Failure analysis of prestressing steel wires

  • This paper treats the failure analysis of prestressing steel wires with different kinds of localised damage in the form of a surface defect (crack or notch) or as a mechanical action (transverse loads). From the microscopical point of view, the micromechanisms of fracture are shear dimples (associated with localised plasticity) in the case of the transverse loads and cleavage-like (related to a weakest-link fracture micromechanism) in the case of cracked wires. In the notched geometries the microscopic modes of fracture range from the ductile micro-void coalescence to the brittle cleavage, depending on the stress triaxiality in the vicinity of the notch tip. From the macroscopical point of view, fracture criteria are proposed as design criteria in damage tolerance analyses. The transverse load situation is solved by using an upper bound theorem of limit analysis in plasticity. The case of the cracked wire may be treated using fracture criteria in the framework of linear elastic fracture mechanics on the basis of a previous finite element computation of the stress intensity factor in the cracked cylinder. Notched geometries require the use of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics and numerical analysis of the stress-strain state at the failure situation. A fracture criterion is formulated on the basis of the critical value of the effective or equivalent stress in the Von Mises sense.

소성온도가 도자기의 기계적 특성 및 접촉손상에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Firing Temperature on Mechanical Property and Contact Damage in Pottery)

  • A study is made of mechanical properties of unglazed matrix as a funtion of sintering temperature and crack patterns in layer structur pottery consisting of glaze and substrate and in matrix which is sintered at 120$0^{\circ}C$ and 130$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. The mechanical properties of matrix are increased due to density and vitrification to 130$0^{\circ}C$ The interface of glazed bilayer reveals the reactive intermediate layer. Herzian indentation testing is used to investigate the evolution of damage modes as a function of load. In the materials sintered at 120$0^{\circ}C$ quasi-plastic deformation is developed at the matrix and the cone-like cracks initiate at the glazing top surface and additionally upward-extending transverse cracks initiate at the internal in-just initiate at the glazing top surface which pass through the interface with increasing of indentation load. Finally the dominant damage mode shifts from substrate quasi-plasticity to coating fracture with increasing sintering temperature.

아스팔트 콘크리트 포장용 균열실링재의 부착특성 평가 (Evaluation of Adhesion Characteristics of Crack Sealants Used in Asphalt Concrete Pavement)

  • Cracking is an inevitable fact of asphalt concrete pavements and plays a major role in pavement deterioration. Pavement cracking is one of the main factors determining the frequency and method of repair. Cracks can be treated with a number of preventative maintenance actions, including overlay surface treatments such as slurry sealing, crack sealing, or crack filling. Pavement cracks can show up as one or all of the following types: transverse, longitudinal, fatigue, block, reflective, edge, and slippage. Crack sealing is a frequently used pavement maintenance treatment because it significantly extends the pavement service life. However, crack sealant often fails prematurely due to a loss of adhesion. Because current test methods are mostly empirical and only provide a qualitative measure of the bond strength, they cannot accurately predict the adhesive failure of the sealant. This study introduces a laboratory test aimed at assessing the bonding of hot-poured crack sealant to the walls of pavement cracks. A pneumatic adhesion tensile testing instrument (PATTI) was adopted to measure the bonding strength of the hot-poured crack sealant as a function of the curing time and temperature. Based on a limited number of test results, the hot-poured crack sealants have very different bonding performances. Therefore, this test method can be proposed as part of a newly developed performance-based standard specification for hot-poured crack sealants for use in the future. PURPOSES : The purpose of this study was to evaluate both the adhesion and failure performance of a crack sealant as a function of its curing time and curing temperature. METHODS: A pneumatic adhesion tensile testing instrument (PATTI) was adopted to measure the adhesion performance of a crack sealant as a function of the curing time and curing temperature. RESULTS: With changes in the curing time, curing temperature, and sealant type, the bond strengths were found to be significantly different. Also, higher bond strengths were measured at lower temperatures. Different sealant types produced completely different bond strengths and failure behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: The bonding strength of an evaluated crack sealant was shown to differ depending on various factors. Two sealant types, which were composed of different raw materials, were shown to perform differently. The newly proposed test offers the possibility of evaluating and differentiating between different crack sealants. Based on alimited number of test results, this test method can be proposed as part of a newly developed performance-based standard specification for crack sealants or as part of a guideline for the selection of hot-poured crack sealant in the future.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a damage model based on damage mechanics that can be used to analyze the mechanical behavior of structures with defects and the global behavior of damaged structures. A modified second order damage tensor that can be applied to finite element analysis is used to reflect the effect of damage. The damage stress computed from the effective stress is considered as an additional loading term acting on nodes and can represent the effect of crack surface. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing the analysis results with the experimental data from other studies and the analysis results based on transverse isotropic theory. The developed damage model is applied to the analyses of structures with cracks under linear elastic condition. Numerical results show that the developed model can effectively analyze the global behavior of damaged structures.

내화패널이 부착된 프리캐스트 PSC 풍도슬래브의 정적/동적하중에 관한 실험연구 (Experimental Studies on PSC Airpit-Slab with Fire Resistance Panel under Static and Dynamic Loads)

  • 본 연구에서는 장대터널이나 지하차도 등에 시공되는 횡류식 환기시스템을 구성하는 내화패널이 부착된 프리캐스트 풍도슬래브의 구조성능을 평가하기 위해서 실물모형 구조실험을 수행하였다. 또한, 내화패널의 휨강도와 Pull-off test를 통하여 내화패널과 슬래브의 부착성능 등의 기초성능을 우선적으로 확인하였다. 실물모형시험은 내화패널과 프리캐스트 PSC 슬래브의 정적 휨성능과 차량의 통행 시 발생하는 표면압력 이상의 하중에 대한 동적피로부착성능을 평가하였다. 동적피로하중 시험에서 내화패널과 PSC 슬래브 사이의 탈락이나 손상은 발생하지 않았으며, 정적재하시험에서도 매우 안정적인 거동을 보였으며, 하부에 부착된 내화패널의 탈락은 발생하지 않았다. 따라서 시공 중이나 시공 후 외부하중에 의해 내화패널의 탈락은 발생하지 않을 것으로 판단된다.

광섬유 A-EFPI 센서를 이용한 직교적층 복합재료의 표피층 및 내부층의 변형률 해석 (Strain Analysis in the Skin and Core Layers of Cross-Ply Composite Laminates Using A-EFPI Optical Fiber Sensor)

  • 유리 섬유 강화 플라스틱 직교적층판의 내부층과 표피층의 길이방향 변형률을 삽입된 절대변형 외부 페브리 페로 간섭 센서를 이용하여 측정하였다. 투과식 광학현미경을 이용하여 삽입된 A-EFPI 센서 주위의 파손거동을 관찰하였다. 시험편 표면부의 변형률 측정을 위해 포일 형식의 스트레인 게이지를 시험편 아래 위 표면부에 부착하였다. 또한 삽입된 A-EFPI 센서로 측정한 내부층과 표피층의 길이방향 변형률 값은 스트레인 게이지로 측정한 시험편 표면의 변형률 값 보다 다소 크게 나타났다. 균일 응력 모델을 기초로 한 3차원 유한요소해석을 통해 실험 결과의 타당성을 확인하였으며 내부층의 큰 변형률은 많은 횡단형 균열의 발생을 야기시켰는데 이로 인해 내부층에 삽입된 광섬유센서의 고장시 변형률이 급격히 낮아졌다.

A Case Study of Concrete Pavement Deterioration by Alkali-Silica Reaction in Korea

  • The concrete pavement of the Seohae Highway in Korea has suffered from serious distress, only four to seven years after construction. Deterioration due to Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) has seldom been reported per se in Korea, because the aggregate used for the cement concrete has been considered safe against alkali-silica reaction so far. The purpose of this study is to examine the deterioration caused by an alkali-silica reaction of concrete pavement in Korea. The investigation methods included visual inspection and Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN) analysis of surface cracks, coring for internal cracks, stereo microscopic analysis, scanning electronic microscope (SEM) analysis, and electron dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) analysis. The results are presented as follows: the crack pattern of the concrete pavement in Korea was longitudinal cracking, map cracking or D-cracking. Local areas of damage were noticed four to five years after construction. The cracks started from edges or joints and spread out to slabs. The most intensive cracking was observed at the intersection of the transverse and longitudinal joints. Where cracking was the most intense, pieces of concrete and aggregate had spalled away from top surface and joint interface area. The progress of deterioration was very fast. The reaction product of alkali-silica gel was clearly identified by its generally colorless, white, or very pale yellow hue seen through a stereo optical microscopy. The typical locations of the reaction product were at the interface between aggregate and cement paste in a shape of a rim, within aggregate particles in the cracks, and in the large void in the cement paste. Most of the white products were found at interface or internal aggregates. SEM and EDX analysis confirmed that the white gel was a typical reaction product of ASR. The ASR gel in Korea mainly consisted of Silicate (Si) and Potassium (K) from the cement. The crack in the concrete pavement was caused by ASR. It seems that Korea is no longer safe from alkali-silica reaction.

수정된 2차손상텐서를 이용한 손상된 구조체의 거동해석 (Global Behavior Analyses of Structures with Damages Using a Modified Second Order Damage Tensor)

  • 본 연구는 결함을 지닌 구조체의 거시적인 역학적 거동을 손상역학이론에 근거하여 해석할 수 있는 손상모델을 개발하고 이를 손상을 입은 구조체에 적용하여 손상된 구조체의 전체거동을 해석적으로 규명하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 수정된 2차손상텐서를 이용하였으며, 유효응력을 통해서 산정된 손상응력을 절점에 작용하는 추가의 하중 항으로 고려할 수 있고 균열면의 성질을 반영할 수 있는 유한요소해석 알고리즘을 개발하였다. 개발된 알고리즘은 실험치 및 횡등방성 이론에 의한 이론치와의 비교·검증을 통하여 그 신뢰성을 검토하였다. 선형탄성 가정 하에서 균열을 지닌 구조체에 개발된 알고리즘을 적용하여 해석한 결과, 균열의 방향과 균열군에 따른 손상된 구조체의 거동을 정량적으로 추정할 수 있었다. 개발된 모델을 균열이 존재하는 암반의 굴착문제와 파쇄대를 지니고 있는 지하구조체 문제에 적용해 본 결과, 손상으로 인해 야기되는 구조체의 전체 거동상의 차이를 규명할 수 있었다.

윤하중을 받는 강바닥판 교면포장의 변형특성에 대한 수치해석적 연구 (A Numerical Study for Deformation Characteristics of the Wearing Surface on a Steel Plate Deck under Wheel Loads)

  • 강바닥판 교량의 교면포장은 차량의 윤하중을 상판에 고르게 분포시켜 교량 상판을 보호하는 역할을 한다. 하지만 교량의 장대화가 가속화됨에 따라 포장체와 강바닥판의 두께가 얇아지고 이 때문에 교면포장의 횡방향 균열이 빈번하게 발생한다. 본 연구에서는 강바닥판 교면포장의 파손원인 규명과 저감 방안을 모색하기 위해 윤하중을 받는 강박스형 거더를 가진 강바닥판의 유한요소해석을 수행하였다. 다양한 구조적 매개변수 변화에 따른 교면포장 상면 변형도를 조사한 결과 해석결과에서 공통적으로 웹 상단에서 큰 인장변형이 발생하였고, 이것이 교면포장의 구조적인 파손의 주요 원인이 되는 것을 알 수 있다.

충격하중을 받는 CFRP 적층판의 충격손상과 굽힘 잔류강도 직교 이방성 적층판의 충격손상과 파과메카니즘 (Impact Damge and Residual Bending Strength of CFRP Composite Laminates Subjected to Impact Loading Fracture Mechanism and Impact Damage of Orthotropy Laminated Plates)

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the decreasing problems of residual bending strength, and the fracture machanism experimentally when CFRP composite laminates are subjected to Foreign Object Damage. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CFRP orthotropy laminated plates, which have two-interfaces [O/sub 6//sup o//90/sub 6//sup o/]sub sym/ and four-interfaces [O/sub 3//sup o//90/sub 6//sup o//O/sub 3//sup o]/sub sym/. When the specimen is subjected to transverse impact by a steel ball, the delamination area generated by impact damage is observed by using SAM(Scanning Acoustic Microscope). also, Thefracture surfaces obtained by three-point bending test were observed by using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). Then, fracture mechanism was investigated based on the observed delamination area and fracture surface. The results were summarized as follows; (1) It is found that for the specimen with more interface, the critical delamination energy is increased while delamination-development energy is decreased. (2) Residual bending strength of specimen A is greater than that of Specimen B within the impact range of impact energy 1. 65J (impacted-side compression) and 1. 45J (impacted-side tension). On the other hand, when the impact energy is beyond the above ranges, residual bending strength of specimen A is smaller than that of specimen B. (3) In specimen A and B, residual strength of CFRP plates subjected to impact damage is lower in the impacted-side compression than in the impacted-side tension. (4) In the case of impacted-side compression, fracture is propagated from the transverse crack generat-ed near impact point. On the other hand, fracture is developed toward the impact point from the edge of interface-B delamination in the case of impacted-side tension.
