Objectives: In order to evaluate the association between occupational exposure to chloroethylene (TCE) and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), we conducted a meta-analysis of retrospective cohort studies and casecontrol studies and attempted to summarize the evidence of the association from molecular-epidemiological studies and experiments with human cells. Methods: In the meta-analysis, we restricted the analysis to those studies with data for chlorinated solvents, degreasers, or TCE. Studies involving dry cleaners or launderers were excluded from the analysis because use of TCE as a dry cleaning fluid has been rare since the 1960s. The data were combined using a random-effects model to estimate the summary risks (OR and RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Molecular evidence of the effect of TCE on human immune system were also reviewed and summarized. Results: Occupational exposure to TCE was strongly associated with NHL among cohort studies (number of studies=13, summary RR=1.33, 95% CI=1.04-1.70) whereas the association was not statistically significant among case-control studies (number of studies=15, summary OR=1.10, 0.98-1.23). When exposure level was considered, it became statistically significant for the highest exposure level (number of studies=5, summary OR=1.70, 1.25-2.32). Molecular evidences showed that TCE exposure in human or cultured human cells may cause a significant decrease immune cell subsets and changes in hormone levels related to immune response. Conclusions: Our results from meta-analysis and additional molecular evidence suggest that occupational exposure to TCE may cause NHL. However, unmeasured potential confounding and unclear dose-response relationships warrant further study on the role of TCE exposure in NHL carcinogenesis.
Cobalt titanates($CoTiO_x$), such as $CoTiO_3$ and $Co_2TiO_4$, have been synthesized via a solid-state reaction and characterized using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic(XPS) measurement techniques, prior to being used for continuous wet trichloroethylene(TCE) oxidation at $36^{\circ}C$, to support our earlier chemical structure model for Co species in 5 wt% $CoO_x/TiO_2$(fresh) and(spent) catalysts. Each XRD pattern for the synthesized $CoTiO_3$ and $Co_2TiO_4$ was very close to those obtained from the respective standard XRD data files. The two $CoTiO_x$ samples gave Co 2p XPS spectra consisting of very strong main peaks for Co $2p_{3/2}$ and $2p_{1/2}$ with corresponding satellite structures at higher binding energies. The Co $2p_{3/2}$ main structure appeared at 781.3 eV for the $CoTiO_3$, and it was indicated at 781.1 eV with the $Co_2TiO_4$. Not only could these binding energy values be very similar to that exhibited for the 5 wt% $CoO_x/TiO_2$(fresh), but the spin-orbit splitting(${\Delta}E$) had also no noticeable difference between the cobalt titanates and a sample of the fresh catalyst. Neither of all the $CoTiO_x$ samples were active for the wet TCE oxidation, as expected, but a sample of pure $Co_3O_4$ had a good activity for this reaction. The earlier proposed model for the surface $CoO_x$ species existing with the fresh and spent catalysts is very consistent with the XPS characterization and activity measurements for the cobalt titanates.
Perchloroethylene (tetrachloroethylene, PCE), a dry cleaning and degreasing solvent, can enter ground-water through accidental leak or spills. PCE can be degraded to trichloroethylene (TCE), 1, 1-dichloroethylene (DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC) as potential bio-product. These compounds have been reported that they can cause clinical diseases and cytotoxicity. However, only a little genotoxic information of these compounds has been known. In this study, we investigated DNA single strand breaks of PCE, TCE, DCE and VC by single cell gel electrophoresis assay, (comet assay) which is a sensitive, reliable and rapid method for DNA single strand breaks with mouse lymphoma L5178Y cells. From these results, $37.5\;{\mu}g/ml$ of PCE, $189\;{\mu}g/ml$ of TCE and $56.4\;{\mu}g/ml$ of DCE were revealed significant DNA damages in the absence of S-9 metabolic activation system meaning direct-acting mutagen. And in the presence of S-9 metabolic activation system, $41.5\;{\mu}g/ml$ of PCE, $328.7\;{\mu}g/ml$ of TCE and $949\;{\mu}g/ml$ of DCE were induced significant DNA damage. In the case of VC, it was revealed a significant DNA damage in the presence of S-9 metabolic activation system. Therefore, we suggest that chloroethylene compounds (PCE, TCE, DCE and VC) may be induced the DNA damage in a mammalian cell.
MFI(Mobil Five) structured hydrophobic ZSM-5 zeolite membrane was used for selective pervaporation of trichlorinated organic compounds(trichloromethane, trichloroethane, trichloroethylene) from their aqueous solutions. ZSM-5 zeolite membrane was hydrothermally synthesized on the inside of a porous stainless steel tube by secondary growth employing ZSM-5 seed powders. Separation factors for each binary mixtures were observed $16{\sim}66$ for trichloromethane/water, $3.3{\sim}4.6$ for trichloroethane/water and $1.4{\sim}8$ for trichloroethylene/water at the experimental conditions of the feed mole fraction from 0.0001 to 0.001 with temperature ranged $25{\sim}35^{\circ}C$.

Single-well-gas-sparging tests were developed and evaluated for assessing the feasibility of in-situ aerobic cometabolism of trichloroethylene (TCE), using propane as a growth substrate. To evaluate transport characteristics of dissolved solutes [sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) or bromide (non-reactive tracers), propane (a growth substrate), ethylene, propylene (nontoxic surrogates to probe for CAH transformation activity), and DO], push-pull transport tests were performed. Mass balance showed about 90% of the injected bromide and about 80% of the injected SF6 were recovered, and the recoveries of other solutes were comparable with bromide and slightly higher than SF6. A series of Gas-Sparging Biostimulation tests were performed by sparging propane/oxygen/argon/SF6 gas mixtures, and temporal ground water samples were obtained from the injection well under natural gradient 'drift' conditions. The decreased time for propane depletion and the longer time to deplete SF6 as a conservative tracer indicate the progress of biostimulation. Gas-Sparging Activity tests were performed. .Propane utilization, DO consumption, and ethylene and propylene cometabolism were well demonstrated. The stimulated propane-utilizers cometabolized ethylene and propylene to produce ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, as cometabolic by-products, respectively. Gas-Sparging Acetylene Blocking tests were performed by sparging gas mixtures including acetylene to demonstrate the involvement of monooxygenase enzymes. Gas substrate degradation was essentially completely Inhibited in the presence of acetylene, and no production of the corresponding oxides was also observed. The Gas-Sparging tests supports the evidences that the successive stimulation of propane-oxidizing microorganisms, cometabolic transformation of ethylene and propylene by the enzyme responsible for methane and propane degradation.
This study was to evaluate sorption and biodegradation rate affecting the natural dissipation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) in surface soil. To show the effect of sorption and biodegradation on the natural dissipation of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE), three types of vial experiments were employed; (1) sterilized, (2) non-sterilized, (3) non-sterilized/substrate enriched. Also three moisture contents was applied to find the moisture effect in each vial; (1) wilting point (12%, w/w), (2) field capacity (29%, w/w), (3) saturation (48%, w/w). The results suggested that keeping the soil moisture content at field capacity was desirable for TCA and TCE natural dissipation in the vial study.
Humic acids are macromolecules originated from natural water, soil, and sediment. The characteristics of humic acid enable it to change the distribution of metals as well as many kinds of organic contaminants and to determine the sorption of them from soil solution. To see the effect of humic acid on the removal rate of organic contaminants and heavy metals, batch-scale experiments were performed. As a natural geosorbent, black shale was used as a sorbent media, which showed hight sorption capacity of trichloroethylene (TCE), lead, cadmium and chromium. The effect of sorption-desorption, pH, ionic strength and the concentration of humic acid was taken into consideration. TCE sorption capacity by black shale was compared to natural bentonite and hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) modified bentonite. The removal rate was good and humic acid also sorbed onto black shale very well. The organic part of humic acid could effectively enhance the partition of TCE and it act as an electron donor to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Cationic metal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) also removed from the water by black shale. With 3 mg/L of humic acid, both Pb(II) and Cd(II) were removed more than without humic acid. That could be explained by sorption and complexation with humic acid and that was possible when humic acid could change the hydrophobicity and solubility of heavy metals. Humic acid exhibited desorption-resistivity with black shale, which implied that black shale could be an alternative sorbent or material for remediation of organic contaminants and heavy metals.
Hybrid barriers using reduction and immobilization were tested to remediate the groundwater contaminated with multi-pollutants in this study. Iron filings and HDTMA(hexadecyltrimethylammonium)-bentonite were simulated in columns to assess the performance of hybrid barriers for remediation of trichloroethylene(TCE)-contaminated water. TCE reduction rate for the mixture of iron filings and HDTMA-bentonite was about 7 times higher than that for iron filings, only suggesting the reduction of TCE was accelerated when HDTMA-bentonite was mixed with iron filings. TCE reduction rate for the two layers of iron and HDTMA-bentonite was nearly similar to that for iron filings alone, but the partition coefficient($K_d$) for the two layers was 4.5 times higher than for that iron filings only. TCE was immobilized in the first layer with HDTMA-bentonite, and then dechlorinated in the second layer with iron filings. HDTMA-bentonite may contribute to the increase in TCE concentration on iron surface so that more TCE can be reduced. Also, TCE removal in the hybrid barriers was not affected by chromate and naphthalene while the reduction rate of TCE with the co-existing contaminants by iron filings was significantly decreased. Significant TCE removal in this research indicates that the proposed hybrid barrier system has the potential to become the effective remediation alternative during the occurrence of oil shock. Also, if subsurface environments are contaminated with multi-pollutants that contain non-reducible compounds as well as reducible compounds such as TCE, the conventional reactive barriers cannot be applied to this subsurface environment, while the proposed hybrid system can be applied successfully.

Oxygen sensitivity and substrate requirement have been known as possible reasons for the intricate growth of Dehalococcoides spp. and limiting factors of for routinely applying bioaugmentation using anaerobic Dehalococcoides-containing microbes for remediating chlorinated organic compounds. To explore the effect of the short-term exposure of the short-term exposure of oxygen on Dehalococcoides capability, dechlorination performance, and hydrogen production fermentation from formate, an anaerobic reductive dechlorination mixed-culture (Evanite culture) including dehalococcoides spp. was in this study. In the results, once the mixed-culture were exposed to oxygen, trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation rate decreased and it was not fully recovered even addition of excess formate for 40 days. In contrast, hydrogen was continuously produced by hydrogen-fermentation process even under oxygen presence. The results indicate that although the oxygen-exposed cells cannot completely dechlorinate TCE to ethylene (ETH), hydrogen fermentation process was not affected by oxygen presence. These results suggest that dechlorinating microbes may more sensitive to oxygen than fermenting microbes, and monitoring dechlorinators activity may be critical to achieve an successful remediation of a TCE contaminated-aquifer through bioaugmentation using Dehalococcoides spp..
Evaporation of selected toxic volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons was studied in laboratory soil columns. The evaporation values were obtained for the ten volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons at two different temperatures ($12^{\circ}C$ and $21^{\circ}C$) from columns filled with silty clay loam and sandy loam soils. 1,1,1-Trichloroethane, trichloroethylene and chloroform evaporated considerably (36.7~54.6% removal), carbon tetrachloride, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, tetrachloroethylene, 1,3-dichlorobenzene, dichlorobromethane and dibromochloromethane to a lesser extent (15.3~39.3% removal), and bromoform evaporated poorly (<10 percent removal) at both temperature. Volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons concentration did not affect evaporation, no statistically significant difference in evaporation between the soil types was found. However, temperature affected evaporation, the effect of concentration on the evaporation was not conclusive.
