Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) area presents a complex traffic pattern due to ships entering or leaving the port to utilize port facilities, as well as ships passing through the coastal area. To ensure safe and efficient management of maritime traffic, VTS operators continuously monitor and control vessels in real time. However, during periods of high traffic congestion, the workload of VTS operators increases, which can result in delayed or inadequate VTS services. Therefore, it would be beneficial to predict traffic congestion and congested areas to enable more efficient traffic control. Currently, such prediction relies on the experience of VTS operators. In this paper, we defined vessel traffic congestion from the perspective of a VTS operator. We proposed a method to generate traffic networks using historical navigational data and predict traffic congestion and congested areas. Experiments were performed to compare prediction results with real maritime data (Daesan port VTS) and examine whether the proposed method could support VTS operators.
The issue of supporting TCP traffic over ATM networks is currently one of the most important issues in the field of data networks. One important part of this issue is congestion control. In general, congestion control uses method such as packet drop to relieve network resource when the network is congested so as to maintain high throughput and low delay. In addition, congestion control is required to ensure fair sharing of resources among all users during congestion. In this paper we propose a new congestion control method using WRED & per-VC accounting mechanism. This packet discard scheme is proposed with the goal to provide both good performance in terms of throughput and fairness in terms of bandwidth exploitation of the output link among all virtual circuits.

As the multimedia application traffic takes more portion in the internet traffic, it is necessary to control the network congestion through the congestion control protocol. In addition, the QoS-enabled networks such as DiffServ become an indispensable technology when running the multimedia applications. However, the previously proposed end-to-end congestion control algorithms take the round trip time to react the network congestion. Thus, as the RTT becomes larger, the reaction against the congestion gets delayed further, while the network congestion gets worse. In addition the performance of end-to-end congestion control algorithm is degraded if the QoS-enabled network runs the congestion control mechanism in the network level without any coordination between them. In this paper, we propose the early rate adaptation protocol for the DiffServ network which effectively linke the congestion control algorithm at the host and the congestion mechanism in the network together. By taking advantage of early congestion notification from the network it is possible to react the network congestion more quickly and effectively.
In this paper, a feedforward-plus-feedback control scheme is presented to prevent congestion in store-and-forward packet switching networks. The control scheme consists of two algorithms. Specifically, the input traffic adjustment algorithm employs a fairness policy such that the transmission rate of the input traffic is proportional to its offered rate. The control signal computation algorithms to ensure stability of the overall system in the robust sense and to ensure the desired transient behavior in the adaptive, with respect to variations of input traffic, are designed.
Measurement of network traffic have shown that the self-similarity is a ubiquitous phenomenon spanning across diverse network environments. In previous work, we have explored the feasibility of exploiting the long-range correlation structure in a self-similar traffic for the congestion control. We have advanced the framework of the multiple time scale congestion control and showed its effectiveness at enhancing performance for the rate-based feedback control. Our contribution is threefold. First, we define a modular extension of the TCP-a function called with a simple interface-that applies to various flavours of the TCP-e.g., Tahoe, Reno, Vegas and show that it significantly improves performance. Second, we show that a multiple time scale TCP endows the underlying feedback control with proactivity by bridging the uncertainty gap associated with reactive controls which is exacerbated by the high delay-bandwidth product in broadband wide area networks. Third, we investigate the influence of the three traffic control dimensions-tracking ability, connection duration, and fairness-on performance.

Differentiated services (DiffServ) has been widely accepted as the service model to adopt for providing quality-ofservice (QoS) over the next-generation IP networks. There is a growing need to support QoS in mobile ad hoc networks. Supporting DiffServ in mobile ad hoc networks, however, is very difficult because of the dynamic nature of mobile ad hoc networks, which causes network congestion. The network congestion induces long transfer packet delay and low throughput which make it very difficult to support QoS in mobile ad hoc networks. We propose DiffServ module to support differentiated service in mobile ad hoc networks through congestion control. Our DiffServ module uses the periodical rate control for real time traffic and also uses the best effort bandwidth concession when network congestion occurs. Network congestion is detected by measuring the packet transfer delay or bandwidth threshold of real time traffic. We evaluate our mechanism via a simulation study. Simulation results show our mechanism may offer a low and stable delay and a stable throughput for real time traffic in mobile ad hoc networks.
Large-scale wireless sensor networks are constructed by using a large number of sensor nodes that are non-uniformly deployed over a wide area. As a result, the data collected by the sensor nodes are similar to that from one another since a high density of the sensor nodes may cause an overlap. As a result of the characteristics of the traffic, data is collected from a plurality of sensor nodes by a sink node, and when the sensor nodes transmit their collected data to the sink node, the sensor nodes around the sink node have a higher amount of traffic than the sensor nodes far away from the sink node. Thus, the former sensor encounter bottlenecks due to traffic congestion and have an energy hole problem more often than the latter ones, increasing energy consumption. This paper proposes a congestion control scheme that considers traffic flows in order to control traffic congestion of the sensor nodes that are non-uniformly deployed over a large-scale wireless sensor network.
With the increasing number of vehicles in use in our daily life and the rise of traffic congestion problems, many methods and models have been developed for real time optimisation of traffic lights. Nevertheless, most methods which consider real time physical queue sizes of vehicles waiting for green lights overestimate the optimal cycle length for such real traffic control. This paper deals with the development of a generic hybrid model describing both physical traffic flows and control of signalised intersections. The firing times assigned to the transitions of the control part are considered dynamic and are calculated by a simplified optimisation method. This method is based on splitting green times proportionally to the predicted queue sizes through input links for each new cycle time. The proposed model can be easily translated into a control code for implementation in a real time control system.

In high speed communication networks, the determination of a transmission rate is critical for the stability of a closed-loop network system with the congestion control scheme. In ATM networks, the available bit rate (ABR) service is based on a feedback mechanism, i.e., the network status is transferred to the ABR source by a resource management (RM) cell. RM cells contain the traffic information of the downstream nodes for the traffic rate control. However, the traffic status of the downstream nodes can not be directly transferred to the source node in the IP based networks. In this paper, a new rate-based congestion control scheme using an exponential weighted moving average algorithm is proposed to build an efficient feedback control law for congestion avoidance in high speed communication networks. The proposed congestion control scheme assures the stability of switch buffers and higher link utilization of the network. Moreover, we note that the proposed congestion scheme can flexibly work along with the increasing number of input sources in the network, which results in an improved scalability.

Vehicular safety service reduces traffic accidents and traffic congestion by informing drivers in advance of threats that may occur while driving using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications in a wireless environment. For vehicle safety services, every vehicle must broadcasts a Basic Safety Message(BSM) periodically. In congested traffic areas, however, network congestion can easily happen, reduce the message delivery ratio, increase end-to-end delay and destabilize vehicular safety service system. In this paper, to solve the network congestion problem in vehicle safety communications, we approximate the relationship between channel busy ratio and the number of vehicles and use it to estimate the total network congestion. We propose a new context-aware transmit power control algorithm which controls the transmission power based on total network congestion. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using Qualnet, a network simulator. As a result, the estimation of total network congestion is accurately approximated except in specific scenarios, and the packet error rate in vehicle safety communication is reduced through transmit power control.
