  • This paper presents preventive and emergency control measures for on line transient stability (security) enhancement. For insecure operating state, generation rescheduling based on a real power generation shift factor (RPGSF) is proposed as a preventive control measure to bring the system back to secure operating state. For emergency operating state, two emergency control strategies namely generator shedding and load shedding have been developed. The proposed emergency control strategies are based on voltage magnitudes and rotor trajectories data available through Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) installed in the systems. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been investigated on IEEE-39 bus test system under different contingency and fault conditions and application results are presented.

  • The transient state theory of significant liquid structure is applied to nitrous oxide and nitrogen tetroxide. The partition functions for the two liquids are derived according to the transient state theory. The various thermodynamic properties; such as, molar volumes, vapor pressures, entropies of vaporization, and critical point properties agree well with the experimental values.

  • In this paper, a new field weakening algorithm which maximizes the output torque not only in steady state b but also in transient state is proposed. Considering both voltage and current limit of system, analytic solutions f for optimal torque utilization in field weakening region I and region II are obtained. This algorithm finds optimal currents considering dynamic vol떠ge limit based on flux and speed. So the maximum usage of stator v voltage even in transient state results in the maximum torque and fast response time. Simulation and e experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed field weakening scheme.

  • In the speed sensorless control of the induction motor, the machine parameters (especially the secondary resistance R2) have a strong influence to the speed estimation. It is known that the simultaneous estimation of the speed and R2 is impossible in the slip frequency type vector control, because the secondary flux is constant. But the secondary flux is not always constant in the speed transient state. In this paper the R2 estimation in the transient state without adding any additional signal to the stator current is proposed. This algorithm uses the least mean square algorithm and the adaptive algorithm, and it is possible to estimate the R2 exactly. This algorithm is verified by the digital simulations and the experiments.

  • Steady state simulation and dynamic simulation were performed to analyze the operational characteristics of a multi-type refrigeration system, Fully distributed model was adopted to simulate the steady state and transient responses of the system. The main aim was to see the effect of one indoor unit on the other unit. Numerical simulations were carried out for various operation conditions of an indoor unit - secondary fluid inlet temperature, mass flow rate and expansion valve opening. The results showed that the inlet temperature and mass flow rate of the secondary fluid of one indoor unit had minor effect on the operation of the other unit. However, the opening of the expansion valve had significant effect on the performance of the other unit.

  • The Transient State Theory of Significant Liquid Structure has been successfully extended to binary mixture, benzene-cyclohexane system, which gives positive deviation from Raoult's law. The partition function has been derived, and from it various thermodynamic properties, such as total and partial vapor pressures, molar volumes, and excess entropies have been calculated at the temperatures $303.15^{\circ},\;\313.15^{\circ},\;and\;343.15^{\circ}K$. The calculated values agree satisfactorily with the experimental data.

  • In this paper, the belt-pulley mechanical loss is investigated. A bondgraph model for the mechanical loss is developed from the viewpoint of the power flow by assuming that all power losses are attributed to the torque loss. The mechanical loss model consists of transient and steady state part. The coefficients of the power loss model are obtained from the experiments. It is found from the simulations and experiments that the steady state loss depends on the line pressure, input torque and rotational speed while the transient loss depends on the rotational speed, shift speed and the inertial torque.

  • Zone 3 of the distance relay is used to provide the remote back-up protection in case of the failure of the primary protection. However, the risk for mal-operations under stressed conditions such as heavy loading, voltage and transient instability is usually high. Zone 3 is used in combination with the derivatives of the voltage, and current, etc to prevent mal-operations. Sometimes, the impedance characteristics that restrict the tripping area of relay are used to avoid the mal-operations due to load encroachment. This paper presents a novel zone 3 scheme based on combining the steady-state components(i.e. 60Hz) and the transient components(TCs) using a state diagram that visualizes the sequence of studies that emanate from the sequence of events. The simulation results show that the novel zone 3 distance relay elements using the proposed method operates correctly for the various events.

  • To understand the signal fluctuation of a wide-range oxygen sensor installed at the exhaust confluence point, when a misfiring is triggered in a cylinder, the steady state and the transient response characteristics of the sensor to the flow of the misfired gas were investigated quantitatively. It was recognized that the steady state output voltage of the sensor increased higher when it contacted the misfired gas even though the fueling condition was the same as the normal combustion case and this characteristic enabled the application of the wide-range oxygen sensor for the misfire detection. The transient response was compared at different engine speeds and it was found that the response speed increased with the engine speed. The signal fluctuation was also estimated quantitatively, using these steady state and transient response of the sensor, and the estimated signal showed satisfactory correlation with the measurements.

  • The transient power characteristics of a PEM fuel cell stack was experimentally studied using a commercial 1.2kW PEM fuel cell ($Nexa^{TM}$ Power Module, Ballard Power System Inc.). The conditions in PEM fuel cell stack such as temperature and water content change rather slowly because of their large heat capacity and long channel length, which results in long transient time to converge to a steady state. The steady characteristics of the PEM fuel cell module was determined first, followed by the measurement of its transient characteristics upon stepwise and continuous load current changes. During the stepwise current change from 5A to 25A, the output voltage initially decreased below the steady voltage and then increased gradually. Similar behavior was also observed for the stepwise current change from 25A to 5A. This transient behavior is explained with reference to the evolution of the temperature and water content of the PEM fuel cell stack.
