A Study on the Traffic Flow and Navigational Characteristics for the Ship's Routing of Po-hang Port (포항항 항로지정을 위한 주요 통항로 및 통항 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The traffic volume will be increased and the traffic of larger vessel could be multiplied in the Pohang port by the opening of the Young-il new port in 2006. Unfortunately, however, potential danger factors to the safe navigation, disordered navigation and traffic congestion are still existing in the Pohang port and approaching waters. This paper describes the status of marine traffic flow and navigational characteristics based on the marine traffic survey using the exclusive software, and the results of marine traffic survey classify into ship's type, size and track history of passing ships through the statistical methods. Finally the examinations of marine traffic route, traffic flow and navigational characteristics are discussed. These results can be used for the best design of ship's routing at the Pohang waters.

Evaluation of Mobility and Safety of Operating an Overlap Phase on a Shared-Left-Turn Lane Using a Microscopic Traffic Simulation Model (미시교통시뮬레이션모형을 이용한 공용 좌회전 차로의 중첩현시운영의 이동성과 안전성 평가 연구)

  • Government agencies including the national police agency have executed diverse efforts including continuous improvements of traffic facilities and operation methods, education, enforcements in order to improve traffic operation systems; nevertheless there have been continuous criticisms on irrationality in traffic signal and road facility operation. One of the reasons may be the lack of systematic preliminary evaluations on various alternatives. However, there was no appropriate tool to evaluate the mobility and safety of thus alternatives in a systematic way. Therefore, this study proposes the systematic use of microscopic traffic simulation models as a comprehensive evaluation tool. In addition, this study verified the potential of using a microscopic traffic simulation model using the case of operating an overlap phase on a shared-left-turn lane through a systematic way where the evaluation was conducted through data collection, building networks, calibrating microscopic simulation models, producing performance measures, evaluating mobility and safety, and so on. As a result, the operation of overlap phase on a shared-left-turn lane showed no big difference from other operation scenarios such as leading left-turn on exclusive left turn lane in terms of mobility. However the operation of overlap phase on a shared-left-turn lane decreased safety by increasing potential conflicts.

  • The national subway went under construction in 1971, and after three years of endeavor, Seoul subway line number one opened for traffic in 1974. Line number two went under construction in 1978 and it opened for traffic in 1984. With the use of safety operation for more than 20 years, the life cycle nearly came to an end. Therefore the improvements for the safety operation are unavoidable. The total system should not be affected when the new and conventional systems are overlapped, the system operation is in the initial stage, and it confronts the situation of abnormal operation. However, there is a total lack of experience in construction and improvement for the trains that are in the use of large transport and density headway. In this paper, we propose an improvement method of the subway signalling system using ATO (Automatic Train Operation control scheme) to which the latest Digital ATC is applied, and examine the first application model of ATO system.

  • U-Turn offers convenience to drivers. U-Turn increases efficiency of traffic flow. But Standard of U-Turn is not clear. It caused many problems of traffic flow and traffic safety. This study estimate length between U-Turn location with front intersection based on stopping sight distance and left-turn vehicle's queue length. Variables are used traffic volume and operation speed. This study Analysis of U-Turn vehicle's behaviors and classification of conflict form by investigation. U-Turn length estimating based on relationship analysis between conflict with U-Turn length. Variables are used lane changing angles and operation speed. This study estimates length between U-Turn location with back intersection based on gap acceptance theory. Variables are used traffic volume, operation speed and lane changing angles. So, U-Turn location and length estimated considering traffic flow and traffic safety.

Traffic Accident Reduction Effects of the All-Red Clearance Interval (ARCI) Operation (전적색신호시간 운영에 따른 교통사고 감소효과)

  • This study deals with the relationships between signal operation and traffic accident of signalized intersections. The objective of this study is to analyze the traffic accident reduction effects on the operation of all-red clearance interval (ARCI). This study gives particular attentions to evaluating the traffic accident reduction effects of ARCI at 37 signalized intersections in Cheongju using before-after evaluation with comparison group. The main results are as follows. First, the number of traffic accidents, fatalities and injuries has changed before operating ARCI and thereafter. Second, the result of before-and-after evaluation with comparison group showed that the number of accidents was reduced by 20.0% and that the number of fatalities and injuries was reduced by 28.0%. Finally, reduction effects from operating ARCI were evaluated to be 6.0~35.0% in the number of accidents and 18.0~37.0% in the number of fatalities and injuries.

Drivers' Satisfaction of Protected/Permitted Left Turn(PPLT) Signal Operation (보호/비보호 좌회전 신호운영(PPLT) 만족도 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of drivers' satisfaction over protected and permissive left-turn (PPLT) traffic signal operation. A structural equation model was established for analyzing the effectiveness of various drivers' factors (e.g., personal characteristics, driving attitude, expectation to PPLT, etc.) on the PPLT preference based on questionnaire survey. As a result, the analysis is satisfied with the critical values, such as Q value, RMR, GIF, AGIF, and NFI. The study reveals that PPLT preference increases in case of driver who is male with long social carrier related to transportation affaire and long driving experience without traffic accident involvement. Moreover, PPLT preference increases as the expectation of PPLT to improvement of traffic safety, traffic operation, and traffic environment increases. Therefore, it is recommended that the PPLT should be preferentially operated in urban area of less traffic accidents and the promotion of PPLT be actively conducted for positive effectiveness.

Stochastic Traffic Congestion Evaluation of Korean Highway Traffic Information System with Structural Changes

  • The stochastic phenomena of traffic network condition, such as traffic speed and density, are affected not only by exogenous traffic control but also by endogenous changes in service time during congestion. In this paper, we propose a mixed M/G/1 queuing model by introducing a condition-varying parameter of traffic congestion to reflect structural changes in the traffic network. We also develop congestion indices to evaluate network efficiency in terms of traffic flow and economic cost in traffic operating system using structure-changing queuing model, and perform scenario analysis according to various traffic network improvement policies. Empirical analysis using Korean highway traffic operating system shows that our suggested model better captures structural changes in the traffic queue. The scenario analysis also shows that occasional reversible lane operation during peak times can be more efficient and feasible than regular lane extension in Korea.

Analysis of the Effects of Traffic Signal Operation Methods (대전시 신호운영체계 개편에 따른 효과분석)

  • Delay reduction of vehicles at the intersection is highly dependent on the signal operation method. Most previous traffic operations have focused on minimizing delay by adjust traffic offset. However, these methods have limitation in solving traffic problem if the volume reaches or exceeds the capacity. In this paper, it was analyzed that the effectiveness of various signal operation methods such as left-turn prohibition, and using protected mixed with permitted left turn using the traffic data from Daejeon city. In case of the left-turn prohibition of a intersection, the control delay reduced from 54.2 seconds to 22.7 seconds and especially, the delay of the southbound was drastically reduced. In addition, the delay was highly reduced from 27.0 seconds to 12.1 seconds when the operation system was changed to use protected mixed with permitted left turn.

Rule-based Capture algorithm for an Real-time Traffic Monitoring of BcN (BcN의 실시간 트래픽 모니터링을 위한 RBC(Rule-based Capture) 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we propose a new real-time traffic monitoring scheme for the BcN, the RBC algorithm and investigate its operation. We implemented RBC algorithm and constructed the testbed and we confirmed the performance for this. The simulation result shows that traffic monitoring log size is reduced remarkably by using the RBC. An operation hour is reduced and a feedback support of Real-time is possible also. Consequently, RBC algorithm confirmed we are fit for Real-time TE plan for BcN.

A Study on the Estimation of Design Service Traffic Volume for Turbo Roundabout (국내 나선형 교차로 도입을 위한 적정교통량 산정연구)

  • It is generally known that a two-lane roundabout has some problems in safety such as increasing conflicts, typically merging and diverging conflicts and conflicts between entering traffic and exiting as well as turning traffic. To solve these problems, a turbo-roundabout had been developed and has successfully brought safer and more efficient operation in other countries. In this study, micro simulations using VISSIM were conducted to investigate the maximum value of service traffic volume. It was found that operation of turbo-roundabouts was influenced by traffic volume for each turning traffic, and the maximum values of traffic volume were values between 2,400 and 2,800 vehicles per hour as rates of traffic volume for each turning traffic. Typically, turbo-roundabouts have limited to operate in conditions with more than 30% for left-turning traffic volume.
