  • This study was carried out to develop eco-friendly wood street lamp (EFWSL) by using wood resources stacked in the forests after tree tending operations which were mostly abandoned, but economical as renewable wood resources for developing the wood coated street lamps with the effects of cost reduction and their attractive appearances. This study has led to the development of key compact structures of street-lighting wood poles (shaft) using laminated timber. The core technique in this study is related with producing the more stable wood poles (shaft) with the hole inside than wood poles exposed under the natural environment through applicable process to protect the wood from bursting and splitting. We also comprehensively developed the method to conserve the timber durability of wood shaft and connect the wood shaft with groove, race way to be located in the groove, locking ring, current stabilizer connected to the groove and luminaire support arm, base and hand-hole which was partly used in combination with steel materials and wood. Also we increased the utilization of abandoned and stacked woods after thinning in the forests such as Pinus densiflora, Larix leptolepis, and Pinus koraiensis plantations by maximizing the value of these natural wood resources as main materials of eco-friendly street lightings with the effects of cost reduction and attractive appearances and also the expectation of advertising effects of street lightings developed in this study.

  • Species of 741 charcoal samples, which were excavated from the dwelling sites of the bronze age $(about\;2500\~3100\;B.P)$ at Hyeonwha-ri, Pyungteak, Korea, were identified. Most of samples were deciduous oaks (Quercus spp.; $97.7\%$) and others were alders (Ainus spp.; $1.9\%$) and soft pines (Pinus spp.; $0.4\%$). Tree rings of nine largest samples were also examined. The numbers of annual rings were 8 to 36 and mean ring width was rather narrow $(0.65\~1.82\;mm)$. Most samples possessed pith and tylosis. The results indicate that logs 10 to IS cm diameter had been used for the poles of houses without further processing.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of plantation thinning on physical and mechanical properties of Larix kaempferi. Tree samples were obtained from unthinned, moderately, heavily thinned plantations where located in Kwangryung forest research stand. The effects of different thinning methods on the bending and parallel to grain compressive strengths of Larix kaempferi were explored. Average latewood ratio with various thinning treatments revealed the trend of unthinning < moderate thinning < heavy thinning treatment. Average annual ring width with various thinning treatments showed the trend of unthinning < moderate thinning or heavy thinning treatment. Average bending and parallel to grain compressive strengths with various thinning treatments revealed the trend of unthinning > moderate thinning > heavy thinning treatment. This indicates that thinning treatment reduces average bending and parallel to grain compressive strength properties.

  • Vegetation structure of $Hwangs\v{o}ng$ Park in $Ky\v{o}ugju$ was investigated to study ecological value and to suggest a desirable management proposal. To do this, twenty plots were set up and surveyed. The $Hwangs\v{o}ng$ Park forest was classified into five plant communities by the DCA technique, which were two types of Pinus densiflora communities, Quercus spp.-P. densiflora, Robinia pseudoacacia and Q. mongolica community. In the diversity analysis, 29 woody species were observed, but species composition was simple. No. of average species is $5.4\pm2.9$ per a plot($100m^2$), and Pinus densiflora is a dominant species in DBH $27\sim47cm$ class. From the results of tree ring and growth analysis, it was found out that pinus densiflora community of $Hwangs\v{o}ng$ Park has a historical and ecological value, but recently the growth rate was decreasing. The management proposal was suggested upon to the above results.

  • The Hapchon Dam, located upstream of the Hwang River, Korea, was constructed in December, 1988. Due to the lack of storage of water, the dam gate has not been operated during last ten years. Thus, a new ecosystem has been established at the downstream part of the dam. This is not a common phenomenon which can be found elsewhere in the country. The present study investigates the effect of flow regime change on the river morphology and vegetation cover in the downstream river reach after the dam construction. The analysis of flow regime is carried out, and the changes in bed elevation and in channel cross sections are examined. Site investigations including tree ring tests are also performed. The increase in the vegetation cover is estimated by comparing aerial photographs taken before and after dam construction.

  • The purpose of this study was to carry out radiocarbon dating using a wiggle match, of wooden boards and grains from the Mado shipwreck No. 4, which was excavated from Mado in Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. The result of the wiggle matching for four decennial tree-ring samples of the stern plank produced a ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ radiocarbon date (95.4% confidence interval) of A.D. 1337-1356 or A.D. 1412-1429. The grains produced a ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ radiocarbon date (95.4% confidence interval) of A.D. 1415-1455. This indicated that the Mado shipwreck No. 4 belonged to the early or middle of the 15th century. These radiocarbon dating results correlate with the date that was speculated by archaeologists according to the ship's structure and ceramic style.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the annual variation in diameter growth of Quercus spp. and climatic factors such as monthly temperature, precipitation and solar radiation in central and northern Korea. Annual diameter growth was measured by using stem cores of 262 Quercus trees, and the correlation between the diameter growth and the climatic factors was analyzed. Mean diameter growth of Quercus spp. in Jungwangsan was larger than that in Woraksan, and mean diameter growth by the species was large in order of Q. serrata>Q. variablis>Q. mongolica>Q. dentata. The diameter growth pattern of Quercus spp. in Woraksan was different from that in Jungwangsan. Positive correlations between diameter growth of Quercus trees and temperature or the solar radiation during July were found in Jungwangsan. Significant correlations between diameter growth and solar radiation during March and precipitation during June were found in Woraksan. It is suggested that climatic factors similarly affect the diameter growth of Quercus spp. in a mountainous terrain, but influences of the climatic factors depend on other environmental conditions such as altitude, topography and soil depth.
