A Cost-Benefit Analysis for the Establishment of the Truck Transportation Information Networking System in Busan Region : Using the Scenario Analysis (부산지역 화물자동차 운송정보망 구축과 경제적 타당성 분석 -시나리오분석을 중심으로-)

  • Domestic trucking transportation market does not have only the poor business environment but also the serious defects on the transportation trading structure. It makes weaken the competitiveness of trucking industry and hinders the development of trucking industry. The problems of trucking industry such as the recession of the Korean economy and decrease of the trucking charge cause the truck drivers suffer. Korean government and national assembly try to change the law of truck transportation business. The suggested law includes the obligation of trucking information networking system and it can make the transportation business structures more efficiently. This article deals with the strategies for the establishment of trucking transportation networking system and examines the cost-benefit analysis assuming the four demand senario. The results suggest the establishment of the information system not based on the individual trucking industry but on the joint industry at the level of the local area. This article also suggests that the information system has a positive financial feasibility.

  • As a way to allocate lots of orders to many participants for vehicle allocation problem, this study has used an agent negotiation based reverse auction model. This agent negotiation provides coordination functions allowing all participants to make a profit, and accomplishing Pareto optimum solution from the viewpoint of a whole trucking cargo transportation network. In order to build a strategic cooperation relationship based on information sharing, this agent negotiation provides a coordination mechanism in which all the participants including consignors, brokerage firms, and car owners are able to attain their own profits, and also that ensure a competitive market. This study has tried to prove that the result of an agent-based negotiation is the Pareto optimal solution under the present market environment. We established a mathematical formulation for a comparison with the Integer Programming model, and analysing e-Marketplace, structure of shipping expenses and brokerage system in the trucking cargo transportation industry.

  • To revitalize the trucking market, many studies are being done but it still has a lot of problems such as imbalance between supply and demand, poor profit structure of truck owners, ect. Therefore, it aims to study what kinds of prerequisite are needed to solve these problems through analyzing system structure and mechanism of the market. To achieve it, System Dynamics methodology, appropriate to make a simulation model and analyze dynamics of the system, is utilized. To obtain an empirical research point of view, time series data related on trucking market-provided by The Korea Transport Institute-are used. In addition, interview with a local representative logistics company and a ICD(Inland Container Depot) operation company is performed to find out technical and functional supporting factors to solve the existing problems in the market.

Relative Efficiency of Korea Trucking Transport Business Using DEA Model (DEA를 이용한 국내 화물자동차 운송업의 상대적 효율성분석)

  • Korea Trucking Transport Business is one of principal national logistics sector, though, so many issues and problems came to arises, which brought cargo transport system crisis over the country such as logistics enormous jam and traffic. This paper analyzes the efficiency of korean trucking transport business firms using DEA model. We evaluate the CCR, BCC efficiency and RTS of 30 trucking transport firms. We also suggest the trucking transport firms which can be benchmarked based on analyzed information. The result shows that seven enterprises whose values of CCR efficiency are 1, and fifteen enterprises whose values of BCC efficiency are 1. RTS indicates IRS of 16 firms, DRS of 5 firms and CRS of 9 firms.

Efficiency Analysis for Korean Trucking Companies based on the Data Envelopment Ananlysis(DEA) (DEA 모형을 이용한 국내 화물자동차운송업체의 상대적 효율성 분석)

  • Logistic system and methods of the transportation have been changed rapidly by the variety of the logistics environment. It is necessary to analyze the efficiency of Korean trucking companies for enhancing the competitive power and operating. This paper will describe the analysis of the efficiency of the trucking companies with DEA models. By the CCR and the BCC models, which are in parts of DEA model, the efficiency and RTS(Return To Scale) of forty two selected trucking companies were studied. It was also analyzed how the study the input-output variables were effected. And then, some of the forty two trucking companies were shown as the benchmark. As the result of analysis on the two models, seven companies won the score '1' on CCR model and seventeen companies on BCC model. Moreover, this study showed that reducing the total asset out of input variables, and raising the sales profit out of the output variables played a main role to increase the efficiency of the trucking companies highly.

This study suggests an approach for determining fleet size for container road transportation with dynamic demand. Usually the vehicles operated by the transportation trucking companies in Korea can be classified into three types depending on the ways how their expenses occur; company-owned truck, mandated truck which is owned by outsider who entrust the company with its operation, and rented vehicle (outsourcing). Annually the trucking companies should decide how many company-owned and mandated trucks will be operated considering vehicle types and the transportation demands. With the forecasted monthly data for the volume of containers to be transported a year, a heuristic algorithm using tabu search is developed to determine the number of company-owned trucks, mandated trucks, and rented trucks in order to minimize the expected annual operating cost. The idea of the algorithm is based on both the aggregate production planning (APP) and the pickup-and-delivery problem (PDP). Finally the algorithm is tested for the problem how the trucking company determines the fleet size for transporting containers.

A DEA and Malmquist Index Approach to Measuring Productivity and Efficiency of Korean Trucking Companies (DEA와 Malmquist 지수를 활용한 화물자동차운송업체의 효율성 및 생산성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency and productivity of domestic trucking transportation companies using DEA-CCR, BCC, and Malmquist indexes. Here, we analyze the top 14 domestic trucking transportation companies, based on cargo volume. The number of freight agents, trucks, and assets are used as input variables, and cargo volumes and sales are used as output variables. The efficiency of trucking transportation companies is examined using a DEA approach, and Malmquist indexes are applied to analyze productivity. According to the DEA results, the efficiency levels of the CCR, BCC, and scales for three companies (DMU 4, 5, and 10) are 1, indicating that these companies are operated efficiently. At the same time, the Malmquist indexes show that all companies have values smaller than 1, except for the period 2012-2013, indicating that their productivity decreased. Furthermore, the TECI indexes were all larger than 1, except for the period 2012-2013, indicating that the companies are efficient. Lastly, all TCI indexes are smaller than 1, except for the period 2012-2013, indicating regressing trends.

Determination of Fleet Size for LTL Transportation With Dynamic Demand

  • This study suggests an approach for determining fleet size for LTL (less -than-truckload) transportation with dynamic demand for on-time supply of the parts between the assembly line in an automobile company and its part suppliers in Korea. The vehicles operated by the transportation trucking companies in Korea in general can be classified into three types depending on the ways how their expenses occur; company -owned truck, mandated truck which is owned by outsider who entrusts the company with its operation, and rented truck (outsourcing) . With the forecasted monthly production data a year, a heuristic algorithm is developed to determine the number of company-owned trucks, mandated trucks, and rented trucks in order to minimize the expected annual operating cost, which is based on the solution technologies used in the aggregate production planning and vehicle routing problem. Finally the algorithm is tested for the problem how the trucking company transports parts for the automobile company.

A Study on the Business Model and Implications of Korean Logistics Companies into Vietnam -The Case of Northern Vietnam- (국내 물류기업의 베트남 진출 비즈니스 모델과 시사점 - 베트남 북부 지역을 중심으로-)

  • This study examines the recent business models of domestic logistics companies in Hanoi and Hai Phong, Vietnam, and suggests implications. We introduced business models (coastal shipping, distribution center and ICD transportation, cold chain, border crossing, port development, etc.) that provide logistics services through cooperation with existing logistics companies (shippers, logistics companies, local companies, etc.). If we propose a partnership plan in the short and medium term, short-term projects include warehouse, ICD, trucking business, and it is feasible to not only collaborate with Korean companies that have already entered the market, but to also invest in joint ventures with local companies (up to 51% of local companies). In the long term, we can consider coastal transportation, cross-border transportation, trucking, and investment in new deep sea ports. All of these businesses require local partnerships, so local companies require a 51% stake.
