  • Fine powders of amorphous $Al_2O_3,\;SiO_2,\;Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ system were prepared by hydrolysis of solutions containing alkoxides, aluminium tri-isopropoxide and silicon tetra-ethoxide. High purity ultrafine ${\beta}-sialon$ powders were prepared by the carbothermal reduction-nitridation of amorphous $Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ powders mixed with carbon black as a reducing agent. In the hydrolysis step the effect of the factors such as pH, reaction temperature and amount of water on the conversion rate of alkoxides to oxides was investigated. In the carbothermal reduction-nitridation the reaction path was assumed by the analysis of intermediates formed in the process of ${\beta}-sialon$ synthesis and the reaction kinetics of ${\beta}-sialon$ formation was considered.

  • Al2O3 film was chemically deposited by pyrolytic decom, positio of the Al-tri-isopropoxide/N2 system at 350$^{\circ}C$, 30 and 1.86torr. FTIR analysis showed a deposited film was a hydrated alumina and transformed to an anhydrous one after heat treatment(1hr, >800$^{\circ}C$ or 4hr, >500$^{\circ}C$) in N2 atmosphere. This transformation influenced on the CV-hysteresis of Si-Al2O3 structure. Also, a pH sensitivity of EIS(Electrolyte-Insulator-Semiconductor)structure using Si-Al2O3/SiO2 film was 50mV/pH in the range of pH 3 to 7.

  • The hydrogen abstraction reactions of $SiH_4, SiH_2Cl_2 \;and\; SiHCl_3$ by ground state chlorine atoms generated photochemically from chlorine molecules have been studied at temperatures between 15 and $100^{\circ}C.$ The absolute rates for the reactions have been obtained by a competition technique using ethane as a competitor. The rate expressions ($in cm^3/mol/s$) are found to conform to an Arrhenius rate law: $k_{SiH_4} = (7.98 {\pm} 0.42) {\times} 10^{13}$ exp $[-(1250 {\pm}20)/T].$ $k_{SiH_2Cl_2} = (2.25 {\pm} 0.12) {\times} 10^{15}$ exp[-(1010 ${\pm}$ 10)/T]. $k_{SiHCl_3} = (9.04 {\pm} 0.28) {\times} 10^{14}\; exp[-(1200 {\pm} 10)/T].$ The activation energies obtained from this study represent the same trend as with the carbon analogues, while this trend was not found with respect to the bond dissociation energies among silicon compound homologues. These anomalous behaviors were interpreted in terms of electronic effects and of the structural differences between these compounds.

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) coatings for tri-isotropic (TRISO) nuclear fuel particles were fabricated using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process onto graphite. A micro-tensile-testing system was developed for the mechanical characterization of SiC coatings at high temperatures. The fracture strength of the SiC coatings was characterized by the developed micro-tensile test in the range of $25^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$. Two types of CVD-SiC films were prepared for the micro-tensile test. SiC-A exhibited a large grain size (0.4 ~ 0.6 m) and the [111] preferred orientation, while SiC-B had a small grain size (0.2 ~ 0.3 mm) and the [220] preferred orientation. Free silicon (Si) was co-deposited onto SiC-B, and stacking faults also existed in the SiC-B structure. The fracture strengths of the CVD-SiC coatings, as measured by the high-temperature micro-tensile test, decreased with the testing temperature. The high-temperature fracture strengths of CVD-SiC coatings were related to the microstructure and defects of the CVD-SiC coatings.

  • Very High Temperature gas cooler Reactor (VHTR) has been considered as one of the most promising nuclear reactor because of many advantages including high inherent safety to avoid environmental pollution, high thermal efficiency and the role of secondary energy source. The TRISO coated fuel particles used in VHTR are composed of 4 layers as OPyC, SiC, IPyC and buffer PyC. The significance of CVD-SiC coatings used in tri-isotropic(TRISO) nuclear coated fuel particles is to maintain the strength of the whole particle. Various methods have been proposed to evaluate the mechanical properties of CVD-SiC film at room temperature. However, few works have been attempted to characterize properties of CVD-SiC film at high temperature. In this study, micro tensile system was newly developed for mechanical characterization of SiC thin film at elevated temperature. Two kinds of CVD-SiC films were prepared for micro tensile test. SiC-A had [111]-preferred orientation, while SiC-B had [220]-preferred orientation. The free silicon was co-deposited in SiC-B coating layer. The fracture strength of two different CVD-SiC films was characterized up to $1000^{\circ}C$.The strength of SiC-B film decreased with temperature. This result can be explained by free silicon, observed in SiC-B along the columnar boundaries by TEM. The presence of free silicon causes strength degradation. Also, larger Weibull-modulus was measured. The new method can be used for thin film material at high temperature.

  • Fully ceramic micro encapsulated (FCM) nuclear fuel is a concept recently proposed for enhancing the stability of nuclear fuel. FCM nuclear fuel consists of tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) fuel particles within a SiC matrix. Each TRISO fuel particle is composed of a $UO_2$ kernel and a PyC/SiC/PyC tri-layer which protects the kernel. The SiC ceramic matrix is created by sintering. In this FCM fuel concept, fission products are protected twice, by the TRISO coating layer and by the SiC ceramic. The SiC ceramic has proven attractive for fuel applications owing to its low neutron-absorption cross-section, excellent irradiation resistivity, and high thermal conductivity. In this study, a SiC-matrix composite containing TRISO particles was sintered by hot pressing with $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ additive system. Various sintering conditions were investigated to obtain a relative density greater than 95%. The internal distribution of TRISO particles within the SiC-matrix composite was observed using an x-ray radiograph. The fracture of the TRISO particles was investigated by means of analysis of the cross-section of the SiC-matrix composite.

  • Silicon carbide(SiC) layer is particularly important tri-isotropic (TRISO) coating layers because it acts as a miniature pressure vessel and a diffusion barrier to gaseous and metallic fission products in the TRISO coated particle. The high temperature deposition of SiC layer normally performed at $1500-1650^{\circ}C$ has a negative effect on the property of IPyC layer by increasing its anisotropy. To investigate the feasibility of lower temperature SiC deposition, the influence of deposition temperature on the property of SiC layer are examined in this study. While the SiC layer coated at $1500^{\circ}C$ obtains nearly stoichiometric composition, the composition of the SiC layer coated at $1300-1400^{\circ}C$ shows discrepancy from stoichiometric ratio(1:1). $3-7{\mu}m$ grain size of SiC layer coated at $1500^{\circ}C$ is decreased to sub-micrometer (< $1{\mu}m$) $-2{\mu}m$ grain size when coated at $1400^{\circ}C$, and further decreased to nano grain size when coated at $1300-1350^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the high density of SiC layer (${\geq}3.19g/cm^3$) which is easily obtained at $1500^{\circ}C$ coating is difficult to achieve at lower temperature owing to nano size pores. the density is remarkably decreased with decreasing SiC deposition temperature.

  • Recovery of acids from the waste etching solution of containing acetic, nitric and hydrofluoric acid discharged from silicon wafer manufacturing process has been attempted by using solvent extraction method. EHA(2-Ethylhexlalcohol) for acetic acid and TBP(Tri-butly Phosphate) for nitric and hydrofluoric acid as a extraction agent was used to the experiment to obtain the process design data in separation procedure. From the experimental data and McCabe-Thiele diagram analysis, we obtained the optimum conditions of phase ratio(O/A) and stages to separate each acid sequently from the mixed acids. The recovery yield was obtained above 90% for acetic acid from the acid mixtures, 90% for nitric acid from acetic acid extraction raffinate and then above 67% for hydrofluoric acid from final extraction raffinate.
