The purposes of this study are to analyze the characteristics and to develop the models of traffic accidents. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular attentions to developing the models(multiple linear, poisson and negative binomial regression) using the data of Cheongju and Cheongwon signalized intersections. The main results analyzed are as follows. First, the accident characteristics of rural area were defined by factor. Second, 4 accident models which are all statistically significant were developed. Finally, such the variables as $X_2$ and $X_{11}$ were evaluated to be specific variables which reflect the characteristics of rural area.

The fatalities of pedestrian account for about 40.0% of all fatalities in Korea 2005. Vehicle-Pedestrian accident generates trajectory of pedestrian. In pedestrian involved accident, the most important data to inspect accident is throw distance of pedestrian. The throw distance of pedestrian can be influenced by many variables. The variables that influence trajectory of pedestrian can be classified into vehicular factors, pedestrian factors, and road factors. Vehicular factors are the frontal shape of vehicle, impact speed of vehicle, the offset of impact point. Many studies have been done about the relation between impact speed and throw distance of pedestrian. But the influence of the offset of impact point was neglected. The influence of the offset of impact point was analyzed by Working Model, and the trajectory of pedestrian, dynamic characteristics of multi-body were analyzed by PC-CRASH, a kinetic analysis program for a traffic accident. Based on the results, the increase of offset reduced the throw distance of pedestrian. However box type vehicle just like bus, the offset of impact point did not influence the throw distance of pedestrian considerably.
PURPOSES : The intents of the study are to identify the accident factors and to demonstrate the potentials of tobit model as a tool to study the number of accidents on arterial roads segments. METHODS : This paper uses a tobit regression as a methodology to analyze the factors affecting the number of accidents. In pursuing the above goal, this study gives particular attentions to analyzing the data of 2,446 accidents (1,610 in major arterial roads and 836 in minor arterial roads) occurred on arterial roads in 2007 to 2010. RESULTS : First, 3 accident models which were classified by total arterial roads, major arterial roads and minor arterial roads, and were all statistically significant were developed. Second, the exclusive right-turn lane as common variable, and the number of accident, traffic volume, number of lanes, link length, rate of median, number of entrances, number of pedestrian crossings, number of curves, number of bus stops and exclusive left-turn as specific variables of the models were selected. Finally, the paired sample t-test could not be rejected the null hypotheses of three types of models. CONCLUSIONS : Using data from vehicle accidents on arterial roads, the estimation results show that many factors related to roadway geometrics and traffic characteristics significantly affect to the number of accidents.

PURPOSES: According to accident statistics for road built in 2004, the ratio of accidents on frozen roads to normal roads is 0.9%, whereas the fatality ratio is 2.7%. The risk of accidents on frozen roads is very high. Measures taken every year to prevent traffic accidents of frozen roads in the winter season are still insufficient. Additionally, measures have been established mainly on rural roads. Therefore, for urban roads, analyses and measures to prevent accidents are lacking. In this study, data on accidents on frozen roads was used to search for the causes behind these accidents and measures to reduce accidents have been recommended. METHODS: In this study, collected data from the TAMS (Traffic Accident Management System), which were collected by the Seoul National Police Agency was used. The data were divided into vehicle, people, and condition of road. The analytical model used here was the Logistic Regression Model, which is frequently used for traffic safety and accident analysis. This study uses the odds ratio analysis to search for variables related to frozen road traffic accidents in each category. A total of 18 out of 47 variables were found to be the causes of accidents. RESULTS: From the results of the comparative analysis of 18 variables, the category of the condition of the road was found to be the most critical. Contrary to expectations, more accidents occurred in clear weather than in other conditions. Accidents on bridges occurred frequently, and its odds ratio was the highest compared with other road types. When BPT is operated, the probability of accidents on frozen roads is lower than in general conditions, and accidents occurred frequently on roads with less than four lanes. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the results of this study, suggestions for reducing the risk of future domestic road accidents in freezing conditions are indicated as follows. First, it is necessary to perform a technical review of the urban road traffic accidents caused by frozen roads. Second, it is necessary to establish criteria for the study of the road environment based on the major causes of road accidents on frozen roads. Third, improvements in urban road environmental factors should be made.
Even though automakers have actively been conducting studies on autonomous navigation thanks to the development and application of wireless Internet technology, the traffic accident has been kept unsolved. The causes of the accident are drowsy driving, a mistake of a driver, environmental factors, and a wrong road structure; Driving manner and characteristics of a driver among the causes are significantly influential for the accident. In this paper, a study to measure characteristics of zigzag driving that can be seen before an occurrence of an accident regarding traffic accidents that can be incurred while driving manually or autonomously was conducted. While existing studies measured zigzag driving based on characteristics of the change of lateral angular velocity by imaging techniques or driving manner on the first and second lane, this study proceeded to measure zigzag driving by setting a lateral moving distance and a critical value range by utilizing the value of a sensor.
It's declining the number of deaths in total traffic accidents, but the death of elder drivers has increasing than younger drivers. So this paper wish to prevent the traffic accident of the elder drivers using driving simulator. It can help to make better policies and planning for elder drivers.
Generally, it is well known that driving in tunnel imposes large burden to driver because of spatial constraint, limited visual field and so on. And such a burden of driver result in high accident occurrence. In this reason, studies dealing with features of driving and traffic flow in tunnel have been performed. However, information about characteristics of drivers and traffic in a very long tunnel is not accumulated yet. The purpose of this study is to identify the relations between tunnel length and burden of driver, driving patterns, traffic flow characteristics using the tunnel simulator that realizing various tunnel situations. For this, the tunnel simulation program was developed along 11km-length section. And biological data of 10 subjects gained from driving condition in simulation program was analyzed and compared with the result of real driving condition.
The purpose of this study is to develop a traffic characteristic analysis, a correlation analysis with the variables of traffic characteristics, and accident estimation models while recognizing the seriousness of the traffic accidents. The analyses deal with the 181 4-legged signalized intersections that accounted for 1,183 out of 3,115 accidents in Cheongju in 2004. After measuring ADT, intersection area, average lane width, elevation, and other items as independent variables and the number of traffic accidents, the traffic accident rate (accidents per million entering vehicles) and equivalent property damage only (EPDO) figures as dependent variables which are estimated as influencing signalized intersection accidents, the estimation models are developed using correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. In the analysis of the number of traffic accidents, the model indicates an $R^2$ of 0.612, and five independent variables are taken as significant factors. In the analysis of traffic accident rates, the model indicates an $R^2$ of 0.304 and five significant factors, including intersection area and ADT. Also, for the analysis or the EPDO numbers, which coincides with understanding the seriousness of the traffic accidents and the traffic characteristic analysis, the model indicates an $R^2$ of 0.559, and four independent variables (ADT, main street average lane width, elevation, and speed limit) as significant factors.
This study divided the large-scale traffic accident locations into its own characteristics by using Cluster Analysis. Also, Quantification II and Classification and Regression Tree methods were used enabling evaluation for the amount of affecting influence by the crash type. After these analyses, we tested the fitness of the results and suggested the simplification of the quantification index. With the results from the discussed procedure, obvious differences were observed by groups according to the characteristics of crash type from the Discrimination and Classification analysis of divided four groups. Thus, measures and supplementary measures for the traffic accidents could be suggested in groups systematically. However, a lot of missing values in variables caused a huge loss of data and made this study difficult for more detailed analysis, With this difficulty. recording mandatory log files with a standardized format is also recommended to Prevent this Problem in advance.
The previous studies on analyzing the effects of traffic safety policies are very limited. Implementing traffic safety policies in view of their own urban traffic characteristics would be fairly desirable to handle properly the traffic safety problems. The relationships between traffic accidents and traffic safety policies have been researched by classifying the eighty one cities in Korea into four groups in terms of the size of the city population. Statistical analysis have been conducted for traffic accidents data and traffic safety policies, respectively. In order to mearsure the effectiveness of the traffic policies in the real world, regression models have been developed by handling the accident data and policy data. As a result of analysing the data, the traffic policies have showed different effects according to the size of the cities. While budget investment policies had provided enormous influences to reduce traffic accidents in the big cities more than a half million polulation, traffic enforcement and traffic education have been so efficient to control traffic accident problems in the smaller cities less than a half million poluation.
