  • As a railway train enters a tunnel at high speed, a compression wave is formed in front of the train and propagates along the tunnel. The compression wave subsequently emerges from the exit of the tunnel, which causes an impulsive noise. The impulsive noise is closely related to the pressure gradient of the compression wave propagating the tunnel. In order to investigate the characteristics of the compression waves, in the present study an experiment was made using a shock tube. The results show that the strength of a compression wave decreases with the distance from the tunnel entrance and the nonlinear effect of compression wave appears to be significant if strength of the initial compression wave is greater than 7 kPa. Furthermore if the wave pattern is known, attenuation of the compression wave propagating in a tunnel can be reasonably predicted by a theoretical equation considering viscous action and heat transfer in boundary layer.

  • Liquefied gas vaporizer is a machine to vaporize liquefied gas such as liquid nitrogen($LN_{2}$), liquefied natural gas(LNG), liquid oxygen($LO_{2}$) etc. For the air type vaporizer, the frozen dew is created by temperature drop (below 273 K) on vaporizer surface. The layer of ice make a contractions on vaporizer. The structure analysis on the heat transfer was studied to see the effect of geometric parameters of the vaporizer, which are length 1000 mm of various type vaporizer. Structure analysis result such as temperature variation, thermal stress and thermal strain have high efficiency of heat emission as increase of thermal conductivity. As the result, Frist, With-fin model shows high temperature distribution better than without-fin on the temperature analysis. Second, Without-fin model shows double contractions better then with-fin model under the super low temperature load on the thermal strain analysis. Third, Vaporizer fin can be apply not only heat exchange but also a stiffener of structure. Finally, we confirm that All model vaporizer can be stand for sudden load change because of compressive yield stress shows within 280 MPa on thermal stress analysis.

  • It is difficult to see a therapeutic effect from cardiovascular disease treatment methods in the case of a hardened chronic total occlusion (CTO), owing to the calcification of the deposition materials. However, lesion cells, such as CTOs, can be selectively necrotized without affecting the normal tissue using high-intensity ultrasound focused on one point. In this study, a phantom CTO was necrotized by a high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) energy system, and the acoustic characteristics in the focal region were analyzed. An experimental HIFU device was constructed to discover the appropriate conditions for the necrosis of a phantom CTO. The transfer characteristics of the ultrasound changed in the focal region by the density difference of the phantom CTO. These changes were acoustically analyzed to choose the available frequency band for each density. On-off temperature control in the focal region was applied to prevent rapid temperature rises, which would otherwise affect normal tissue.

  • As research on secondary batteries becomes important, interest in analytical methods to examine the condition of secondary batteries is also increasing. Among these methods, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method is one of the most attractive diagnostic techniques due to its convenience, quickness, accuracy, and low cost. However, since the obtained spectra are complicated signals representing several impedance elements, it is necessary to understand the whole electrochemical environment for a meaningful analysis. Based on the understanding of the whole system, the circuit elements constituting the cell can be obtained through construction of a physically sound circuit model. Therefore, this mini-review will explain how to construct a physically sound circuit model according to the characteristics of the battery cell system and then introduce the relationship between the obtained resistances of the bulk (Rb), charge transfer reaction (Rct), interface layer (RSEI), diffusion process (W) and battery characteristics, such as the state of charge (SOC), temperature, and state of health (SOH).

  • The objective of present research work is to design the heat conductive mould to improve cooling characteristics of the injection mould for a mouse. In order to obtain the high cooling rate of the mould, a heat conductive mould with three different materials was designed. The materials of the base structure, the mid-layer and the molding part of the heat conductive mould were chosen as Cu-Ni alloy (Ampcoloy 940) to improve the heat conductivity of the mould, Ni-Cu alloy (Monel 400) to reduce a thermal stress, injection tool steel (P21), respectively. Through the three-dimensional transient heat transfer analysis and the thermal stress analysis, the effects of the geometrical arrangement of each material on the cooling characteristics and the thermal stress distribution were examined. From the results of the analyses, a proper design of the thermal conductive mould was obtained.

  • The microchannel flow in miniature TCDs (thermal conductivity detectors) is investigated numerically. The solutions based on the boundary layer approximation are not very accurate in the region of the duct inlet for low Reynolds numbers. In this study, two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are considered to analyze the gas flow in a miniature TCD. Effects of channel size, inlet and boundary conditions on the heat transfer rate are examined. When the gas stream is not preheated, the distances for a miniature TCD to reach the conduction-dominant region for duct flow are found to be approximately two and three times the thermal entry length for duct flow with constant properties, respectively, leer constant wall temperature and constant wall heat flux boundary conditions. If the gas temperature at the channel inlet is close to the mean gas temperature in the conduction-dominant region, the entrance region is much shorter compared to other cases considered in this study.

  • This work describes the low-resolution spectral modeling of the water vapor, carbon dioxide and their mixtures by applying the weighted-sum-of-gray-gas-gases model (WSGGM) to each narrow band. Proper modeling scheme of gray gas absorption coefficients vs temperature relation is suggested. Comparison between the modeled emissivity calculated from this relation and the 'true' emissivity obtained from the high temperature statistical narrow band parameters is made for a few typical narrow bands. Low resolution spectral intensities from one-dimensional layers are also obtained and examined for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temperature profiles using the obtained WSGGM's with several gray gases. The results are compared with the narrow band spectral intensities obtained by a narrow band model-based code with Curtis-Godson approximation. Good agreement is found between them. Data bases including optimized modeling parameters and total and low-resolution spectral weighting factors are developed for water vapor, carbon dioxide and their mixtures. This model and obtained data bases, available from the authors' Internet site, can be appropriately applied to any radiative transfer equation solver.

  • The inhibition ability of N,N-bis(2,4-dihydroxyhydroxybenzaldehyde)-1,3-Propandiimine (DHBP) as a schiff base against the corrosion of API-5L-X65 steel in 1 M HCl solution was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization and scanning electron microscopy. Electrochemical impedance studies indicated that DHBP inhibited corrosion by blocking the active corrosion sites. The inhibition efficiency increased with increasing inhibitor concentrations. EIS data was analysed to equivalent circuit model and showed that the charge transfer resistance of steel increased with increasing inhibitor concentration whilst the double layer capacitance decreased. The adsorption of this compound obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Gibbs free energy of adsorption was calculated and indicated that adsorption occurred through physical and spontaneous process. The corrosion inhibition mechanism was studied by potential of zero charge. Polarization studies indicated that DHBP retards both the cathodic and anodic reactions through adsorption on steel surface. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the steel surface with and without inhibitor.

  • A fluorine-doped diamond-like carbon (F-DLC) stamp which has high contact angle, high UV-transmittance and sufficient hardness, was fabricated using the following direct etching method: F-DLC is deposited on a quartz substrate using DC and RF magnetron sputtering, PMMA is spin coated and patterned using e-beam lithography and finally, O2 plasma etching is performed to transfer the line patterns having 100 nm line width, 100 nm line space and 70 nm line depth on F-DLC. The optimum fluorine concentration was determined after performing several pre-experiments. The stamp was applied successfully to UV-NIL without being coated with an anti-adhesion layer.

  • We report a new direct patterning method, called liquid bridge-mediated nanotransfer molding (LB-nTM), for the formation of two- or three-dimensional structures with feature sizes between tens of nanometers and tens of micron over large areas. LB-nTM is based on the direct transfer of various materials from a mold to a substrate via a liquid bridge between them. This procedure can be adopted for automated direct printing machines that generate patterns of functional materials with a wide range of feature sizes on diverse substrates. Arrays of TIPS-PEN TFTs were fabricated on 4" polyethersulfone (PES) substrates by LB-nTM using PDMS molds. An inverted staggered structure was employed in the TFT device fabrication. A 150 nm-thick indium-tin oxide (ITO) gate electrode and a 200 nm-thick SiO2dielectric layer were formed on a PES substrate by sputter deposition. An array of TIPS-PEN patterns (thickness: 60 nm) as active channel layers was fabricated on the substrate by LB-nTM. The nominal channel length of the TIPS-PEN TFT was 10 mm, while the channel width was 135 mm. Finally, the source and drain electrodes of 200 nm-thick Ag were defined on the substrate by LB-nTM. The TIPS-PEN TFTs can endure strenuous bending and are also transparent in the visible range, and therefore potentially useful for flexible and invisible electronics.
