The antifungal activities of the essential oil from Agastache rugosa and its main component, estragole, combined with ketoconazole, one of the azole antibiotics commonly used to treat infections caused by Trichophyton species, were evaluated in this study. The combined effects were measured by the checkerboard microtiter and the disk diffusion tests, against T. erinacei, T. mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, T. schoenleinii and T. soudanense. Susceptibility of the five Trichophyton species to the oil alone, or ketoconazole alone, differed distinctly. The fractional inhibitory concentration indices (FICI) of ketoconazole combined with estragole or A. rugosa essential oil, against the tested Trichophyton species, were between 0.05 and 0.27, indicating synergistic effects. These drug combinations exhibited the most significant synergism against T. mentagrophytes, with FICIs of 0.05 and 0.09 for estragole and the essential oil fraction from A. rugosa, respectively. Isobolograms based on the data from checkerboard titer tests also indicated significant synergism between ketoconazole and the Agastache oil fraction or estragole, against the Trichophyton species evaluated. Trichophyton susceptibility to ketoconazole was significantly improved by combination with the Agastache rugosa oil fraction or its main component, estragole.
We have evaluated the combined antifungal effects of the essential oil from Eucalyptus globulus or its main component 1,8-cineole with ketoconazole. Checkerboard microtiter tests were used to analyze their effects against three Candida and six Trichophyton species. The susceptibility of the Trichophyton species to E. globulus essential oil differed distinctly. The fractional inhibitory concentration indices (FICIs) against the tested Candida species ranged between 0.09 and 0.38 for ketoconazole combined with E. globulus essential oil or 1,8-cineole, indicating significant synergism between ketoconazole and the oil samples. Similar experiments using Trichophyton species resulted in FICIs between 0.28 and 0.63, indicating relatively weaker combined effects than those observed with Candida species. Thus, the data reported here show that the anti-Candida effects of ketoconazole can be significantly improved in the presence of E. globulus essential oil or 1, 8-cineole.

ITSI-5.8S-ITSII rDNA region was amplified from the reference strains and clinical isolates with ITS1 and ITS4 primers. These primers amplified DNA fragments of 550 bp in Microsporum audouinii and Trichophyton violaceum, 700 bp in Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, and Trichophyton tonsurans, and 750 bp in Microsporum ferreugineum and Microsporum canis. The restriction enzyme patterns of PCR products digested with 13 restriction enzyme including PstI were distint among the genera, whereas identical in the same species. Examination of the ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacers)1 nucleotide sequence revealed that there was the genetic difference in each genera and species. Phylogenetic relationship among each species showed that the Trichophyton mentagrophytes was more closely related Trichophyton tonsurans than Trichophyton rubrum, and Microsporum gypseum was less related than Microsporum spp..

Common dermatophytosis in upper Egypt were studied at three hospitals in Minia city. Tinea corporis (ringworm of glabrous skin) was diagnosed in 127 patients (84 males and 53 females). Trichophyton was the most common genus and was represented by 6 species among which T. violaceum was the commonest fungus. Microsporum was represented by 4 species and M. canis was the prevalent species. Tinea pedis (ringworm of the foot) was noticed in 22 cases (13 males and 9 females) and also Trichophyton and Microsporum were the causal organisms. Three species of Trichophyton namely: T. violaceum, T. kuryngei and Trichophyton sp. were isolated. Tinea cruis (ringworm of the groin) was diagnosed in 21 patients (16 males and 5 females). Epidermophyton floccosum was the most prevalent fungus associated with tinea cruris whereas Trichophyton and Candida were less frequent. Tinea unguium (ringworm of the nail) was diagnosed in 9 patients, 8 were females and one was male and the age incidence ranged between 5 and 55 years. M. canis occurred in 2 cases and T. mentagrophytes in one case. Out of 86 cases of tinea versicolor, 71 were males and 15 were females. Malassezia furfur was the main causal agent. All patients of candidiasis and paronychia were females and Candida was the most prevalent causal agent.
To determine whether the essential oil from Coriandum sativum and its main component, linalool, exhibit antifungal activity, we employed a broth dilution assay and disk diffusion test using common pathogenic Candida and Trichophyton species. Both coriander oil and linalool significantly inhibited growth of the tested fungi, with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) in the range of $0.03{\sim}2mg/ml$. Furthermore, in a checkerboard titer test, both the oil fraction and linalool exhibited synergism when combined with ketoconazole, with resultant FICIs ranging from 0.06 to 0.53. Notably, hyphal formation in C. albicans cells was obviously inhibited by C. sativum essential oil in this experiment.
The essential oil was extracted from the roots of Angelica dahurica Bentham et Hooker f. by steam distillation and its composition was analyzed by GC-MS. The antifungal activities were evaluated by micro-dilution method against five Aspergillus and three Trichophyton species. The most abundant component was ${\alpha}$-pinene (17.21%) among 40 compounds identified in this oil. The essential oil fraction of A. dahurica and ${\alpha}$-pinene exhibited marked inhibiting activities against the tested Aspergillus and Trichophyton species with MICs (minimum inhibitory concentrations) between 0.12 mg/ml and 8 mg/ml.
This report describes a case of severe and prolonged dermatophytosis in a hedgehog that was diagnosed by PCR-RFLP, a rapid and usefulness technique for identification of many causative agents and hereditary characters. A 5-month-old female hedgehog was presented with grade 2 facial pruritus, scaling, encrustation and hemorrhage. Cytology of exudates on the face showed a suspected fungal infection. A culture and tape imprint test of the cultured colony showed many hyphae and microcornidia, suspected to belong to the Trichophyton species. In the PCR-RFLP with MvaI and Hinf I, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinacei was finally identified as a causative agent. The patient completely recovered after application of nystatin cream for 17 days.
The antifungal activity of salicylaldehyde-o-phenylenediimine, a derivative of Schiff base, was studied in vitro against various species of fungi, especially, dermatophytes. The antifungal tests were performed according to the tube-dilution method, and all subcultures were incubated at room temperature for 14 days. Salicylaldehyde-o-phenylenediimine was effective against fungi such as Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum canis and Fonsecaea compacta. Trichophyton mentagrophytes was inhibited at $20{\mu}g$ per ml, Trichophyton rubrum at $40{\mu}g$ per ml, Microsporum canis at $6{\mu}g$ per ml, and Fonsecaea compacta at $2{\mu}g$ per ml.
The antifungal activities of essential oils from the leaves of Glehnia littoralis, which is cultivated in Korea, were evaluated against pathogenic Trichophyton species by the broth dilution method and the disk diffusion test. Additionally, the effects of the oils together with ketoconazole were tested by the checkerboard titer test. The essential oil fraction and its main components showed significant inhibition of the tested Trichophyton fungi, with minimal inhibitor concentrations (MICs) in the range of 16-32 mg/ml. The results suggest that activities of this oil are based mainly on the contents of ${\alpha}-pinene$ (22.17%), the next prominent component of the oil fraction, while the first main components ${\beta}-pinene$ (57.83%) have relatively mild activity. The MICs of ${\alpha}-pinene$ and ${\beta}-pinene$ were 1-4 mg/ml and 4-32 mg/ml, respectively. Additionally the Glehnia oil fraction and its main components as well, exhibited significant synergism with ketoconazole against Trichophyton rubrum.
The fungistatic effects of extract and crystal (A) of Berberis Koreans Palibin, a common shrub in Korea, were obeserved and compared with undecylenic acid and vegetable oil. In vitro studies, the spores of fungi were inoculated on Sabouraud's glucose agar media which contained compounds of various concentration, and the growth of the fungi was observed for 3 weeks. The species of the fungi used in these experiments were Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum gypseum, Microsporum audouini, Microsporum canis, Microsporum nanum, Microsporum cookei, Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton tonsurans and Trichophyton verrucosum. The results of the studies were as follows: 1. The growth of E. floccosum, M. audouni, M. canis, M. nanum, M. cookei, was inhibited in Sabouraud's glucose agar media containing extract and crystal (A) of Berberis Koreana Palibin 1 mg/ml.
