In this research we developed a new traffic accident forecasting model on the basis of land use. A new traffic accident forecasting model by type was developed based on market segmentation and further introduction of variables that may reflect characteristics of various regions using Classification and Regression Tree Method. From the results of analysis, activities variables such as the registered population, commuters as well as road size, traffic accidents causing facilities being the subjects of activities were derived as variables explaining traffic accidents.
The current procedure of estimating accident reduction benefit shows fixed accident rates for each level of roads without considering the various characteristics of roadway geometries, and traffics. In this study, in order to solve the problems mentioned in the above, models were developed considering the characteristics of roadway alignments and traffic characteristics. The developed models can be used to estimate the accident rates on new or improved roads, In this study, only urban highways were included as a beginning stage. First of all. factors influencing accident rates were selected. Those factors such as traffic volumes. number of signalized intersections, the number of connecting roads, number of pedestrian traffic signals, existence of median barrier, and the number of road lane are also selected based upon the obtainability at the planning stage of roads. The relationship between the selected factors and accident rates shows strong correlation statistically. In this study, roads were classified into 4 groups based on number of lanes, level of roads and the existence of median barriers. The regression analysis had been performed for each group with actual data associated with traffic, roads. and accidents. The developed regression models were verified with another data set. In this study, in order to develop the proposed models, only data on a limited area were used. In order to represent whole area of the country with the developed models. the models should be re-analyzed with vast data.
This study deals with the traffic accidents of circular intersections in Korea. The purposes are to comparatively analyze the characteristics by operational type, and to develop the models using the data of 82 intersections. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular emphasis to modeling such the accidents as the roundabout and rotary in urban area. The main results analyzed are as follows. First, the null hypotheses that the number of accidents are the same in both the urban and rural intersections, and roundabout and rotary in urban area, were analyzed to be rejected. Second, 3 accident models were developed, which were all statistically significant. The independent variables used in the above models are the ADT, number of approach lane, bus stop, parking facilities, and others. This study could be expected to give some implications to the traffic safety policy decision-making.
This study deals with the accident models of arterial link sections by vehicle type. The objectives are to analyze the characteristics of accidents, and to develop the models by type. In pursuing the above, this study uses the data of 414 accidents occurred on 24 major arterial links in 2007. The main results analyzed are as follows. First, the number of accidents is analyzed to account for about 47% in passenger car, 15% in SUV and 10% in trucks. Second, 3 Poisson regression models which are all statistically significant are developed using passenger car, SUV and truck as dependant variables. Finally, AADT and the number of traffic islands as common variables, and the number of pedestrian crossings, lanes, connecting roads, intersections(4-Leg), rate of medians and the number of bus stops as specific variables of the models are selected.
The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between traffic accidents occurring at trumpet interchange ramps according to accident type as well as the relevant factors that led to the traffic accidents, such as geometric design elements and traffic volumes. In the process of analysis of the distribution of traffic accidents, negative binomial distribution was selected as the most appropriate model. Negative binomial regression models were developed for total trumpet interchange ramps, direct ramps, loop ramps and semi-direct ramps based on the negative binomial distribution. Based upon several statistical diagnostics of the difference between observed accidents and predicted accidents with four previously developed models, the fit proved to be reasonable. Understanding of statistically significant variables in the developed model will enable designers to increase efficiency in terms of road operations and the development of traffic accident prevention policies in accordance with road design features.
PURPOSES : Traffic accidents at intersections have been increased annually so that it is required to examine the causations to reduce the accidents. However, the current existing accident models were developed mainly with non-linear regression models such as Poisson methods. These non-linear regression methods lack to reveal complicated causations for traffic accidents, though they are right choices to study randomness and non-linearity of accidents. Therefore, to reveal the complicated causations of traffic accidents, this study used structural equation methods(SEM). METHODS : SEM used in this study is a statistical technique for estimating causal relations using a combination of statistical data and qualitative causal assumptions. SEM allow exploratory modeling, meaning they are suited to theory development. The method is tested against the obtained measurement data to determine how well the model fits the data. Among the strengths of SEM is the ability to construct latent variables: variables which are not measured directly, but are estimated in the model from several measured variables. This allows the modeler to explicitly capture the unreliability of measurement in the model, which allows the structural relations between latent variables to be accurately estimated. RESULTS : The study results showed that causal factors could be grouped into 3. Factor 1 includes traffic variables, and Factor 2 contains turning traffic variables. Factor 3 consists of other road element variables such as speed limits or signal cycles. CONCLUSIONS : Non-linear regression models can be used to develop accident predictions models. However, they lack to estimate causal factors, because they select only few significant variables to raise the accuracy of the model performance. Compared to the regressions, SEM has merits to estimate causal factors affecting accidents, because it allows the structural relations between latent variables. Therefore, this study used SEM to estimate causal factors affecting accident at urban signalized intersections.
Preventing the traffic accident by accurately predicting it in advance can greatly improve road traffic safety. The accurate traffic accident prediction model requires not only understanding of the factors that cause the accident but also having the transferability of the model. So, this paper suggest the traffic accident diagram using CART(Classification And Regression Tree) analysis, developed Model is compared with the existing accident prediction models in order to test the goodness of fit. The results of this study are summarized below. First, traffic accident prediction model using CART analysis is developed. Second, distance(D), pedestrian shoulder(m) and traffic volume among the geometrical factors are the most influential to the traffic accident. Third. CART analysis model show high predictability in comparative analysis between models. This study suggest the basic ideas to evaluate the investment priority for the road design and improvement projects of the traffic accident blackspots.

Traffic accidents occur in Korea are calculated with the 「Automobile Accident Negligence Ratio Certification Standard」 prepared by the 'General Insurance Association of Korea' and the insurance company's agreement or judgment is made. However, disputes are frequently occurring in calculating the negligence ratio. Therefore, it is thought that a more effective response would be possible if accident type according to the standard could be quickly identified using traffic accident information prepared by police. Therefore, this study aims to develop a model that learns the accident information prepared by the police and classifies it to match the accident type in the standard. In particular, through data mining, keywords necessary to classify the accident types of the standard were extracted from the accident data of the police. Then, models were developed to derive the types of accidents by learning the extracted keywords through decision trees and random forest models.

It is commonly estimated that there is a much higher potential for accidents at a crossroads than along a single road due to its plethora of conflicting points. According to the 2006 figures by the National Police Agency, the number of traffic accidents at crossroads is greatly increasing compared to that along single roads. Among others, crossroads installed with traffic signals have more varied influential factors for traffic accidents and leave much more room for improvement than ones without traffic signals; thus, it is expected that a noticeable effect could be achieved in safety if proper counter-measures against the hazards at a crossroads were taken together with an estimate of causes for accidents This research managed to develop models for accident forecasts and accident intensity by applying data on accident history and site inspection of crossroads, targeting four selected downtown crossroads installed with traffic signals. The research was done by roughly dividing the process into four stages: first, analyze the accident model examined before; second, select variables affecting traffic accidents; third, develop a model for traffic accident forecasting by using a statistics-based methodology; and fourth, carry out the verification process of the models.
PURPOSES: The purposes are to analyze the pedestrian accident severity and to develop the accident models by arterial road function. METHODS: To analyze the accident, count data and ordered logit models are utilized in this study. In pursuing the above, this study uses pedestrian accident data from 2007 to 2011 in Cheongju. RESULTS : The main results are as follows. First, daytime, Tue.Wed.Thu., over-speeding, male pedestrian over 65 old are selected as the independent variables to increase pedestrian accident severity. Second, as the accident models of main and minor arterial roads, the negative binomial models are developed, which are analyzed to be statistically significant. Third, such the main variables related to pedestrian accidents as traffic and pedestrian volume, road width, number of exit/entry are adopted in the models. Finally, Such the policy guidelines as the installation of pedestrian fence, speed hump and crosswalks with pedestrian refuge area, designated pedestrian zone, and others are suggested for accident reduction. CONCLUSIONS: This study analyzed the pedestrian accident severity, and developed the negative binomial accident models. The results of this study expected to give some implications to the pedestrian safety improvement in Cheongju.
