EO in optimizing the ANN. Accuracy improvements attained by this algorithm were 13.26 and 11.41% in terms of root mean square error and mean absolute error, respectively. Moreover, it raised the correlation from 0.89958 to 0.92722. This is while the results of the conventional ANN were slightly better than ASO-NN. The EO was also a faster optimizer than ASO. Based on these findings, the combination of the ANN and EO can be an efficient non-destructive tool for predicting the STS.

  • The design of safe and economical structures depends on the reliable live load from load survey. Live load surveys are traditionally conducted by randomly selecting rooms and weighing each item on-site, a method that has problems of low efficiency, high cost, and long cycle time. This paper proposes a deep learning-based method combined with Internet big data to perform live load surveys. The proposed survey method utilizes multi-source heterogeneous data, such as images, voice, and product identification, to obtain the live load without weighing each item through object detection, web crawler, and speech recognition. The indoor objects and face detection models are first developed based on fine-tuning the YOLOv3 algorithm to detect target objects and obtain the number of people in a room, respectively. Each detection model is evaluated using the independent testing set. Then web crawler frameworks with keyword and image retrieval are established to extract the weight information of detected objects from Internet big data. The live load in a room is derived by combining the weight and number of items and people. To verify the feasibility of the proposed survey method, a live load survey is carried out for a meeting room. The results show that, compared with the traditional method of sampling and weighing, the proposed method could perform efficient and convenient live load surveys and represents a new load research paradigm.

  • The bandgap characteristics of semiconductor materials are an important factor when utilizing semiconductor materials for various applications. In this study, based on data provided by AFLOW (Automatic-FLOW for Materials Discovery), the bandgap of a semiconductor material was predicted using only the material's compositional features. The compositional features were generated using the python module of 'Pymatgen' and 'Matminer'. Pearson's correlation coefficients (PCC) between the compositional features were calculated and those with a correlation coefficient value larger than 0.95 were removed in order to avoid overfitting. The bandgap prediction performance was compared using the metrics of R2 score and root-mean-squared error. By predicting the bandgap with randomforest and xgboost as representatives of the ensemble algorithm, it was found that xgboost gave better results after cross-validation and hyper-parameter tuning. To investigate the effect of compositional feature selection on the bandgap prediction of the machine learning model, the prediction performance was studied according to the number of features based on feature importance methods. It was found that there were no significant changes in prediction performance beyond the appropriate feature. Furthermore, artificial neural networks were employed to compare the prediction performance by adjusting the number of features guided by the PCC values, resulting in the best R2 score of 0.811. By comparing and analyzing the bandgap distribution and prediction performance according to the material group containing specific elements (F, N, Yb, Eu, Zn, B, Si, Ge, Fe Al), various information for material design was obtained.

  • Ever since media contents took over the world, the importance of typography has increased, and the influence of fonts has be n recognized. Nevertheless, the current Hangul font system is very poor and is provided passively, so it is practically impossible to understand and utilize all the shape characteristics of more than six thousand Hangul fonts. In this paper, the characteristics of Hangul font shapes were selected based on the Hangul structure of similar fonts. The stroke element detection training was performed by fine tuning Faster R-CNN Inception v2, one of the deep learning object detection models. We also propose a system that automatically extracts the stroke element characteristics from characters by introducing an automatic extraction algorithm. In comparison to the previous research which showed poor accuracy while using SVM(Support Vector Machine) and Sliding Window Algorithm, the proposed system in this paper has shown the result of 10 % accuracy to properly detect and extract stroke elements from various fonts. In conclusion, if the stroke element characteristics based on the Hangul structural information extracted through the system are used for similar classification, problems such as copyright will be solved in an era when typography's competitiveness becomes stronger, and an automated process will be provided to users for more convenience.

  • A cascade structured neural network called Sigma-Pi$_{t}$ Cascaded Hybrid Neural Network ($\sigma$$\pi$$_{t}$-CHNN) is Proposed. It is an extended version of the Sigma-Pi Cascaded extended Hybrid Neural Network ($\sigma$$\pi$-CHNN), where the classical multiplicative neuron ($\pi$-neuron) is replaced by the translated multiplicative ($\pi$$_{t}$-neuron) model. The learning algorithm of $\sigma$$\pi$$_{t}$-CHNN is composed of an evolutionary programming method, responsible for determining the network architecture, and of a Levenberg-Marquadt algorithm, responsible for tuning the weights of the network. The $\sigma$$\pi$$_{t}$-CHNN is evaluated in 2 pattern classification problems: the 2 spirals and the sonar problems. In the 2 spirals problem, $\sigma$$\pi$$_{t}$-CHNN can generate neural networks with 10% less hidden neurons than that in previous neural models. In the sonar problem, $\sigma$$\pi$$_{t}$-CHNN can find the optimal solution for the problem i.e., a network with no hidden neurons. These results confirm the expanded information processing capabilities of $\sigma$$\pi$$_{t}$-CHNN, when compared to previous neural network models. network models.

  • A identification algorithm that finds optimal fuzzy membership functions and rule base to fuzzy model isproposed and a fuzzy controller is designed to get more accurate position and velocity control of wheeled mobile robot. This procedure that is composed of three steps has its own unique process at each step. The elements of output term set are increased at first step and then the rule base is varied according to increase of the elements. The adjusted system is in competition with system which doesn't include any increased elements. The adjusted system will be removed if the system lost. Otherwise, the control system is replaced with the adjusted system. After finished regulation of output term set and rule base, searching for input membership functions is processed with constraints and fine tuning of output membership functions is done.

  • This paper is concerned with the fuzzy control scheme and PID controller for the vibration suppression control of a cantilever beam equipped with a laser sensor and an electromagnetic actuator. The PID controller is being widely used in industrial applications. However, it is difficult to determine the appropriate PID gains in nonlinear systems and systems with time variant characteristic and so on. In this paper, we design the fuzzy based PID controller of which output gains are adjusted automatically and the designed controller is applied to active vibration control of a cantilever beam using electromagnetic actuator with strong nonlinearity. The tuning PID parameters of proposed controller are determined by using Fuzzy algorithm. Effectiveness and performance of the designed controller are verified by both simulation and experiment results. Experimental results demonstrate that better control performance can be achieved in comparison with the PID cotroller.

  • Support vector machines have been extensively studied and utilized in pattern recognition area for years. One of interesting applications of this technique is music/speech classification for a standardized codec such as 3GPP2 selectable mode vocoder. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that improves the speech/music classification of support vector machines. While conventional support vector machine optimization techniques apply during training phase, the proposed technique can be adopted in classification phase. In this regard, the proposed approach can be developed and employed in parallel with conventional optimizations, resulting in synergistic boost in classification performance. We first analyze the impact of kernel width parameter on the classifications made by support vector machines. From this analysis, we observe that we can fine-tune outputs of support vector machines with the kernel width parameter. To make the most of this capability, we identify strong correlation among neighboring input frames, and use this correlation information as a guide to adjusting kernel width parameter. According to the experimental results, the proposed algorithm is found to have potential for improving the performance of support vector machines.

  • Wireless mobile networks tend to drop a large portion of packets due to propagation errors rather than congestion. To Improve reliability over noisy wireless channels, wireless networks can employ forward error correction (FEC) techniques. Static FEC algorithms, however, can degrade the performance by poorly matching their overhead to the degree of the underlying channel error, especially when the channel path loss rate fluctuates widely. This paper investigates the benefits of an adaptable FEC mechanism for wireless networks with severe packet loss by analytical analysis or measurements over a real wireless network called sensor network. We show that our adaptive FEC named FECA (FEC-level Adaptation) technique improves the performance by dynamically tuning FEC strength to the current amount of wireless channel loss. We quantify these benefits through a hybrid simulation integrating packet-level simulation with bit-level details and validate that FECA keeps selecting the appropriate FEC-level for a constantly changing wireless channel.
