Electrorheological Properties of Phosphoric Ester Cellulose ER Fluids on the Elevated Temperature (온도 변화에 따른 인산 에스테르 셀룰로오스 ER 유체의 전기유변학적 특성)

  • The electrorheological (ER) behavior of suspensions in silicone oil of phosphoric ester cellulose powder (average particle size : 18$\pm$1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) was investigated on the elevated temperature up to 10$0^{\circ}C$. For development of anhydrous ER fluids using at wide temperature range, it should be researched to how the effect of temperature on the ER activities. As a first step, the anhydrous ER suspensions mixing with the phosphoric ester cellulose particles which were made from the phosphoric ester reaction of cellulose were measured. As increasing the temperature, not only the analysis of electrical properties such as dielectric constant current density and electrical conductivity but also the rheological properties of ER fluids were studied. From the experimental results, the temperature had a large influence to the ER properties of anhydrous ER fluids. The current density, conductivity and elecoorheological effect ($\tau$$_{A}$$\tau$$_{0}$) of phosphoric ester cellulose ER fluids were proportional to the temperature with power law. And the shear stress of them was closely related with the square of dielectric constant mismatch parameter ($\beta$$^2$) under constant shear rate and electric field.d.

Shape Design of Disk Seal in $SF_6$ Gas Safety Valve using Taguchi method (다구찌법을 이용한 $SF_6$가스 안전밸브용 디스크 시일 형상의 설계)

  • Sulfur Hexafluoride, SF6 is widely used for leak detection and as a gaseous dielectric in transformers, condensers and circuit breakers. SF6 gas is also effective as a cleanser in the semiconductor industry. This paper presents a numerical study of the sealing force of disk type seal in SF6 gas safety valve. The sealing force on the disk seal is analyzed by the FEM method based on the Taguch's experimental design technique. Disk seals in SF6 gas safety valve are designed with 9 design models based on 3 different contact length, compressive ratio and gas pressure. The calculated results of Cauchy stress and strain showed that the sealing characteristics of Teflon PTFE is more effective compared to that of FKM(Viton), which is related to the stiffness of the materials. And also, the contact length of the disk seal is important design parameter for sealing the SF6 gas leakage in the safety valve.

Analysis on the Friction Characteristics of Low Viscosity Engine Oils (저점도 엔진오일이 마찰특성에 미치는 영향에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • In this paper, the friction characteristic of engine bearings has been analyzed in terms of a friction loss power, a minimum film thickness and an oil film pressure. This analysis has been focused on the fuel economy improvement with a low viscosity engine oil such as SAE 0W-40, which is used for a friction loss reduction and increased for a Diesel fuel economy. The friction loss power, the minimum oil film thickness and oil film pressure distribution for plain bearings of a Diesel engine are analyzed using an AVL's EXCITE program with a conventional engine oils of SAE 5W-40 and 10W-40, and a low viscosity engine oil of SAE 0W-40. The computed results indicate that a viscosity of engine oils is closely related to the friction loss power and the decreased minimum film thickness in which is a key parameter of a load carrying capacity of an oil film pressure distribution. When the low viscosity engine oil is supplied to engine bearings, it does not affect to the formation of a minimum oil film thickness. But the friction loss power has been significantly affected by low viscosity engine oil at a low operating temperature of 0. Based on the FEM computed results, the low viscosity engine oil at a low temperature range will be an important factor for an improvement of the fuel economy improvement.

  • The morphologies of the wear debris are directly indicative of wear processes occuring in machinery and their severity. The neural network was applied to identify friction condition from the lubricated moving system. The four parameter(50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) of wear debris are used as inputs to the network and learned the friction coefficient. It is shown that identification results depend on the ranges of these shape parameter learned. The three kinds of the wear debris had a different pattern characteristic and recognized the friction condition and materials very well by neural network. We dicuss between the characteristic of wear debris and the friction coefficient and how the network determines difference in wear debris feature.

  • The effect of surface texture on elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) point contact of a ball Joint mechanism in small reciprocating compressors is studied numerically by using multigrid method. Pressure and film thickness profiles have been calculated for surface roughness with waviness of different orientations and transverse ridge and dent at minimum and maximum Hoes M parameter conditions. The influence of the amplitude and the wavelength of the surface roughness was also studied. Results show that the oblique waviness with orientation angle of 30$^{\circ}$generates the smallest minimum film thickness as compared with those of longitudinal, transverse, and other oblique roughness. The influence of transverse waviness on the minimum film thickness is smaller than for the longitudinal waviness case.

  • There is a certain relation between the performance characteristics of the porous metal bearing and the porosity. Since the relation is not explicit, author tried to investigate it by numerical analysis and experiment. The analysis and experiment show that the load carrying capacity decreases as porosity increases while attitude angle and friction parameter increase as porosity increases.

  • The wear particle analysis has been known as very effective method to foreknow and decide a moving situation and a damage of machine parts by using the digital computer image processing. But it was not laid down and trusted to calculate shape parameters of wear particle and wear volume. In order to apply image processing method in the foreknowledge and decision of lubricated condition, it needs to verify the reliability of the calculated data by the image processing and to lay down the number of images and the amount of wear particle in one image. In this study, the lubricated friction experiment was carried out in order to establish the optimum image capture with the SM45C specimen under experiment condition. The wear particle data were calculated differently according to the number of image and the amount of wear particle in one image.

  • The threshold of instability for a rigid rotor supported in externally pressurized airlubricated circular or non-circular journal bearings of finite length is theoretically analyzed. The analysis is performed for a bearing having one feeding plane, no recess volume, which is assumed to be a line source, and is based on a first order perturbation of journal center motion about steady state position. And then linearized system dynamic analysis is carried out. Numerical results are given, showing the threshold of instability as a function of supply pressure ratio, feeding parameter and load. It is shown that the region that 2-lobe bearing is more stable than circular bearing exists and whirl ratio of 2-lobe bearing is less than that of the other types of bearing.

On the Sealing Force of Perfluoroelastomer O-rings Including Temperature Effects (온도를 고려한 FFKM O-링의 밀봉력에 관한 연구)

  • O-ring seal is widely used for sealing pressure vessels and oil containers in various applications of mechanical equipments. The doughnut shape of the O-ring is very important components in most of the system assembly of mechanical apparatus. This paper presents the sealing force of a pressurized perfluoroelastomer O-ring, which is very important contact seal in sealing the semiconductor equipment. The sealing pressure is measured by experimental method and analyzed numerically by using the non-linear MARC finite element program. The seal tester is made to measure the contact force and displacement of the O-ring with an automatic control system of the working temperature. The results show the reasonable agreements between the computed FEM results and measured ones when the operating temperature is moderate temperature. But the compared values between the computed and tested results show a difference because of the increased temperature, which is related to the non-linear parameter of the O-ring material.
