  • Dry shrinkage md temperature change cause to develope concrete bridge decks on main girders have initial unidirectional cracks in longitudinal or transverse direction. As they receive traffic loads, the crack gradually propagate in different directions depending on the concrete dimension and reinforcement ratio. Since existing equations that predict crack width are mostly based on the one directional bond-slip theory, it is difficult to determine the actual crack width of a bridge deck with varying the spacing of rebar or strengthening material and to estimate the improvement rate in serviceability of the strengthened bridge deck. In this study, crack propagation mechanism is identified based on the test results and a new crack prediction equation is proposed for evaluation of serviceability. Although more accurate results are derived using the proposed equation, the extent of error is increased as the strain of the rebar or the strengthening material increases after the yielding of rebar Therefore, further research is required to better predict the crack width after the rebar yields under fatigue loading condition.

  • To reduce the story height for high-rise buildings, the TEC Beam is developed as a new composite beam composed of structural tee, precast concrete, stirrup, and site-in-cast reinforced concrete slab. The preliminary test of the proposed system was performed for simple beams and it showed a good behavior. However, for the field application of the system, it is required to develope a steel moment resisting connection using steel brackets on which upper rebars of the TEC BEAM are anchored. In this paper, three types of the proposed system are experimentally investigated. The parameters of the test are as follows: (1) the spacing of transverse bars, (2) the ratio of width of rebar's layer to bracket length. Specimens were classified as semi-rigid full strength by the Eurocode 4. It could be concluded that the proposed moment resisting system shows a good structural behavior and may be applicable in the filed.

  • Experiments to determine heat transfer coefficients and friction factors are conducted on a stationary transverse parallel wire-screen rib roughened rectangular channel. The test section consists of 198 mm (W) x 40 mm (H) x 712 mm (L). The channel has the aspect ratio of 4.95 and hydraulic diameter of $D_h$=6.66 cm. Four wire screen ribs and a solid rib are used. 0.1 mm-thick-stainless steel foil heaters and thermocouples (T type) are used to measure the heat transfer coefficients. Reynolds numbers studied range from 20,000 to 60,000. The wire-screen rib height (e) to hydraulic diameter ($D_h$) ratio ($e/D_h$) is 0.075; spacing (p) to height ratio (p/e) is 10. Results indicate that the solid rib produces the greatest Nusselt number and friction factor.

  • Based on the dynamic tests of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) short columns confined by the hoop reinforcement, the dynamic failure mechanism and the mechanical parameters related to the constitutive relation of confined recycled aggregate concrete (CRAC) were investigated thoroughly. The fracturing sections were relatively flat and smooth at higher strain rates rather than those at a quasi-static strain rate. With the increasing stirrup volume ratio, the crack mode is transited from splitting crack to slipping crack constrained with large transverse confinement. The compressive peak stress, peak strain, and ultimate strain increase with the increase of stirrup volume ratio, as well as the increasing strain rate. The dynamic confining increase factors of the compressive peak stress, peak strain, and ultimate strain increase by about 33%, 39%, and 103% when the volume ratio of hoop reinforcement is increased from 0 to 2%, but decrease by about 3.7%, 4.2%, and 9.1% when the stirrup spacing is increased from 20mm to 60mm, respectively. This sentence is rephrased as follows: When the stirrup volume ratios are up to 0.675%, and 2%, the contributions of the hoop confinement effect to the dynamic confining increase factors of the compressive peak strain and the compressive peak stress are greater than those of the strain rate effect, respectively. The dynamic confining increase factor (DCIF) models of the compressive peak stress, peak strain, and ultimate strain of CRAC are proposed in the paper. Through the confinement of the hoop reinforcement, the ductility of RAC, which is generally slightly lower than that of NAC, is significantly improved.

  • In this study, a new retrofitting method for improving the seismic performance of reinforced concrete column was presented, in which prestressed steel strips were utilized as retrofitting stuff to confine the reinforced concrete column transversely. In order to figure out the seismic performance of concrete column specimen retrofitted by such prestressed steel strips methods, a series of quasi-static tests of five retrofitted specimens and two unconfined column specimen which acted as control specimens were conducted. Based on the test results, the seismic performance including the failure modes, hysteresis performance, ductility performance, energy dissipation and stiffness degradation of all these specimens were fully investigated and analyzed. And furthermore the influences of some key parameters such as the axial force ratios, shear span ratios and steel strips spacing on seismic performance of those retrofitted reinforced concrete column specimens were also studied. It was shown that the prestressed steel strips provided large transverse confining effect on reinforced concrete column specimens, which resulted in improving the shearing bearing capacity, ductility performance, deformation capacity and energy dissipation performance of retrofitted specimens effectively. In comparison to the specimen which was retrofitted by the carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) strips method, the seismic performance of the specimens retrofitted by the prestressed steel strips was a bit better, and with much less cost both in material and labor. From this research results, it can be concluded that this new retrofitting method is really useful and has significant advantages both in saving money and time over some other retrofitting methods.

  • For the purpose of utilizing the sawdust having poor combining properties as board raw material and resulting in dimensional instability of board, polypropylene chip (abbreviated below as PP chip) or oriented PP thread was combined with sawdust particle from white meranti(Shorea sp.). The PP chip was prepared from PP thread in length of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 cm for conventional blending application. Thereafter, the PP chip cut as above was combined with the sawdust particle by 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15% on the weight basis of board. Oriented PP threads were aligned with spacing of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5cm along transverse direction of board. The physical and mechanical properties on one, two and three layer boards manufactured with the above combining conditions were investigated. The conclusions obtained at this study were summarized as follows: 1. In thickness swelling, all one layer boards combined with PP chips showed lower values than control sawdustboard, and gradually clear decreasing tendendy with the increase of PP chip composition. Two layer board showed higher swelling value than one layer board, but the majority of boards lower values than control sawdustboard. All three layer boards showed lower swelling values than control sawdustboard. 2. In the PP chip and oriented thread combining board, the swelling values of boards combining 0.5cm spacing oriented thread with 1.0 or 1.5cm long PP chip in 12 and 15% by board weight were much lower than the lowest of one or three layer. 3. In specific gravity of 0.51, modulus of rupture of one layer board combined with 3% PP chip showed higher value than control sawdustboard. However, moduli of rupture of the boards with every PP chip composition did not exceed 80kgf/cm2, the low limit value of type 100 board, Korean Industrial Standard KS F 3104 Particleboards. Moduli of rupture of 6%, 1.5cm-long and 3% PP chip combined boards in specific gravity of 0.63 as well as PP chip combined board in specific gravity of 0.72 exceeded 80kgf/$cm^2$ on KS F 3104. Two layer boards combined with every PI' chip composition showed lower values than control sawdustboard and one layer board. Three layer boards combined with.1.5cm long PP chip in 3, 6 and 9% combination level showed higher values than control sawdustboard, and exceeded 80kgf/$cm^2$ on KS F 3104. 4. In modulus of rupture of PP thread oriented sawdustboard, 0.5cm spacing oriented board showed the highest value, and 1.0 and 1.5cm spacing oriented boards lower values than the 0.5cm. However, all PP thread oriented sawdustboards showed higher values than control saw-dustboard. 5. Moduli of rupture in the majority of PP chip and oriented thread combining boards were higher than 80kgf/$cm^2$ on KS F 3104. Moduli of rupture in the boards combining longer PP chip with narrower 0.5cm spacing oriented thread showed high values. In accordance with the spacing increase of oriented thread, moduli of rupture in the PP chip and oriented thread combining boards showed increasing tendency compared with oriented sawdustboard. 6. Moduli of elasticity in one, two and three layer boards were lower than those of control sawdustboard, however, moduli of elasticity of oriented sawdustboards with 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5cm spacing increased 20, 18 and 10% compared with control sawdustboard, respectively. 7. Moduli of elasticity in the majority of PP chip and oriented thread combining boards in 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5cm oriented spacing showed much higher values than control sawdustboard. On the whole, moduli of elasticity in the oriented boards combined with 9% or less combination level and 0.5cm or more length of PP chip showed higher values than oriented sawdustboard. The increasing effect on modulus of elasticity was shown by the PP chip composition in oriented board with narrow spacing. 8. Internal bond strengths of all one layer PP chip combined boards showed lower values than control sawdust board, however, the PP chip combined boards in specific gravity of 0.63 and 0.72 exceeded 1.5kgf/$cm^2$, the low limit value of type 100 board and 3kgf/$cm^2$, type 200 board on KS F 3104, respectively. And also most of all two, three layer-and oriented boards exceeded 3kgf/$cm^2$ on KS F. 9. In general, screw holding strength of one layer board combined with PP chip showed lower value than control sawdustboard, however, that of two or three layer board combined with PP chip did no decreased tendency, and even screw holding strength with the increase of PP chip composition. In the PP chip and oriented PP thread combining boards, most of the boards showed higher values than control sawdustboard in 9% or less PP chip composition.

  • Although composite construction has more mechanical advantages compared to noncomposite construction, the design of noncomposite construction for skew bridges with large skew angels has been often checked because composite construction may cause large stresses in the bridge deck. In this study, the analytical model considered dynamic behaviors for noncomposite skew bridges was proposed. Using the proposed analytical model, the validity of the application of noncomposite construction to skew bridges was checked. Also, the effects of interactions between the concrete deck and steel girders such as composite construction, partial composite construction, and noncomposite construction on the dynamic characteristics and dynamic behaviors of simply supported skew bridges were investigated. A series of parametric studies for the total 27 skew bridges was conducted with respect to parameters such as girder spacing, skew angle, and deck aspect ratio. Although the slip at the interfaces between the concrete deck and steel girders results in the reduction of seismic total base shear in the transverse direction due to period elongation, it causes an undesirable behavior of skew bridges by the modification in mode shapes and distributions of stiffness. Shear connectors placed by minimum requirements for partial composite action have an effect on reducing the girder stresses and deck stresses; except case of some skew bridges, the magnitude of the girder stresses and deck stresses obtained from partial composite skew bridges is similar to or slightly more than those acquired from composite skew bridges.

  • With the wide applications of fiber-reinforced composite material in aero-structures and mechanical parts, the design of composite joints have become a very important research area because the joints are often the weakest areas in composite structures. This paper presents an analytical study of the stress distributions in mechanically single-fastened and multi-fastened composite laminates. The finite element models which treat the pin and hole contact problem using a contact stress analysis are described. A dimensionless stress concentration factor is used to compare the stress distributions in composite laminates quantitatively In the case of single-pin loaded composite laminate, the effects of stacking sequence, the ratio of a hole diameter and the width of a laminate (W/D ratio), the ratio of hole diameter and distance from edge to hole (E/D ratio), friction coefficient and clamping force are considered. In the case of multi-pin loaded composite laminate, the influence of the number of pins, pitch distance, number of rows, row spacing and hole pattern are considered. The results show that P/D ratio and E/D ratio affect more on stress distributions near the hole boundary than the other factors. In the case of multi-pin loaded composite laminate, the stress concentration in the double column case is better than the other cases of multi-pin loaded composite laminate.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the analytical model for the hysteretic behavior of Reinforced Concrete bearn-column joints under various loading history. Discrete line elernents , YVith inelastic rotational spring was adopted to consider the movement of plastic hinging zone influenced by the details of longitudinal reinforcements. Also hysteretic model was constructed by excluding such variables which can not be utilized in dynamic analysis of Reinforced Concrete. structure that it will be adoptable in two-dimensional inelastic frame ardysis with 6-DOF. From the analysis of previous test results, it was found that stiffness deterioration caused by inelastic hysteretic loadings can be predicted by the functron of basic pinching coefficients, ductility ratio.and yield strength ratio of members. Strength degradation coefficients were newly proposed to explain the difference of inelastic behavior of members caused by spacing ratio of transverse steel and sectlon aspect ratio. The energy dissipation capacities calculated using the analytical model proposed in thls paper show a good agreements w~lh test results by an error of 10~20%.

  • Erosional basins formed in middle and upper reaches of Korean great rivers have been main life space of local small and middle cities, but previous studies on erosional basins are widely apart from residents' life and are in shortage with the endeavor to elucidate the man and environment relationship. This paper analyzes the factors and the modes of land-use changes of hills in the erosional basin. In this paper four erosional basins with different geological conditions are selected to elucidate the effect of geological factor(Geochang: granite, Chogye: metamorphic rock, Angye: gravelly sedimentary rock, Maseong: limestone). And the distribution of land use on the transverse and longitudinal cross-section map of the hill is described. The landscape of erosional basin is consisted of surrounding mountains, hills, dissected valleys, and incoming river's floodplain. Dissected valleys and incoming river's floodplain were reclaimed early as paddy field and hills have been used as woodland up to recently. Residents have a new appreciation of hills as a productive hill out of a traditional holy space[mountain] by influence of capitalistic thought that 'natural environment is a sort of productive resource'. Population increase is the another pressure of hill reclamation. The modes of landscape changes due to natural conditions are as follow: (1) In Geochang basin with dense tectolineament spacing, the gentle part of hill is used as field, orchard and agricultural-industrial complex site and the steep part is as woodland. (2) Hills in Angye basin with sparse tectolineament spacing are relatively flat because of maintaining a part of original denudational surface, and are used as orchids, field, paddy fields and agricultural-industrial complex site. The dissection valleys between hills are gentle concave and are used as paddy fields. (3) Hills in Maseong basin are wide and flat, and are used as fields, orchards, and agricultural-industrial complex site. (4) Because hills in Chogye basin, a closed type, are weared by affluents and are narrow and short. Hills are used as woodland and wide dissected valleys are reclaimed as paddy fields.
