In an urban network controlled by traffic signals, there is an interaction between the signal timing and the routes chosen by individual road users. This study develops a bi level programming model for traffic signal optimization in networks with path based traffic assignment. In the bi level programming model, genetic algorithm approach has been proposed to solve upper level problem for a signalized road network. Path based traffic assignment using column generation technique which is proposed by M.H. Xu, is applied at the lower-level. Genetic Algorithm provieds a feasible set of signal timings within specified lower and upper bounds signal timing variables and feeds into lower level problem. The performance of this model is investigated in numerical experiment in a sample network. In result, optimal signal settings and user equilibrium flows are made.
Truck traffic accounts for a substantial fraction of the traffic stream in many regions and is often the source of localized traffic congestion, potential parking and safety problems. Truck trips tend to be ignored or treated superficially in travel demand models. It reduces the effectiveness and accuracy of travel demand forecasting and may result in misguided transportation policy and project decisions. This paper presents the development of speed-flow relationships with truck impacts based on CORSIM simulation results in order to enhance travel demand model by incorporating truck trips. The traditional BPR(Bureau of Public Road) function representing the speed-flow relationships for roadway facilities is modified to specifically include the impacts of truck traffics. A number of new speed-flow functions have been developed based on CORSIM simulation results for freeways and urban arterials.

Joint channel assignment and routing is a well-known problem in multi-radio wireless mesh networks for which optimal configurations is required to optimize the overall throughput and fairness. However, other objectives need to be considered in order to provide a high quality service to network users when it deployed with high traffic dynamic. In this paper, we propose a re-configuration optimization model that optimizes the network throughput in addition to reducing the disruption to the mesh clients' traffic due to the re-configuration process. In this multi-objective optimization model, four objective functions are proposed to be minimized namely maximum link-channel utilization, network average contention, channel re-assignment cost, and re-routing cost. The latter two objectives focus on reducing the re-configuration overhead. This is to reduce the amount of disrupted traffic due to the channel switching and path re-routing resulted from applying the new configuration. In order to adapt to traffic dynamics in the network which might be caused by many factors i.e. users' mobility, a centralized heuristic re-configuration algorithm called State-Aware Joint Routing and Channel Assignment (SA-JRCA) is proposed in this research based on our re-configuration model. The proposed algorithm re-assigns channels to radios and re-configures flows' routes with aim of achieving a tradeoff between maximizing the network throughput and minimizing the re-configuration overhead. The ns-2 simulator is used as simulation tool and various metrics are evaluated. These metrics include channel-link utilization, channel re-assignment cost, re-routing cost, throughput, and delay. Simulation results show the good performance of SA-JRCA in term of packet delivery ratio, aggregated throughput and re-configuration overhead. It also shows higher stability to the traffic variation in comparison with other compared algorithms which suffer from performance degradation when high traffic dynamics is applied.

In this paper, we propose an efficient dynamic wavelength assignment algorithm in distributed WDM (Wavelength-Division Multiplexing) networks without wavelength conversion. The algorithm tries to assign a locally-most-used wavelength distributedly on a fixed routing path. We first formulate our algorithm by using the concept of a sample space which consists of optical fibers connected to nodes on a routing path of a lightpath to be assigned a wavelength. In particular, we analyze the blocking performance mathematically as compared with that of the most-used (MU) wavelength assignment algorithm previously proposed for WDM networks under centralized control. We also obtain numerical results by simulation on the blocking performance of other centralized/distributed wavelength assignment algorithms as well as our algorithm using the M/M/c/c dynamic traffic model. Consequently, we show that analytical results match simulation results and that our algorithm is efficient in distributed WDM networks in terms of blocking performance, control traffic overhead and computation complexity.
In this paper, we consider the train-fleet assignment problem to determine fleet assignment and seat allocation synchronously. An integer programming model of the problem and a decomposition-based solution approach are developed to handle short-term period deterministic orgin-destination demands. The primary objective used in the developed model is to maximize the total number of passengers transported during peak load periods, such as Chuseok national holiday period. Thus, in developing the model we choose to profit-pursuing system. We also show how the proposed model can be readily modified to incorporate profit-maximization. Using the empirical data sets provided by a Korean railroad company, we have tested the proposed solution approach and carried out various comparison analyses by varying traffic demand patterns and train schedules. The computational experiments reveal that the proposed solutions approach produces high quality solutions in reasonable computation time.

Previous studies on the transit assignment hardly show its achievement in research but have many limitations not only in theory but also in practice. This paper presents an integrated transit assignment model taking into account cost functions of multiple modes, such as auto, bus and subway, which represent an integrated network. An integrated transit network including cost functions and in-vehicle congestion needs to be developed. In addition, a link fare calculation model needs to be developed and applied to the model to calculate path travel costs. Based on these sub-models, a path-based traffic assignment model, which considers in-vehicle congestion and an integrated distance-based fare system in the integrated traffic network, is developed.
This paper presents an elastic demand stochastic user equilibrium traffic assignment that could not be easily tackled. The elastic demand coupled with a travel performance function is known to converge to a supply-demand equilibrium, where a stochastic user equilibrium (SUE) is obtained. SUE is the state in which all equivalent path costs are equal, and thus no user can reduce his perceived travel cost. The elastic demand SUE traffic assignment can be formulated based on a dynamic system, which is a means of describing how one state develops into another state over the course of time. Traditionally it has been used for control engineering, but it is also useful for transportation problems in that it can describe time-variant traffic movements. Through the Lyapunov Function Theorem, the author proves that the model has a stable solution and confirms it with a numerical example.
