  • Project delays, cost overruns, and disputes are becoming a norm for the construction industry in Hong Kong. Researchers argue that the inability of traditional contracts to manage risk and associated changes are perhaps the main points of contention. The Institution of Civil Engineers published a new engineering contract (NEC), NEC4 Suite of Contracts in this to facilitate better risk management through collaborative culture in construction projects. NEC aims to increase the chances of project success thought its flexible nature of contracts, 'simple' and 'clearly written' documents and provision for the incentive by adopting a better management approach. This paper focuses on traditional and NEC contracts to compare risk management and change management aspects. Through literature review and preliminary interviews with three industry professionals, the paper is exploring how a change in traditional contracts can recuperate from disaster. Our interviewees in this work have extensive experience in traditional as well as in NEC contracts. The results suggest a proactive risk management provisions in NEC contracts does make a difference to avoid later escalation of issues. Whereas, management of change helps streamline all identified issues through a structured process without going in mediation or litigation. NEC, with its new approach to collaborative working, allows partners to be vigilant, yet gratifying in the project process.

  • In an attempt to develop a method for the design of the aerial rope way, the traditional theories of rope way were examined and compared. The resulting formulas of the traditional and approximate parabolic curve theory were summarized and those of the catenary curve theory as an exact ones were summarized and newly developed when necessary. In particular, it was found that the resulting formulas from both of these theories can fully be expressed with only three dimensionless parameters $U^{*}$, $V^{*}$, and $W^{*}$, improving compactness and generality of these formulas. Comparision of the theories were done through error analysis, and it was shown that the error of the approximate parabolic curve is of order $U^{*2}$ and $V^{*}$. From this, it was concluded that the traditional parabolic curve theory has its limitation when the rope way becomes larger or steeper, leading to the necessity of the use of catenary curve theory.ve theory.

  • Cubic boron nitride (CBN) is known the second hardest material followed diamond and was provided industry as an abrasive grain in the late 1960's. Since the introduction of CBN, a large amount of research has been carried out to determine the best application condition for grinding operation. Despite the advantages in its characteristics, CBN has not yet gained full acceptance as more excellent abrasive grain than traditional one. The reason for this state is that the surface roughness ground by CBN is worse than by traditional one and dressing and truing is very difficult. This led user's resistance to the use of CBN as an abrasive grain. Present study is to investigate the cause of lower surface roughness ground by CBN single crystal abrasive grain comparing with traditional one.

  • We present a series of simple but novel nanopatterning methodologies inspired by traditional mechanical machining processes involving rolling, pullout, and forging. First, we introduce roll-to-roll nanopatterning, which adapts conventional rolling for continuous nanopatterning. Then, nano-inscribing and nano-channel lithography are demonstrated, whereby seamless nanogratings can be continuously pulled out, as in a pullout process. Finally, we discuss vibrational indentation micro- and nanopatterning. Similarly to the forging/indentation process, this technique employs high-frequency vertical vibration to indent periodic micro/nanogratings onto a horizontally fed substrate. We discuss the basic principles of each process, along with its advantages, disadvantages, and potential applications. Adopting mature and reliable traditional technologies for small-scale machining may allow continuous nanopatterning techniques to cope with scalable and low-cost nanomanufacturing in a more productive and trustworthy way.

  • In this research, ANN modeling method of SMES unit is developed for stability analysis, and the optimal site is selected to maximize stabilization effect of SMES unit. The ANN is trained by learning data which is obtained through the application of complex test function into the traditional mathematical mode. In order to verify the validity of proposed modeling method, fault data of sample power system is applied to both the traditional and the ANN models. When the response of traditional and proposed models are compared, the average error for the active and reactive power are 2.51[%], and 0.24[%], respectively. From the comparison, the relevance of proposed method is validated. For the transient stability analysis, an application method of the proposed model is presented, and the transient stability performance index, which describes system stabilization effect of SMES at disturbance, is also suggested, and optimal site selection method of SMES is presented. In the viewpoint of the voltage stability, system stabilization criterion of local bus is presented from PV curve, and then optimal site which can maximize the voltage stabilization of the whole power system, is decided from the proposed voltage stability performance index.

  • A shift algorithm of an automatic transmission is decided by the compromise between the performance and the fuel economy of the vehicle. But because in the traditional shia algorithm, throttle opening and vehicle speed are used to decide the shift points, the actual load of the vehicle is not exactly considered. In this paper, to consider the actual load, that is, the road grade and the vehicle acceleration, the longitudinal accelerometer is used to decide the shift points. As the result, the performance and the fuel economy of the vehicle which adapts the new shift algorithm are shown better than the traditional one.

  • A new type of perforated block is presented to be used in the construction of a step seawall. Two-dimensional hydraulic model test is performed to compare the overtopping rates between the traditional non-perforated step seawall and the perforated step seawall constructed with the new type of perforated blocks. The overtopping rate of the perforated step seawall is lower than that of the traditional non-perforated step seawall. The new type of perforated step seawall may be used as an alternative for water-amenity seawall in the future.

  • Prediction of customer failure rates plays an important role for establishing appropriate management policies and improving the profitability for industries. For these reasons, many LCD (Liquid crystal display) manufacturing industries have attempted to construct prediction models for customer failure rates. However, most traditional models are based on the parametric approaches requiring the assumption that the data follow a certain probability distribution. To address the limitation posed by the distributional assumption underpinning traditional models, we propose using parameter-free data mining models for predicting customer failure rates. In addition, we use various information associated with product attributes and field return for more comprehensive analysis. The effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method were demonstrated with a real dataset from one of the leading LCD companies in South Korea.

  • Lane marking detection based on a mono camera sensor provides a low cost solution to both ITS (intelligent transportation systems) and DAS (driver assistant systems). A number of methods and implementations have been reported in the literature. However, reliable detection is still an issue. Traditional approaches are mostly based on statistics or Hough transforms. However, the former approaches usually include many irrelevant detection areas, and the latter are not practical because actual lanes are not usually suitable for the approximation with linear or polynomial equations. In this paper, we focus on increasing the reliability of detection by reducing the detection of irrelevant areas while improving the detection of actual lane marking areas, which is usually a tradeoff for most conventional approaches. We use scale-space for that. Through experiments with real images obtained from various environments, we could achieve a significant improvement over traditional approaches.
