  • The closed-loop state and input observer is a pole-placement type observer and estimates unknown state and input variables simultaneously. Pole-placement type observers may have poor transient performance with respect to ill-conditioning factors such as unknown initial estimates, round-off error, etc. For the robust transient performance, the effects of these ill-conditioning factors must be minimized in designing observers. In this paper, the transient performance of the closed-loop state and input observer is investigated quantitatively by considering the error bounds due to ill-conditioning factors. The performance indices are selected from these error bounds and are related to the observer robustness with respect to the ill -conditioning factors. The closed-loop state and input observer with small performance indices is considered as a well-conditioned observer from the transient perspective.

  • An integrated adhesive wear model was proposed to determine the transient wear and steady-state wear of aluminium alloy matrix composites. The transient wear volume was described by an exponential equation, while the steady-state wear was governed by a revised Archard equation, in which both the transient wear volume and transient sliding distance were excluded. A mathematical method was developed to determine both the transient distance and the net steady-state wear coefficient. Experimental wear tests were carried out on three types of commercial A6061 aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with 10%, 15% and 20% alumina particles. More accurate wear coefficient values were obtained with the proposed model. The average standard wear coefficient, as determined by the original Archard equation, was found to be about 51% higher.

  • A mathematical model for the prediction of carbon-dioxide absorption rate during the transient state of rotary type absorber is developed. The rotary type absorber operates using a fast rotating porous structure and clean water. The model for the transient state rotary type absorbers is based on the steady state model of packed tower absorber. The paper manipulates the operating data of an arbitrary quasi-steady state condition of rotary type absorber for the determination of the coefficients involved in the model developed. The prediction accuracy is evaluated from the measured data of rotary type absorber operated under fast transient state. The measured data include the mole fraction of carbon dioxide in mixed gas and the pressure of absorber. The relative error in carbon dioxide prediction is estimated to be 20% at maximum. The model is successfully applied for the prediction of the behavior of a closed cycle diesel engine.

  • This paper suggests an improved technique to establish the modeling regarding steady and transient state on three phase-in one cryostat type HTS(High Temperature Superconducting) cable. The proposed modeling is established using EMTP/ATPDraw and TACS and MODELS provided by that. It has higher accuracy than the conventional method, as the actual HTS cable is modelled. Steady and transient state analysis performed by EMTP/ATPDraw calculate the current of conductor, shield and former, respectively. In case of the transient state modeled quench state occurred by a single line-to-ground fault, current of conductor shield and former are also calculated, respectively. Especially, various fault resistances and angles are considered to improve the reliability during transient state analysis. Analysis results reveal that the proposed technique improves the accuracy of modeling.

  • This paper focuses on an improvement in the transient performance of Boost converters when the load changes abruptly. This is achieved on the basis of the nature trajectory in Boost converters. Three key aspects of the transient performance are analyzed including the storage energy change law in the inductors and capacitors of converters during the transient process, the ideal minimum voltage deviation in the transient process, and the minimum voltage deviation control trajectory. The changing relationship curve between the voltage deviation and the recovery time is depicted through analysis and simulations when the load suddenly increases. In addition, the relationship curve between the current fluctuation and the recovery time is obtained when the load suddenly decreases. Considering the aspects of an increasing and decreasing load, this paper proposes the transient performance synthetic optimized trajectory and control laws. Through simulation and experimental results, the transient performances are compared with the other typical three control methods, and the ability of proposed synthetic trajectory and control law to achieve optimal transient performance is verified.

  • This paper describes the effect of transient state in underground transmission and distribution lines installed together in the same tunnel. Two systems installed in the same tunnel are operated by the common grounding. This paper analyzed that how much one of the two kinds of systems influences the other systems during the transient state by EMTP/ATPDraw. Single line-to-ground fault and lightning surge were selected in transient state condition. These cases were simulated variously according to the variation of common grounding magnitude, fault location and lightning surge magnitude. It is evaluated that the analyzed results will be used for establishment and operating materials of common grounding in the same tunnel.

  • We present a transient queue size distribution for $M/G/m/N$ queue with state dependent arrival rates, using the diffusion process with piecewise constant diffusion parameters, with state space [0, N] and elementary return boundaries at x = 0 and x = N. The model considered here contains not only many basic model but the practical models such as as two-node cyclic queue, repairmen model and overload control in communication system with finite storage buffer. For the accuracy check, we compare the approximation results with the exact and simulation results.

  • The transient characteristics of separately excited d-c motor driven by thyristor d-c chopper is studied in this paper. The armature controlled system is applied. As a result of theoretrical analysis the following conculsions were drawn: (1) For the transient analysis, it is recognized that the state transition analysis is a more general method and powerful tool than the state equation method or signal flow graph method, although it includes iterative matrix calculations. And the system is dealt with a finite width sampled-data system in the state transition analysis. (2) The transient characteristics of the motor angular velocity and its torque to the sampling duration variation are compared with those due to the amplitude variation of d-c chopper voltage as follows. The attenuation rate of the transient characteristics is equal in both cases, but the initial value of the transient characteristics in former case is greater than in latter case. (3) The roots of characteristics equation of the system lie inside the unit circle of the Z-plane. Therefor the system is stable. Further it is found that as the sampling duration is decreased the relative stability is lessened.

  • An experimental study on transient critical heat flux (CHF) under flow coastdown has been performed for the water flow in a non-uniformly heated vertical annulus under low flow and a wide range of pressure conditions. The objectives of this study are to systematically investigate the effect of the flow transient on the CHF and to compare the transient CHF with steady-state CHF The transient CHF experiments have been performed for three kinds of flow transient modes based on the coastdown data of a nuclear power plant reactor coolant pump. At the same inlet subcooling, system pressure and heat flux, the effect of the initial mass flux on the critical mass flux can be negligible. However, the effect of the initial mass flux on the time-to- CHF becomes large as the heat flux decreases. The critical mass flux has the largest value for slow flow reduction rate. There is a pressure effect on the ratio of the transient CHF data to steady-state CHF data. Except under low system pressure conditions, the flow transient CHF was revealed to be conservative compared with the steady-state CHF data. Bowling CHF correlation and thermal hydraulic system code MARS show promising results for the prediction of CHF occurrence .

  • Roll drafting operation causes variations in the linear density of bundles because the bundle flow cannot be controlled completely by roll pairs. Defects occurring in this operation bring about many problems successively in the next processes. In this paper, we attempt to analyze the draft dynamics and the linear density irregularity based on the governing equation of a bundle motion that has been suggested in our previous studies. For analyzing the dynamic characteristics of the roll drafting operation, it is indispensable to investigate a transient state in time domain before the bundle flux reaches a steady state. However, since governing equations of bundle flow consisting of continuity and motion equations turn out to be nonlinear, and coupled between variables, the solutions for a transient state cannot be obtained by an analytical method. Therefore, we use the Finite Difference Method(FDM), particularly, the FTBS(Forward-Time Backward-Space) difference method. Then, the total equations system yields to an algebraic equations system and is solved under given initial and boundary conditions in an iterative fashion. From the simulation results, we confirm that state variables show different behavior in the transient state; e.g., the velocity distribution in the flow field changes more quickly the linear density distribution. During a transient flow in a drafting zone, the output irregularity is influenced differently by the disturbances, e.g., the variation in input bundle thickness, the drafting speed, and the draft ratio.
