  • In a digital communication system, the transmission channel may introduce error into the digital signal being transmitted. It would be useful if a process could be devised so that the error could be removed in order to recover the transmitted digital signal. We design a corrective filter that is inverse filter, which will generate an output signal identical to the input signal. in order for two systems connected in cascade to produce an output which is identical to the input signal, the over-all unit sample response of the cascade connection must be a unit sample function.

  • In this paper, we propose a transceiver structure that can effectively improve BER(Bit Error Rate) performance for TR-UWB (Transmitted Reference Ultra Wide Band) systems based on impulse radio. Unlike coherent UWB systems that are too complex for practical implementation while having good BER performances, the complexity of the TR-UWB systems is quite low since they transmit data with the corresponding reference signals and demodulate the data through correlation using these received signals. However, the BER performance in the conventional TR-UWB systems is affected by SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of the reference templates used in the correlator. To this end, we propose a receiver structure that can effectively improve the BER performance by increasing the SNR of reference templates. Simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme achieves significant BER improvement as compared to the conventional TR-UWB systems.

  • When calculating the user's position using satellite signals, the signals originating from the satellite pass through the ionosphere and troposphere to the user. In particular, the ionosphere delay error that occurs when passing through the ionosphere delays when the signal is transmitted, generating a pseudorange error and position error at a large rate. Therefore, to improve position accuracy, it is essential to correct the ionosphere layer error. In a receiver capable of receiving dual frequency, the ionosphere error can be eliminated through a double difference, but in a single frequency receiver, an ionosphere correction model transmitted from a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) satellite is used. The popularly used Klobuchar model is designed to improve performance globally. As such, it does not perform perfectly in the Korea region. In this paper, the characteristics of the delay in the ionosphere in the Korean region are identified through an analysis of 10 years of data, and an improved ionosphere correction model for the Korean region is presented using the widely employed Klobuchar model. Through the proposed model, vertical position error can be improved by up to 40% relative to the original Klobuchar model in the Korea region.

  • Voice and data are transmitted over a single packetized data communications network which is designed for data communications. The public switched telephone network for voice and the packet data network for data are merging into a single data network to get efficiency and to reduce operational cost. However, integrating voice and data transmission over a single data network is not easy because voice should be transmitted without delay but data should be transmitted without error. Advances in technology begin to overcome basic differences. Several integration methods in voice and data will be examined and reviewed here. Moreover, trends and problems on integration will be also discussed.

  • To increase accurateness and reliability of the evaluation of power tool vibration transmitted to an operator, it is necessary to measure the grip and feed forces during the measurement of hand-transmitted vibration. In the study a system was invented to measure the vibration and the grip and/or feed force, which consists of a measurement handle and a PC with a data acquisition system and the corresponding software. Strain gauges and an accelerometer were mounted on the handle surface for the simultaneous measurement of the forces and the vibration. The program in the system makes it possible to monitor the grip and feed force during the tool operation so that the operator keeps the applying forces within the pre-determined range. Investigating the vibration total values, frequency-weighted root-mean-square accelerations at the handle, obtained in repetition for each power tool with control of the grip and feed force showed more consistency than those measured without force control. By using the system the experimenter can reduce random error of the measured vibration.

  • In digital mobile communications received speech data are affected by burst errors as well as random errors. To overcome these errors we propose a bit-selective forward error correction scheme for the speech data which is sub-band coded at 13 kbps and transmitted over a 16 kbps channel. For a few error correcting codes the signal-to-noise ratio of error-corrected speech is obtained and compared through the simulation of mobile communication channels.

  • This paper proposes an novel method of minimizing Interference which causes data decision error in digital wireless communications. In this method, in order to suppress ISI which is caused by the phase difference between the transmitted and received signal phases, the transmitted and received signals are always kept orthogonal by compensating the transmitted signal for detecting the phase noise and the delay of the received signal was implemented by MOS circuits. To delay the phase of the signal, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) environment was used. The phase and delay of the signal transmitted through AWGN channel were compensated in the modulator of the transmitter and the compensated signal was demodulated using quasi-direct conversion receiver and QPSK demodulator. ISI suppression was achieved by keeping the orthogonality between the compensated transmitted signal and the receive signal. The error probability of data decision was compared. By simulation the proposed system was proved to be effective in minimizing the ISI.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel D-ATR (Differential-Average Transmitted Reference) scheme for UWB (Ultra Wide Band) based on impulse radio. The proposed scheme utilizing differential coding at transceiver, does not cause half loss of data rate unlike the conventional TR (Transmitted Reference) and ATR (Average TR) systems which transmit additional reference signals. In addition, the proposed scheme may provide improved BER (Bit Error Rate) performance by averaging the received reference signals like the conventional ATR. The proposed D-ATR receiver produces the averaged reference template by considering both the detected data bit and the differential coding rule.

  • In the noncoherent methods for UWB-IR (ultra-wideband impulse radio), block coded modulation (BCM) is better than the transmitted reference (TR) systems in terms of the energy efficiency and data rate. However, even BCM suffers from the performance degradation in the presence of strong inter-frame interference and inter symbol interference. We propose the transmitted reference based on the BCM (TR-BCM) which is the hybrid system of TR and BCM. Performance evaluation shows that the performance of TR-BCM is better than that of BCM in the high SNR range.

  • A transcutaneoos information transmission system using transmitted infrared light for an implantable total artificial heart(TAH) an developed and the performance of the system was tested. In an in vitro test, transmittance of the developed system was measured through various thicknesses of pig shins. In an in vivo test, a loopback test using a personal computer was performed to determine the error rate and an experiment using a mock system was taken. In this experiment, within acceptable lateral and vertical displacements, the error rate of at least 3.8E-6 was guaranteed. Monitoring signals from the internal controller(Intel 87C196) of the mock system were successfully transmitted to the external controller(IBM PC) and the operating commands from the external controller were successfully conducted by the mock system. Communication was done in half duplex mode according to RS-232 protocol at the speed of 4800 bps.
