  • This study presents a numerical investigation of the heat and mass transfer kinetics of a fin-tube-type adsorption bed using a two-dimensional numerical model with silica-gel and water as the adsorbent and refrigerant pair. The performance is strongly affected by the heat and mass transfer in the adsorption bed, but the details of the mass transfer kinetics remain unclear. The validity of inter-particle models used to simulate mass-transfer kinetics were examined, such as a constant pressure model and non-constant pressure model, and the valid ranges of the diffusion ratio for each model are proposed. The COP and SCP have been numerically calculated as the performance indexes according to the diffusion ratio. The constant pressure model, which is commonly used in previous research, was found to be valid only in a limited range of diffusion ratio.

  • The present study investigates the convective heat/mass transfer characteristics in wavy ducts of a primary surface heat exchanger. The effects of duct aspect ratio and flow velocity on the heat/mass transfer are investigated. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the corrugated duct sidewall are determined using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The aspect ratios of the wavy duct are 7.3, 4.7 and 1.8 with the corrugation angle of $145\Omega$. The Reynolds numbers, based on the duct hydraulic diameter, vary from 300 to 3,000. The results show that at the low Re(Re $\leq$ 1000) the secondary vortices called Taylor-Gortler vortices perpendicular to the main flow direction are generated due to effect of duct curvature. By these secondary vortices, non-uniform heat/mass transfer coefficients distributions appear. As the aspect ratio decreases, the number of cells formed by secondary vortices are reduced and secondary vortices and comer vortices mix due to decreased aspect ratio at Re$\leq$1000. At Re >1000, the effects of corner vortices become stronger. The average Sh for the aspect ratio of 7.3 and 4.7 are almost same. But at the small aspect ratio of 1.8, the average Sh decreases due to decreased aspect ratio. More pumping power (pressure loss) is required for the larger aspect ratio due to the higher flow instability.

  • The effect of Si content in welding wires on spattering characteristics and droplet transfer phenomena was studied. In MAG welding using 80% Ar-20% $CO_2$ shielding gas, spattering characteristics and droplet transfer phenomena were varied with Si content of wire. With increasing Si content, the spattering ratio and the ratio of large size spatter $(d\geq1.0mm)$ were increased. The increase of Si content in molten metal made surface tension increase due to reduction of oxygen content, which resulted from deoxidizing action of silicon. The increase of surface tension resulted in unstable transfer phenomena and arc instability in both short circuit and spray region. With changing Si content of wire, spattering characteristics and droplet transfer phenomena was directly influenced by the variation of surface tension, compared with the effect of arc stability.

  • Boiling heat transfer characteristic is very important in the various industries such as solar thermal system, power generation, heat exchangers, cooling of high-power electronics components and cooling of nuclear reactors. Therefore, in this study, boiling heat transfer characteristics such as critical heat flux (CHF) and heat transfer coefficient under the pool boiling state were tested using graphene nanofluids. Graphene used in this study, which have the same thermal conductivity but with different sizes. The experimental results showed that the highest the CHF and boiling heat transfer coefficient increase ratio for graphene nanofluids was at the 0.01 vol.%. At the present juncture, the CHF and boiling heat transfer coefficient increase ratio of the small-sized graphene nanofluids was higher than the large-sized graphene nanofluids.

  • This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of dimple surface to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. The response surface based optimization method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The dimple depth-to-dimple print diameter ratio, channel height-to-dimple print diameter ratio, and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weighting factor. full factorial method is used to determine the training points as a mean of design of experiment. The optimum shape shows remarkable performance in comparison with a reference shape.

  • This study concerns the performance of condensation heat transfer in two-phase loop thermosyphons. In the present work, R134a has been used as the working fluid. Liquid fill charge ratio defined by the ratio of working fluid volume to total internal volume of thermosyphon, heat flux and wind speed of condensation have been used as the experimental parameters. The results show that the filling rate of working fluid and heat flux are very important factors for the operation of two-phase loop thermosyphons. The optimum liquid fill charge ratio for the best condensation heat transfer rate was 80%.

  • In this study, the mass transfer behaviors of phenanthrene, anthracene, and pyrene in soil slurry reactor (SSR) using two-liquid phase (TLP) system were investigated. The mass transfer ratio and rate of PAH in the TLP system using light paraffine oil, which has the highest solubility of PAH, were influenced by the amount of light paraffine oil and mixing speed. When the amount of light paraffine oil decreased from 15 % to 2.5 % (v/v), the mass transfer ratio of anthracene decreased significantly compared with that of phenanthrene and pyrene. As mixing speed increased, the initial mass transfer rate of PAH within 1 day was enhanced. However, each final mass transfer ratio of three PAHs after 5 day was similar irrespective of mixing speed.
