  • Attaching a piezoelectric transducer to a vibrating structure, and shunting it with an electric circuit, gives rise to different passive, semi-passive, and semi-active control techniques. This paper attempts to review the research related to structural vibration control, via passive, semi-passive, and semi-active control methods. First, the existing electromechanical modeling is reviewed, along with the modeling methods. These range from lumped parameters, to distributed parameters modeling of piezostructural systems shunted by electrical networks. Vibration control laws are then discussed, covering passive, semi-passive, and semi-active control techniques, which are classified according to whether external power is supplied to the piezoelectric transducers, or not. Emphasis is placed on recent articles covering semi-passive and semi-active control techniques, based upon switched shunt circuits. This review provides the necessary background material for researchers interested in the growing field of vibration damping and control, via shunted piezostructural systems.

  • In this research, we have analyzed the trend of radiation pattern variation in relation to the change of design variables such as source interval and source number for conformal array transducers arranged in equi-angle, equi-interval, and geodesic dome forms. Through statistical multiple regression analysis of the results, we derived functional forms of the side lobe level and the beamwidth in terms of the design variables. Futhermore, the structure of the array transducer was optimized to achieve the smallest side lobe level while satisfying the requirements on beam width by the GA (genetic algorithm) method. Based on the optimized results, we have determined the equi-interval form as the optimal array geometry among the three conformal array geometries.

  • The IEEE 1451.4 standards defines an architectural model for interfacing smart transducers for sensors & actuators. This standard allows analogue transducers to communicate their identification and calibration data in a digital format. A digital format is called TEDS(transducer electronic data sheet). However, the standard template of IEEE 1451.4 TEDS do not supports gas sensors to use in electronic nose system such as may sensors. In this paper, a solution to standardize sensors for electronic nose systems is presented.

  • Most of conventional ultrasonic transducers are constructed to generate either longitudinal or shear waves, but not both of them. We investigated the mechanism of dual mode transducers that generates both of the longitudinal and shear waves simultaneously with a single PZT element. A piezoelectric ceramic PZT has the hexagonal 6mm crystal symmetry, after poling. We studied the performance of a PZT element as a function of its rotation angle so that its efficiency is optimized to excite the two waves equally strongly. The results are verified by checking the impedance variation of the element with Finite Element Methods, and checking the wave form by pulse-echo test simulation. Validity of the theoretical calculation is verified through experiments.

  • Force measuring devices should be calibrated to guarantee their test results. In order to establish the force standards in Korea, deadweight machines of 5 kN, 20 kN, 100 kN and 500 kN capacity and a hydraulic force standard machine of 2 MN capacity were installed at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science(KRISS). As heavy industries in Korea have been developed, we should measure large forces over 2 MN capacity precisely in industries. We developed a 10 MN force standard machine with built-in force transducers which is more compact and cheaper than hydraulic force standard machines which have been widely used as large force standards in most national metrology laboratories. Test results reveal that the relative expanded uncertainty of the force machine is less than 4.1 $\times$ 10-4 in the range of 1 MN-4.5 MN.

  • Since MFC(macro-fiber composite) transducer has been developed, many researchers have tried to apply this transducer on SHM(structural health monitoring), because it is so flexible and durable that it can be easily embedded to various kinds of structures. The objective of this paper is to figure out the benefits and feasibility of applying MFC transducers to guided wave technique. For this, we have experimentally tested the performance of MFC patches as transmitter and sensors for excitation and reception of guided waves on the thin aluminum alloy plate. In order to enhance the signal accuracy, we applied the FIR filter for noise reduction as well as used STFT(short-time Fourier transform) algorithm to image the guided wave characteristics clearly. From the results, the guided wave generated based on MFC showed good agreement with its theoretical dispersion curves. Moreover, the ultrasonic Lamb wave techniques based on MFC patches in pitch-catch manner was tested for detection of surface notch defects of which depths are 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of the aluminum plate thickness. Results showed that the notch was detectable well when the notch depth was 10% of the thickness or greater.

  • The magnetostrictive characteristics of three different forms of magnetostrictive transducers made of 2605SC and 2826MB metallic glasses were measured. In both cases, the two-end-point bonding configuration exhibited the best characteristics. With the two-end-point bonding we measured the effective magnetostrictive coefficient $C_{eff}$ of $1.2{\times}^{-5}Oe^{-2}$, the saturation magnetostriction ${\lambda}_s$ of $7.4{\times}10^{-4}$ and the minimum detectable magnetic field $H_{min}$ of $1.6{\times}10^{-7}Oe$/ √Hz for the 2605SC metallic glass ribbon. Also for the 2826MB metallic glass ribbon, Ceff and ${\lambda}_s$ were $7.6{\times}10^{-6}Oe^{-2}$ and $3.4{\times}10^{-4}$ respectively.

  • This paper investigates the design of a perfect point load actuator based on flat triangular piezoelectric patches. Applying a difference of electric potential between the electrodes of a triangular patch leads to point loads at the tips and distributed moments along the edges of the electrodes. The previously derived analytical expressions of these forces show that they depend on two factors: the width over height (b/l) ratio of the triangle, and the ratio of the in-plane piezoelectric properties ($e_{31}/e_{32}$) of the active layer of the piezoelectric patch. In this paper, it is shown that by a proper choice of b/l and of the piezoelectric properties, the moments can be cancelled, so that if one side of the triangle is clamped, a perfect point load actuation can be achieved. This requires $e_{31}/e_{32}$ to be negative, which imposes the use of interdigitated electrodes instead of continuous ones. The design of two transducers with interdigitated electrodes for perfect point load actuation on a clamped plate is verified with finite element calculations. The first design is based on a full piezoelectric ceramic patch and shows superior actuation performance than the second design based on a piezocomposite patch with a volume fraction of fibres of 86%. The results show that both designs lead to perfect point load actuation while the use of an isotropic PZT patch with continuous electrodes gives significantly different results.

  • Conventional ultrasonic thickness measurement is to be considered as the assumption that the ultrasonic velocity is known. In actual applications the velocity is often not well known and access is often limited to one side. This paper aims at determining the ultrasonic velocity and thickness of plates with parallel or wedged surfaces using contact measurements made on one surface only. For wedged plates the thickness at one point and the wedge angle are determined. Equations are used for determining the ultrasonic velocity, thickness and wedge angle of the plate based on the times-of-flight measured by two contact transducers coupled to one surface. The time-of-flight of the obliquely reflected longitudinal wave echo was measured as a function of the separation between the two transducers. In addition, a simulation was made for comparing the experimental data and a FEM image. Experiments and simulations were performed on flat and wedged plates of aluminium materials; the calculated results for the unknown quantities are generally agreed with them to some degree.

  • To set up the arrays system of FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating) Hydrophone sensor and realize the multi-point signal detection for the wide scope underwater, using WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) method and Passive band-pass filter system, underwater acoustic signal detection of the newly designed two FBG Transducers is successfully experimented. As a result of the experiment, it was possible each signal with different frequent signals is detected for the multi-point up to 1.3KHz in underwater. We can, therefore, prove the possibility on the system design of Hydrophone sensor arrays, using the newly made FBG Transducers.
