Measurement of water is a subject of continued interest. High resolution proton magnetic resonance has not been very effective in the determination of water. Especially spectral overlap with other proton signals from the sample is undesirable result. However, trifluoroacetic anhydride reacts with water and forms trifluoroacetic acid and the proton signal of trifluoroacetic acid did not overlap with that of samples. By use of this fact, water in acetone, ethyl ether, dioxane, dichloroethane and methyl isobutyl ketone is analyzed by high resolution proton magnetic resonance (PMR). This method is capable of detecting as little as 200ppm of $H_{2}O$. And it is very rapid, simple and accurate.

A 22-year-old woman was referred to our emergency department for the treatment of a chemical injury on her arm. She had accidentally spilled 99% trifluoroacetic anhydride (TFAA) over her left forearm during an organic chemistry experiment. She visited a primary care unit, and then she was referred to our hospital for inactivation of the released fluoride ions. Her skin lesions were different from those caused by hydrofluoric acid (HF) injury. The injured area showed painful whitish maculae and patchy areas with accentuated rim. No vesiculation and bulla formation was detected. We intradermally injected a 5% solution of calcium through a 24-gauge needle into the burned skin. After the injection, she complained of more severe pain. Although TFAA contains fluorine, it does not release free fluoride ions on contact with the skin, unlike HF. In fact, application of calcium gluconate for TFAA burns is not recommended. Rather, it should be avoided since it increases pain and local abscess formation.
Liquid chromatographic enantiomer separation of amino alcohols was performed on several chiral columns based on polysaccharide derivatives under the mobile phase conditions containing acid or base additive. The chromatographic parameters were greatly influenced by the nature of the mobile phase containing acid or base additive as well as the used chiral columns. Compared to chromatographic results obtained in the mobile phase containing base additive (0.1% triethylamine), especially, Chiralcel OD showed dramatically enhanced separation factors and resolution factors with reduced capacity factors under the mobile phase condition containing acidic additive (0.1% trifluoroacetic acid). When the mobile phase containing 0.05% trifluoroacetic acid and 0.05% triethylamine was used on Chiralcel OD, the greatest separation factors and resolution factors among all other mobile phase conditions in this study were observed.

An efficient synthesis of 2,2'-dipyrryl ketones has been carried out from pyrrole-2-carboxylic acids using trifluoroacetic anhydride (TFAA). Simultaneous generation of both mixed anhydride and 2-unsubstituted pyrrole, via facile decarboxylation with in-situ generated TFA, made their cross reaction (intermolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation) possible and efficient.
Peptides are naturally occurring biological molecules that are found in all living organisms. These biologically active peptides play a key role in various biological processes. The aim of this study is the extraction and the purification of bioactive materials that induce relaxation of an apical muscle from the pyloric caeca of Patiria pectinifera. The acidified pyloric caeca extract was partially separated by the solid phase extraction using a stepwise gradient on Sep-Pak C18 cartridge. Among the fractions, materials eluted with 60% methanol/0.1% trifluoroacetic acid was put a thorough of a series of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) steps to isolate a neuropeptide with relaxation activity. The purified compound was eluted at 28% acetonitrile in 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid with retention time of 25.8 min on the CAPCELL-PAK C18 reversed-phase column. To determine the molecular weight and the amino acid sequence of the purified peptide, LC-MS and Edman degradation method were used, respectively. The primary structure of the peptide was determined to be FGMGGAYDPLSAGFTD which corresponded to the amino acid sequence of a starfish myorelaxant peptide (SMP) isotype (SMPb) found in the cDNA sequence encoding SMPa and its isotypes. In this study, a muscle relaxant neuropeptide (SMPb) has been isolated from pyloric caeca of starfish P. pectinifera. This is the first report of SMPb isolation on the protein level from P. pectinifera.
The 2-(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-4-MDO (2) underwent polymerization with ring opening as well as cyclization reaction in the presence of various cationic catalysts such as boron trifluoride, trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, hydrochloric acid and trifluoroacetic acid. They afforded a mixture of the ring-opened poly(keto ether) and 3(2H)-dihydrofuranone derivative. Both the methylene group and oxygen atom of 1,3-dioxolane ring were participated in the reaction with cationic catalyst. The contents of the polymer and cyclization product were variable according to the acid strength of the cationic catalysts.
