  • In this study, stator shroud injection in a single-stage transonic axial compressor is proposed. A parametric study of the effect of stator shroud injection on aerodynamic performances was conducted using the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The curvature, length, width, and circumferential angle of the stator shroud injector and the air injection mass flow rate were selected as the test parameters. The results of the parametric study show that the aerodynamic performances of the single-stage transonic axial compressor were improved by stator shroud injection. The aerodynamic performances were the most sensitive to the injection mass flow rate. Further, the total pressure ratio and adiabatic efficiency were the maximum when the ratio of circumferential angle was 10%.

  • In this study, to find the effect of nonequilibrium condensation on the oscillation of the terminating shock wave in transonic flows, an NACA0014 airfoil flow with nonequilibrium condensation is analyzed using the total variation diminishing (TVD) numerical scheme. Transonic free stream Mach numbers of 0.81-0.87 are tested with variations in the stagnation relative humidity. For the same free stream Mach number and attack angle of ${\alpha}=0^{\circ}$, an increase in the stagnation relative humidity attenuates the strength of the terminating shock and reduces the oscillation of the terminating shock wave. Furthermore, for the same stagnation relative humidity, the larger the free stream Mach number becomes, the shorter the period of the oscillation shock wave is. The excursion distance of the oscillation shock increases with the free stream Mach numbers for the same stagnation relative humidity. Finally, it is found that for the same shock location, the strength of the oscillating shock facing upstream is stronger than that facing downstream.

  • The design method for transonic turbine blades has been developed based on Wavier-Stokes equations. The present computing process is done on the four separate steps, i.e., determination of the blade profile, generation of the computational grids, cascade flow simulation and analysis of the computed results in the sense of the aerodynamic performance. The blade shapes are designed using the cubic polynomials under the control of the design parameters. Numerical methods for the flow equations are based on Van-Leer's FVS with an upwind TVD scheme on the finite volume. In the present study, numerical simulation has been done to investigate the effects of the design parameters on the aerodynamic peformance of the axial-flow turbine blades. Applications are made to the VKI transonic rotor blades. Computed results are analyzed with respect to four parameters and compared with the experimental data.

  • The shock buffet on a transonic transport aircraft are negative factors that reduce the aerodynamic performance of aircraft. The parametric studies were performed for position of nacelle/pylon to estimate the trend of flow mechanism under the wing that affects shock buffet. To generate external mesh of aircraft configuration that change the position of nacelle, snappyHexMesh provided in OpenFOAM was applied. Implicit density-based solver(ISAAC) was used for flow analysis. The change of nacelle position along horizontal direction dynamically affected the aerodynamic performance of transonic transport aircraft as comparing that of vertical direction. As a result of the parametric study of nacelle/pylon position, it was confirmed that the optimal position of nacelle can be obtained by aerodynamic design.

  • The effects of nonequilibrium condensation on the shock boundary layer interaction over a transonic bump model were investigated experimentally and numerically. An experiment was conducted using a supersonic indraft wind tunnel. A droplet growth equation was incorporated into two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation systems. Computations were carried out using a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme with a second-order fractional time step. Computation compared with the experimental results. Nonequilibirum condensation suppressed the boundary layer separation and the pressure fluctuations due to the shock boundary layer interaction. Especially the nonequilbrium condensation was helpful to suppress the high frequency components of the pressure fluctuations.

  • The powered missiles with very high thrust level can make highly underexpanded jet plume downstream of tile exhaust nozzle exit so that strong interactions between the exhaust plume and a free stream occur around the body at transonic or supersonic speeds. The interactions result in extremely complicated flow phenomena, which consist of plume-induced boundary layer separation, strong shear layers, various shock waves, and interactions among these. The flow characteristics are inherent nonlinear and severe unstable during the flight at its normal speed as well as taking-off and landing. Eventually, the induced boundary layer separation and pitching and yawing moments by the interactions cause undesirable effects ell the static stability and control of a missile.

  • A previously developed pressure based calculation procedure for incompressible flows was modified and applied to transonic and supersonic flows. It uses pressure as a primary variable in preference to density and body fitted coordinate and non-staggered grid system. The discretized momentum equations were rearranged as a system of equations with respect to covariant velocity components. Three different discretization schemes, QUICK hybrid and first order upwind, were used to approximate the convective terms and compared. Present approach was tested far two transonic flow and one supersonic flow problems. Comparison with previous results show that present approach can be used as a solver for compressible flows.

  • The sensitivity of transonic flow past a Whitcomb airfoil to deflections of an aileron is studied at free-stream Mach numbers from 0.81 to 0.86 and vanishing or negative angles of attack. Solutions of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are obtained with a finite-volume solver using the $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model. The numerical study demonstrates the existence of narrow bands of the Mach number and aileron deflection angles that admit abrupt changes of the lift coefficient at small perturbations. In addition, computations reveal free-stream conditions in which the lift coefficient is independent of aileron deflections of up to 5 degrees. The anomalous behavior of the lift is explained by interplay of local supersonic regions on the airfoil. Both stationary and impulse changes of the aileron position are considered.
