Urban transit or subway stations generally service for a long period of several decades. And, the urban transit or subway is public transportation which lots of people takes every day. During the service time, they are inevitably damaged from environmental corrosion, material aging, fatigue, and the coupling effects with long-term loads and extreme loads. The included damage accumulates and performance degenerates due to the above factors. They would inevitably reduce the resisting capacity of station against the disaster; even they result in collapse with the structural failure under extreme loads. And, if disaster such as earthquake, fire, etc. happens, it causes huge property damage and threatens the human lives. Because of these above reasons, the intelligent health surveillance system should be researched and developed for ensuring the safety of station. In this paper, the research plans of the intelligent health surveillance system of urban transit station are presented. And also, the development or establishment directions of this system are suggested.

The mass transit networks in Korea, such as buses, metro and subway, are co-related and the number of transfer points, in which a lot of pedestrian movement is generated, are rising. The functions of the transfer centers, in which several travel modes cross at a point, have to include convenience and comfort for pedestrians using the transfer centers, and such functions can make transit a more attractive travel option and thus eventually contribute to increases in ridership. However, the guidelines for station layouts and their assessments in transfer stations are not suggested so far. So the pedestrian pattern data (pedestrian walking distances and times, pedestrian approaching distances and times, pedestrian walking paths in the inside of stations) was collected and analyzed. Based on the results of the analysis, the ways to measure the quality of comfort for those who using transfer facilities were suggested using the times that pedestrians consume to transfer from a travel mode to another. The walking time of pedestrians at the inside of stations was also measured by pre-selected pedestrian pathways as the guidelines for station layout assessment in transfer facilities.

Separate transportation card readers that record the amount of transfer volume occurring during movement in-between lines within the metropolitan railway transfer stations do not exist. This research proposes a model to estimate passenger transit movements in transfer stations that adequately reproduces characteristics arising during a transfer trip. The model used in this study assumes that passengers adopt transfer behaviors that minimize their generalized costs during transfer trips. Further, two measures are sought in order to reflect attributes of the metropolitan railway. The first is that similar paths connect origin and destination stations. For this, the M-Similar Paths method is applied to the model to identify the similar paths that arise. The second is that passengers perceive increasing number of transfers as additional transfer costs, which is reflected by means of the Stepwise Transfer Coefficient. Two case studies of metropolitan railway are used to propose measures for analysis of transfer trips. Twenty directional transit phenomena are reproduced for Sindorim railway station. Aggregate directional transit(A), aggregate inter-line transit(B), and B/A are calculated on a percentage basis for 33 metropolitan railway transfer stations, and using this, the functional role of transfers is explored.
Transit-Oriented Development Model, which is recently proposed to activate transit use, is suitable for solving environmental erosion problems of sprawl cities with low urban density. Accordingly this model is inadequate to apply to Muti-Nucleated City with high urban density like Seoul. With this background. this study proposes ways to effectively implement changes from automobile-oriented Seoul to transit-oriented city through comparative analysis of the urban design policy of Station Impact Zone (SIZ) of Seoul and Transit-Oriented Development Policy of Singapore and Tokyo. First, the study suggests that the implementation strategies for Transit-Oriented Development in the job-oriented SIZ and the neighborhood-oriented SIZ should be made separately. In addition, the job-oriented SIZ should be designated as 'Strategic Centers' in Seoul Comprehensive Plan in order to make Transit-Oriented Centers. Lastly, the SIZ should be designated as 'the Empowerment Zones' in order to make the blighted areas around stations viable for redevelopment and new incentive system should be applied to activate setting up transit-transfer facilities.

A new subway, line 9 linking Western and Eastern Seoul began its services for citizens between Gimpo airport and Gangnam area within 30 minutes by express transit service. Seoul Metro Line 9 Corporation plans to operate both local transit service which will stop at every station, and express transit service that will stop at several key stations including junctions. The passengers on line 9 will be able to transfer to lines 2, 3, 5, 8, Bundang and Incheon International Airport. The Line 9 is expected to disperse the demand for line 2, having the most number of subway users, and will provide passengers with less crowded travel. The new line will also help residents in southern Seoul outskirts and Gyeonggi provincial cities including Bundang vicinity, and Gangdong area commuters get better access to Gimpo and incheon Airports. The Corporation expects to transfer 560,000 passengers daily by the subway line 9. Seoul Development Institute conducted network reshuffle study for Seoul Metro system to sort out congestion problem due to its irrational line alignments and inconvenient transfer. Among several candidate plans of network reshuffling, the direct connection of line 9 with line 5 was chosen as a pilot study. The study found that direct connection of the 2 lines is essential for enhancing transit utility and reducing automobile commuters.

It appears that the rapid advance in technology has allowed to broaden the variety of rail systems technology, thereby fostering new business opportunity in rail industry. The direction of rail systems operations is mainly two fold. In one direction, long distance operations between mega cities are pursued with help of high speed trains under development. In the other case, relatively short distance operations for covering intra-city or suburban area are becoming popular. A good example of the latter case is light rail transit (LRT) systems. Due to the short distance operation, it is thus expected that both the development and operation cost for LRT systems be reduced to some extent. The cost reduction desired in there can be gained by scaling down the sizes of both the trains and stations as compared to those of normal rail systems. However, it is not well known how the LRT stations can be scaled down. The objective of this paper is to study on how to slim down the stations (particularly, the functions room) of LRT systems. To achieve the objective, an approach is studied based on a modified method of design structure matrix (DSM). Specifically, using the enhanced DSM method, an integrated architecture is developed for the functions room, in which equipments are housed to perform the functions of electricity, signaling, and communication for LRT stations. The use of the result indicates that the desired reduction can be obtained with the approach taken in the paper.
The north-south rail transit is main communications artery being planned in Shanghai .This article gives us a brief introduction of the design andits technology concerned. It also suggests four criteria for selecting coaches. It is considered possible to build rail transit by utilizing the state railway in the urban districts. Furthmore, its location and the distance between stations are also implied.

This study proposes a new methodology to estimate the traffic capacity of a personal rapid transit(PRT) system. The proposed method comprises three steps. The first step models the guideway network(GN) of PRT as a digraph, where its node and link represent a station and a one-way guideway link between two stations, respectively. Given local vehicle control strategies, the second step formulates the local traffic capacities through the nodes and links of the GN model. The third step estimates the worst-case local traffic demands based on a shortest-path routing algorithm and an empty vehicle allocation algorithm. By comparing the traffic estimates to the local traffic capacities, we can determine the feasibility of the given GN in traffic capacity.
This paper describes a safety program plan of the LRT(Light Rail Transit) project. The SPP is a management document that describes the system safety objectives and how they will achieved so it embodies principles, methods and 1)lattices commonly used in the transit industry. In a Preliminary Hazard Analysis phase, the hazard analysis of collision and derailment is carried out. In this paper we make a definition of hazard that hazard is consist of an inner part(means a reliability) and an outer part(means a fire, flood and earthquake). Also safety principles for infrastructure, stations, electric traction system, railway control of system and train are performed.
The PRT(Personal Rapid Transit) system has been being researched and examined to efficiently provide high quality services to passengers against the traffic congestion of the capital region. With concept that PRT differentiated from GRT(Group Rapid Transit), PRT generally is a tracked vehicle system operating with unmanned. The embedded software of PRT Automated Control system generally is comprised of the central software, stations software and vehicle software. The controllers of these software interface to each other using its RF communication antennas. In this paper, each embedded software of the PRT system should be applied to an incremental and systematic test approach technique in the design and implementation phase, because the reliability and safety of the PRT system should be assured
