  • In the present work, the recently developed non-polynomial shear deformation theories are assessed for thermo-mechanical response characteristics of laminated composite plates. The applicability and accuracy of these theories for static, buckling and free vibration responses were ascertained in the recent past by several authors. However, the assessment of these theories for thermo-mechanical analysis of the laminated composite structures is still to be ascertained. The response characteristics are investigated in linear and non-linear thermal gradient and also in the presence and absence of mechanical transverse loads. The laminated composite plates are modelled using recently developed six shear deformation theories involving different shear strain functions. The principle of virtual work is used to develop the governing system of equations. The Navier type closed form solution is adopted to yield the exact solution of the developed equation for simply supported cross ply laminated plates. The thermo-mechanical response characteristics due to these six different theories are obtained and compared with the existing results.

  • A new refined hyperbolic shear and normal deformation beam theory is developed to study the free vibration and buckling of functionally graded (FG) sandwich beams under various boundary conditions. The effects of transverse shear strains as well as the transverse normal strain are taken into account. Material properties of the sandwich beam faces are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The core layer is still homogeneous and made of an isotropic material. Equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions for the bending, free vibration and buckling analyses are obtained for simply supported sandwich beams. Illustrative examples are given to show the effects of varying gradients, thickness stretching, boundary conditions, and thickness to length ratios on the bending, free vibration and buckling of functionally graded sandwich beams.

  • This paper presents a new laminated plate theory for the cylindrical bending of laminated plated. The theory assumes that in plane displacements vary exponentially through plate thickness. Analytical solutions are derived for simply supported plates subjected to transverse loading. The accuracy of the present theory is examined for unsymmetric laminates, and the numerical results are compared with three-dimensional elasticity solutions of Pagano. The present theory predicts displacements and stresses for very thick plates very accurately. In particular, transverse shear stresses obtained form constitutive equations are predicted very accurately.

  • In the present study, a first order shear deformable Loop-subdivision triangular element which can handle transverse shear deformation of moderately thick shell and composite laminated or sandwich shells are developed. The developed element is more general than the previous one based on classical shell theory, since it includes the effect of transverse shell deformation and has standard five degrees of freedom per node. The quartic box spline function is employed as the interpolation basis function. Numerical examples for the benchmark static shell problems are analyzed to assess the performance of the developed subdivision shell element and locking trouble.

  • This paper presents a model for evaluating the contribution by arch action and frame action to shear resistance in shear-critical reinforced concrete beams without stirrup. The rotating angle softened truss model is employed to calculate the shear deformation of the web and the relative axial displacement of the compression and tension chord by the shear flow are also calculated. From this shear compatibility condition in a beam, the shear contribution by the arch action is numerically decoupled. The transverse strain obtained from the proposed model is selected for shear failure criterion. Using the failure criterion, shear strength of RC slender beams without stirrup is predicted.

  • In the first-order shear deformation laminated beam theory (FSDT), the Kirchhoff hypothesis is relaxed such that the transverse normals do not remain perpendicular to the midsurface after deformation. Bending behavior of laminated composite thin-walled beams with singly- and doubly-symmetric open sections under uniformly distributed and concentrated loads is analyzed by the Timoshenko-type thin-walled beam theory. A closed-form expression for the shear correction factor of I-shaped composite laminated section is obtained. Numerical examples are presented to compare present analytical solutions by FSDT with the finite element solutions obtained by using three dimensional model. The effects of lamination of scheme and length-to-height ratio on the shear deformation of laminated composite beams with various boundary conditions are studied.

  • A simple hyperbolic shear deformation theory taking into account transverse shear deformation effects is proposed for the free flexural vibration analysis of thick functionally graded plates resting on elastic foundations. By considering further supposition, the present formulation introduces only four unknowns and its governing equations are therefore reduced. Hamilton's principle is employed to obtain equations of motion and Navier-type analytical solutions for simply-supported plates are compared with the available solutions in literature to check the accuracy of the proposed theory. Numerical results are computed to examine the effects of the power-law index and side-to-thickness ratio on the natural frequencies.

  • A new first-order shear deformation theory is developed for dynamic behavior of functionally graded beams. The equations governing the axial and transverse deformations of functionally graded plates are derived based on the present first-order shear deformation plate theory and the physical neutral surface concept. There is no stretching-bending coupling effect in the neutral surface based formulation, and consequently, the governing equations and boundary conditions of functionally graded beams based on neutral surface have the simple forms as those of isotropic plates. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions.
