  • Reflux esophagitis is a common disease in developed nations. We describe the case of a female patient with endoscopic reflux esophagitis complicated by gastric dysmotility. Both electrogastrography and enterotachography were performed to detect gastric myoelectrical activity and pyloric sphincter function and evaluate gastric motility. The patient was treated only with herbal medications and general acupuncture, with electrical stimulation of the ST.36 (Zusanli) point, in addition to moxibustion therapy. After each primary and secondary treatment, the therapeutic effect was immediately evaluated. At the final follow-up 5 mon after the end of the secondary treatment, the patient’s general condition was assessed, in addition to the mucosa of the esophagus. At follow up, all the patients’ symptoms had disappeared, and the mucosa of the esophagus had returned to normal. We attributed these therapeutic effects to improved gastric dysmotility. To confirm the usefulness of this treatment method, studies of larger numbers of patients with reflux esophagitis treated with Korean traditional medicine are needed.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the synergistic effect of Samulnori and Ajaeng combination in music therapy. Samulnori is the Korea's most successful traditional music. The Ajaeng, Korean traditional string instrument, generally plays the bass part in ensemble music. However, we have tried a new kind of musical style. (As you can see in the Youtube, https://youtu.be/QHIciJTTY0w). Samulnori and Ajaeng combination of our style have not been tried by any other musicians in Korea. Results from this study showed that Samulnori-induced excitation and Ajaeng-induced dynamics probably contributed to the synergistic effect of Samulnori and Ajaeng.

  • Diabetic kidney disease is one of the most serious complications of diabetes. Although diabetic kidney disease can be effectively controlled through strict blood glucose management and corresponding symptomatic treatment, these therapies cannot reduce its incidence in diabetic patients. The sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and the traditional Chinese herb "Gegen" have been widely used in diabetes-related therapy. However, it remains unclear whether the combined use of these two kinds of medicines contributes to an increased curative effect on diabetic kidney disease. In this study, we examined this issue by evaluating the efficacy of the combination of puerarin, an active ingredient of Gegen, and canagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor for a 12-week intervention using a mouse model of diabetes. The results indicated that the combination of puerarin and canagliflozin was superior to canagliflozin alone in improving the metabolic and renal function parameters of diabetic mice. Our findings suggested that the renoprotective effect of combined puerarin and canagliflozin in diabetic mice was achieved by reducing renal lipid accumulation. This study provides a new strategy for the clinical prevention and treatment of diabetic kidney disease. The puerarin and SGLT2 inhibitor combination therapy at the initial stage of diabetes may effectively delay the occurrence of diabetic kidney injury, and significantly alleviate the burden of renal lipotoxicity.

  • PURPOSE: This study was conducted to find out the effects of neurocognitive rehabilitation therapy on the swallowing function and quality of life of stroke patients. METHODS: Thirty patients were selected and randomly allocated into an experimental and a control group. Patients in the experimental group received 15 minutes of neurocognitive rehabilitation treatment combined with 15 minutes of traditional treatment. For the control group, patients received 30 minutes of traditional dysphasia treatment. The experiments were conducted for 30 minutes a day, five times a week, for four weeks. New VFSS and SWAL-QOL were administrated to evaluate the outcomes. RESULTS: Swallowing functions were significantly improved in the experimental group and the control group (p < .05), but there was no statistically significant difference in pre- and post-interventional swallowing between the groups (p > .05). The quality of life was also significantly improved (p < .05) for both groups, but there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p > .05). Third, a correlational analysis between swallowing function and quality of life revealed a moderate correlation between New VFSS and SWAL-QOL (p < .05). CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that swallowing therapy through neurocognitive rehabilitation treatment program could be helpful for improving swallowing function and quality of life in stroke patients. Although there was no statistically significant changes from traditional rehabilitation therapy, training in recognizing the senses in the oral cavity and external environment through neurocognitive rehabilitation therapy can be applied as one of the treatment options.

  • The aim of this study was to collect and analyze the clinical studies of traditional herbal medicine and acupuncture treatments for colorectal cancer patients searched in Pubmed and Cochrane library in English. We collected the clinical studies, including randomized controlled trial, case control study and cohort study, in the PubMed and Cochrane library using keywords 'Colorectal Cancer', 'Korean Medicine', 'Traditional Chinese Medicine', 'Kampo' and 'Acupuncture'. Then we analyzed them according to the objective of the therapy, i.e. improving therapy prognosis, reducing chemotherapy's adverse event and reducing operational adverse event. In case RCT, we evaluate the quality of the study with jadad scale. Total 18 studies were selected. There were 3 studies about improving therapy prognosis, 6 studies about reducing chemotherapy's adverse event and 9 studies about reducing operational adverse event. Traditional medicine might improve therapy prognosis in terms of the survival rate, relapse/metastasis rate, quality of life and immune function. The specific herbal formula, 'Goshajinkigan' might not be successful about reducing chemotherapy's adverse event, peripheral neurotoxicity. 'Hangeshanshinto' might reduce the duration of oral mucositis but it is not clear to reduce the incidence of that. 'PHY906' might reduce the incidence of diarrhea. Acupuncture might reduce operational adverse event such as gastrointestinal dysfunction and pain. And 'Daikenchuto' might not be successful in reducing operational adverse event, gastrointestinal dysfunction. Further studies are needed to clarify the efficacy of traditional herbal medicine and acupuncture for colorectal cancer patients.
