  • Unlike concrete bridge, steel bridge resists external force by forming thin plate. Thus, because steel girder bridge has big slenderness ratio, buckling is a major design factor. Plate girder consists of flange and web plate. Because of economic views, web plate that resists shear forces is made by more thinner plate. Thus, web plate has much risk for buckling. The objective of this study is to analyze the buckling behaviors of plate girder and to present the proper reinforcement location of longitudinal stiffeners. Various parametric study according to the change of web height, transverse stiffeners and load condition are examined.

  • In this analytical study numerous prior experimental studies on reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections subjected to cyclic loading are investigated and a database of geometric properties, material strengths, configuration details and test results of subassemblies is established. Considering previous experimental research and employing statistical correlation method, parameters affecting joint shear capacity are determined. Afterwards, an equation to predict the joint shear strength is formed based on the most influential parameters. The developed equation includes parameters that take into account the effect of eccentricity, column axial load, wide beams and transverse beams on the seismic behavior of the beam-to-column connections, besides the key parameters such as concrete compressive strength, reinforcement yield strength, effective joint width and joint transverse reinforcement ratio.

  • The shear contribution of transverse steel in reinforced concrete beams is generally assumed as independent of the concrete strength by most of the building codes. The shear strength of RC beams with web reinforcement is worked out by adding the individual contributions of concrete and stirrups. In this research 70 beams of medium strength concrete in the range of 52-54 MPa, compressive strength were tested in two sets of 35 beams each. In one set of 35 beams no web reinforcement was used, whereas in second set of 35 beams web reinforcement was used to check the contribution of stirrups. The values have also been compared with the provisions of ACI, Eurocode and Japanese Code building codes. The results of two sets of beams, when compared mutually and provisions of the building codes, showed that the shear strength of beams has been increased with the addition of stirrups for all the beams, but the increase is non uniform and irregular. The comparison of observed values with the provisions of selected codes has shown that EC-02 is relatively less conservative for low values of longitudinal steel, whereas ACI-318 overestimates the shear strength of RC beams at higher values of longitudinal steel. The Japanese code of JSCE has given relatively good results for the beams studied.

  • This experimental study investigates the effectiveness of applying carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) jackets for the retrofit of short reinforced concrete (RC) columns with inadequate transverse reinforcement and stirrup spacing to longitudinal rebar diameter equal to 12. RC columns scaled at 1/3, with round and square section, were subjected to axial compression up to failure. A damage scale is introduced for the assessment of the damage severity, which focusses on the extent of buckling of the longitudinal rebars. The damaged specimens were subsequently repaired with unidirectional CFRP jackets without any treatment of the buckled reinforcing bars and were finally re-tested to failure. Test results indicate that CFRP jackets may be effectively applied to rehabilitate RC columns (a) with inadequate transverse reinforcement constructed according to older practices so as to meet modern code requirements, and (b) with moderately buckled bars without the need of previously repairing the reinforcement bars, an application technique which may considerably facilitate the retrofit of earthquake damaged RC columns. Factors for the estimation of the reduced mechanical properties of the repaired specimens compared to the respective values for intact CFRP-jacketed specimens, in relation to the level of damage prior to retrofit, are proposed both for the compressive strength and the average modulus of elasticity. It was determined that the compressive strength of the retrofitted CFRP-jacketed columns is reduced by 90% to 65%, while the average modulus of elasticity is lower by 60% to 25% in respect to similar undamaged columns jacketed with the same layers of CFRP.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavior characteristics of new hollow reinforced concrete (RC) bridge pier sections with triangular reinforcement details and to provide the details and reference data. Among the numerous parameters, this study concentrates on the shape of the section, the reinforcement details and the spacing of the transverse reinforcement. Additional eight column section specimens were tested under quasi-static monotonic loading. In this study, the computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), was used. A innovative confining effect model was adopted for new hollow bridge pier sections. This study documents the testing of new hollow RC bridge pier sections with triangular reinforcement details and presents conclusions based on the experimental and analytical findings.

  • Experimental research was conducted to investigate structural performance of concrete columns confined with welded reinforcement grids were tested under simulated seismic loading. The columns were subjected to constant axial compression accompanied by incrementally increasing lateral deformation reversals. The results indicate thar welded reinforcement grid can be used effectively as confinement reinforcement provided that the steel used, have sufficient ductility and the welding process employed does not alter the strength and elongation characteristics of steel. The grids improved the structural performance of columns, which developed lateral drift ratios in excess of 3% with the spacing and volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement similar to those required by the ACI 318-95 Building Code.

  • A proper estimation of the mechanical properties for composites has been required for better design/selection of constituents for composite materials. Present investigation shows the simulation results for ceramic reinforced metal matrix composite under uniaxial transverse tensile loading. The resulting transverse mean stress with the transverse mean strain was described for composites as a function of the volume fraction with two different types of interfacial bonding: (1)strongly bonded interface, and (2)no bonded interface. A two-dimensional finite element modeling and analysis were conducted based on the unit-cell concept with an assumption of a regular square arrangement of the reinforcement within the composite. The mean stress was generally increased with the ceramic volume fraction for composite with strong interface bonding. The micromechanics concept combined with finite element modeling for composite can be used in order to predict the transverse properties of composites with a priori known properties of constituents.
