  • This paper presents the measurements and analyses of transmission qualities of the existing urban and toll public switching telephone network (PSTN) for the purllose of opening it to data transmission. In the tests, random noise and impulsive noise occuring on the telephone network are investigated and bit error rate and block error rate representing the transmission qualities on the existing telephone network are measured. We recommend the fastest practical data transmission speed on the network and investigate a possibility of opening the public switching telephone network (PSIN) to the data transmission based on the above measurements.

  • The primary objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of an innovative surface-mount sensor, made of a piezoelectric disc (PZT sensor), as a consistent source for surface wave velocity and transmission measurements in concrete structures. To this end, one concrete slab with lateral dimensions of 1500 by 1500 mm and a thickness of 200 mm was prepared in the laboratory. The concrete slab had a notch-type, surface-breaking crack at its center, with depths increasing from 0 to 100 mm at stepwise intervals of 10 mm. A PZT sensor was attached to the concrete surface and used to generate incident surface waves for surface wave measurements. Two accelerometers were used to measure the surface waves. Signals generated by the PZT sensors show a broad bandwidth with a center frequency around 40 kHz, and very good signal consistency in the frequency range from 0 to 100 kHz. Furthermore, repeatability of the surface wave velocity and transmission measurements is significantly improved compared to that obtained using manual impact sources. In addition, the PZT sensors are demonstrated to be effective for monitoring an actual surface-breaking crack in a concrete beam specimen subjected to various external loadings (compressive and flexural loading with stepwise increases). The findings in this study demonstrate that the surface mount sensor has great potential as a consistent source for surface wave velocity and transmission measurements for automated health monitoring of concrete structures.

  • The aim of this paper is to define the required measurements and processing tools necessary for developing a maintenance approach applied to rotating machines in the presence of multiple faults. The system responses measured were accelerations and transmission errors. Acceleration measurements provide most of the information on bearing conditions, while transmission error measurements provide pertinent information on gear conditions. The measurements were carried out for several operating conditions (loads and speeds). System responses were processed in several analyzing domains (Time, Spectrum, and Cepstrum domains). The approach developed enables the detection and identification of combined faults and it can be applied to other types of rotating machines once the critical elements and their associated faults have been defined.

  • This paper presents the real channel measurements and investigates their statistical characterization in wireless body area network(WBAN). In on-/off body channel, the measurements are performed with some representative human movements for considering human movements. Moreover, three signal transmission schemes with outage constraint are studied for getting total power consumption in each transmission scheme. Using the real channel measurements, between theoretical and realistic simulation are compared. This paper shows that power efficiency is improved through cooperative communication, and how much position of sensor node and human movement affect signal transmission power.

  • With the three dimensional magnetic field measuring system dealt with in this paper, accurate measurements and analyses of ELF magnetic fields in the vicinity of UHV overhead transmission lines and substations have been conducted. For the field measurements multiturn loop-type sensors have been developed with special consideration of taking lower frequency and spatial components without any distortion. So the measuring system has the frequency bandwidth of 8[Hz] to about 53[kHz] and the response sensitivity of $9.88[mV/{\mu}T]$ in average. A brief description of design rules of the measuring system and measurement procedures is given. The actual surrey near 154 and 345[kV] overhead transmission lines and power subststions was carried out and analyzed. It may be inferred from these results that the maximum magnetic field intensities under typical UHV overhead transmission lines do not exceed $20[{\mu}T]$ so that the field measurements satisfy sufficiently all limits or guidelines that various authorized international institutes recommend.

  • In this study, Zigbee Sensor Node to transmit harmful gases CO and $CO_2$ information using wireless communication within the ground and underground structures were developed. Wireless communication protocol was used Zigbee Stack included IEEE 802. 15.4 MAC protocol. For wireless transmission of detected harmful gas signal from ADC of MCU was implemented Zigbee Sensor Node that was developed protocol using Serial-Port-Profile(SPP) here. The proposed Zigbee Sensor Node was verified transmission distance from experiments. Transmission distance was into 90m in experiments. Distance experiments were measured at 10m intervals using sine & pulse wave input signal at indoors. The proposed Route Sensor Node was applied mesh routing protocol. When built up USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network)using Route Sensor Node, transmission distance was not limited. On the experimental results, harmful gas values between direct measurements and USN measurements were consistent. The semiconductor CO sensor and N-DIR $CO_2$ sensor module as a harmful sensor was used. Therefore, the proposed Zigbee Sensor Node was verified about reliability and validity to build USN for transmission of harmful gas information.

  • In spite of increasing public concern about the human exposure to electric and magnetic fields(EMFs), there is little information about the EMF levels in the vicinity of power facilities and of home appliances. To provide such information, a nationwide survey for EMFs near overhead transmission lines has been conducted. The median values of the electric fields and magnetic fields of 153 transmission lines were 0.47 kV/m and 11.6 mG, respectively. The maximum values were 3.16 kV/m and 125 mG. These were low values in comparison with any EMF guidelines or standards of advanced contries. Measurements of the magnetic fields of typical home appliances and daily human exposure records have been also conducted. These magnetic field values were comparable to those of the transmission lines.

  • This paper deals experimently with the difference between the cabins in ship-board and the reverberation chamber in sound transmission loss. Experimental results from the cabins show that there are various flanking transmission losses which deteriorate significantly the performance of the sound transmission loss. They also show that as a representative of the flanking transmission losses, sound leakages between a ceiling and a wall, the joints of the partitions, and the luminant devices play an important role. From the various measurements, it can be is concluded that unless one do not take any treatments on the flanking transmission loss, the field sound transmission loss will be considerably decreased by more than 10 dB, comparable to the sound transmission loss.

  • For the quality control of tablets several parameters have to be checked. The most important one is the content of an active ingredient which has to match a narrow range around the designated content. The only useful measurement mode is transmission which provides information of the complete tablet. A measurement in diffuse reflectance would register only the surface which is useless especially in case of a coated tablet. In this work tablets for a clinical study (placebo/verum studies) with very low concentrations of the active ingredient were measured. The concentration range was 0 to 6 mg with a total weight of the tablets of 105 mg, leading to a highest concentration of the active component of 5.7% by weight. Especially the spectroscopic distinction between the placebo and the low dosage forms with 0.25 and 0.5 mg active agent requires an extraordinarily accurate sampling technique. Using the VECTOR 22/N-T in transmission mode allows the collection of the information from the complete tablets. A quantitative PLS-model with transmission spectra from the tablets described above shows that the active substance can be predicted with a RMSECV (root mean square error of cross validation) of 0.04% absolute for this special application. The results are compared with those of measurements in diffuse reflectance using different accessories.

  • The application of analytical model(Archer et al. 1983) to shielding calculations in diagnostic radiology combined with measurements of the broad beam transmission properties of lead, steel, concrete, and plate glass for x-ray tube potential of 60-140 kVp using an x-ray inverter generator and total initial beam filtration sufficient to provide half-valve layer representative of those found in common practice and required by regulatory agencies. Our transmission measurements and numerical fits to the mathematical model of broad beam transmission(Archer et al. 1983) will assist medical or health physicist faced with the task of designing protective barriers for medical diagnostic x-ray facilities.
