  • Recently, concern about family safety is rising again as an important issue with the context of family healthiness and well-being in Korean society despite of the dramatic economic growth. The purpose of this study is to examine the status of family safety of singles and single-parent households and to investigate the effect of social capital on the level of their family safety. Data are from the 10th wave of Korea Welfare Panel Study analysing one-person households(N=2,017) and single-parent households(N=172). One-person households were categorized as three groups by age(the youths/middle-aged/the elderly) and single-parent households were also three by family types(mother-child/fahter-child/grandparent-child). The major results were as follows: First, the mean of family safety index was highest among middle-aged, while single youths had the fewest problems in terms of family safety. Second, social capital was found to vary by family structure. In the one-person households, all the levels of the social capital variables, including trust, bond, acceptance, and participation, differed significantly; only two variables, bond and embracement, differed in the single-parent households. Third, social capital differed between the low-income households and others significantly. Forth, the positive effects of social capital on overcoming family safety problems were investigated. In conclusion, social capital represents an alternative resource for overcoming economic hardship for low-income one-person/single-parent households, especially for middle-aged singles and father-child single-parent households. Based on these empirical results, theoretical implications were discussed with regard to family policy and programs.

  • This study intends to verify whether stock repurchase, as well as stock dispositions, affects shareholder's wealth and also whether repurchase/dispositions has varying impact de-pending on its purpose. According to empirical analysis, announcement of stock repurchase results in positive abnormal returns when the objective of stock repurchase is stock price stabilization or cancellation of shares. However, when the purpose of stock repurchase is granting incentives to executives/employees, we get the negative abnormal returns. Also, the termination of stock trust for reason of expiration or stock dispositions of which goal is to give incentives to executive/employees has a negative impact on stock price, whereas direct dispositions of stock to raise cash or to improve financial structrue are shown to significantly increase the wealth of shareholders. Cross-section analysis also confirms that stock repurchase and dispositions has different impact on excess returns depending on its purpose. The results of this study imply that the dispositions of stock should be regarded as an important financial strategic tool to be used by companies and what's more, such studies dealing with stock repurchase or dispositions should take firm's purpose into consideration in their approach.

  • This study aims to examine how the relationship with an information source affects people to perceive credibility of online information. We developed a conceptual framework that explained how people perceived information credibility when they were familiar with the information source and/or when the information source seemed credible. We then compared the models in two different contexts, namely, online review and social media sites, to examine differences. We surveyed 136 online social media users with their online shopping experiences. Among our eight hypotheses, three (H6: the personality similarity between an information provider and an information seeker enhances the perceived credibility of the former; H7: the credibility of an information provider produces a much stronger mediating effect in review sites than in social media sites; H8: the familiarity of an information seeker with an information provider produces a stronger mediating effect in social media sites than in review sites) are fully supported and four (H1: the credibility of an information provider has a positive influence on the perceived credibility of the online information; H2: the familiarity of an information seeker with an information provider has a positive influence on the perceived credibility of the online information; H3: the goal similarity between an information provider and an information seeker enhances the perceived familiarity of the latter with the former; H5: the personality similarity between an information provider and an information seeker enhances the perceived familiarity of the latter with the former) are partially supported. The hypothesis of H4: the goal similarity between an information provider and an information seeker enhances the perceived credibility of the former is rejected. The result confirms that credibility of information is strongly mediated by credibility of information source than familiarity with information source in online review sites and vice versa in social media sites.

  • Background: Since the Republic of Korea became a labor-force-importing country, the number of foreign workers has increased gradually, especially in the construction industry. The main objective of this study was to examine the differences in safety perception between domestic and foreign workers at Korean construction sites. Methods: A total of 891 Korean and foreign workers were surveyed: 140 foreign and 751 Korean workers. The general characteristics and 25 factors influencing safety perception were considered in the questionnaire. Regression and correlation analyses were conducted to examine the variables of workers' safety perception. Results: Differences of nationality (F = 7.379, p < 0.001) and workplace accidents were statistically significant for both domestic (F = 1.503, p < 0.05) and foreign workers (F = 7.868, p < 0.05). In contrast, age, education, and Korean language level were significant variables only for foreign workers. Correlation coefficients of $0.428^{**}$ for Korean and 0.148 for foreign workers between two items - namely, "management's commitment to safety" and "blaming staff when they make mistakes" - support the conclusion that foreign workers do not trust management's commitment to safety, while Korean workers have confidence in these commitments. Conclusion: Foreign workers' level of safety perception should rise to the same level as Korean workers, especially in terms of obeying safety rules, safety education performance, and safety beliefs. Therefore, an improvement plan for the Korean construction industry is suggested in order to have a better safety level at construction sites with foreign workers.

  • In the information age, cheap price of information processing and advances in personalization technology have allowed companies to enhance the relationships with their existing customers and to expand their customer base by effectively attracting new customers. However, most customers are reluctant to provide their personal information to companies. This study explores the tension between companies' desire to collect personal information to offer personalized services and their customers' privacy concerns. The psychological reactance theory suggests that when individuals feel that their behavioral choice is threatened or restricted, they are motivated to restore their freedom. Therefore, despite the expected benefits from personalized services, customers may perceive the services to be restrictive of their freedom to choose. This adverse effect may undermine the relationships between companies and their customers. We conducted experiments to explore the dynamic roles of transactional and environmental factors in motivating customers to provide personal information. We revisited online privacy issues from the perspective of psychological reactance. For the experiments, we created an online shop and randomly assigned the participants to one of the two experimental conditions-high and low levels of information requirements. The results of the experiment indicate that threatening the free choice serves as a transactional cost in online profiling. On the other hand, the expected benefits of personalization services have positive correlations with customers' willingness to provide personal information. This study explains privacy based on transactional and environmental factors. Our findings also indicate that the environmental factors such as the Internet privacy risk and trust propensity do not significantly affect the willingness to provide personal information when firms required much personal information. Implications and contributions are discussed.

The survey was conducted from July 1 through 20, 2003. Frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, t-test, ANOVA and regression analysis were performed for data handling. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, concerning salaries, their turnover intention was influenced by whether they were properly paid or gained a sufficient living. Second, as for environmental factors, their turnover intention was affected by performance appraisal and interpersonal trust with colleagues. Third, regarding job-related factors, their turnover intention was impacted by the clarity of their job definition, their degree of job satisfaction and the suitability of their posts. Fourth, the change of job was influenced by the desire for a job in another region, in another company and of another kind. To successfully manage employee turnover at hotel bakeries, employees should be properly paid, and different performance appraisal standards, including a multilateral evaluation system, should be applied according to the nature of the department. furthermore, there should be a clear distinction between sales and other works, and they should be carefully treated to increase job satisfaction.
