  • Korean High-Speed Train (350km/h), composed of 2 power cars, 2 motorized car and 3 trailer cars, has been developed and is under trial test. To verify the design requirements for the functions and traction performances of the train, KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute) decided to evaluate traction performances of the train during trial test. For this purpose, torque, velocity, voltage and current must be measured. KRRI has developed a measurement system that can measure vast and various signals effectively. In this paper, we introduce traction performances of Korean High-Speed Train. The traction measurement items are focused on the verification of motor block performances. Motor block consists of 2 motors. By this test, we verified traction performances of Korean High-Speed Train.

  • Traction motors driven by high speed switching inverters is demanded higher operating temperature, severe duty cycles, higher starting current, frequent voltage transients and finally severe environmental exposure. For applications to inverter duty, traction motors needs a special insulation system, which has characteristics of increased bond strength, lower operating temperature and higher turn-to-turn insulation. In this paper, design considerations and manufacturing procedure of 200 Class insulation system with polyimde(Kapton) main insulation and silicone resin VPI process on the traction motor for EMU will be reviewed. And performance test and long life evaluation test which prove stability and long life evaluation test which prove stability and reliability of insulation system for traction motor will be introduced.

  • Recently, as the feasibility study shows that trans-Korea railway and trans-continental railway are advantageous, interest in high speed railway system is increasing. Because railway vehicle is environment-friendly and safe compared with airplane and ship, its market-sharing increases gradually. Korean High Speed Train has been developed by KRRI for last 7 years to satisfy the need. • The aim of this research is to find out how the common earth network affects the level of the traction return current in the $2{\times}25 kV$ Power Supply System. The traction return current plays a significant role in the operation of the facilities near the rails. It is shown that the common earth network in the $2{\times}25 kV$ power supply system not only minimizes the level of the traction return current, but also increases the safety of the working crew on the railways. In order to determine the relationship between common earth network and the traction return current, we investigated the earth system of the Gyongbu High Speed Line that is constructed following the SNCF regulations. We carried out the field test in the Osong station. The results of the test show that the common earth network minimizes the effect of the traction return current. We also find that the simulated results are very similar to the test results. We concluded that the results of the test can be applied for the rest of the Gyongbu High Speed Line under construction.

  • Cooling type of traction motor for EMU in domestic is mostly an open type. Its system is a cooling air entered through air inlet cool down a traction motor and an hot air by traction motor get out air outlet. It is easy to cool it down but hard to maintain it. To improve an ability of maintenance, a total enclosed type traction motor is already developed and used in abroad, not an opne type. So we developed a total enclosed type traction motor which will be used in domestic and abroad EMU. We tried to reduce a weight and a size compared with the abroad one. In contrast with open type traction motors which cool off inside of motors, total enclosed motors cool down by cooling exterior frame of motors. In this case, cooling fins or air fan blowing to the exterior of motors are applied. The total enclosed type traction motor developed by us have two housing to block the foreign substance into inner of a motor and have two cooling fan to easy to reduce a heat happened at a coil. In this paper, design of a cooling structure of the total enclosed traction motor developed twice and performance verification through test will be discussed.

  • The 200 class insulation system which adopted to traction motor have excellent dielectric strength but weaken to thermal stress therefore deterioration phenomena analysis according to thermal stress is necessary. Accelerated thermal aging tests have been used to determine thermal reliability of stator coils used as traction motor in electric multiple unit. The conventional aging test is carried on according to IEC 60034-18-31 and IEEE Std. 275-1992. Variation in insulation resistance, P.I, capacitance, dielectric loss($tan{\delta}$) and partial discharge are measured during the aging cycle. Sample coils for traction motor were tested by accelerated aging test which composed of heat, vibration and moisture. Reliability and expected life were evaluated on the insulation system for traction motor.
