DEVELOPMENT OF A NETWORK-BASED TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM, VALIDATION OF ITS TRACTION CONTROL ALGORITHM AND EVALUATION OF ITS PERFORMANCE USING NET-HILS

  • This paper presents a network-based traction control system(TCS), where several electric control units(ECUs) are connected by a controller area network(CAN) communication system. The control system consists of four ECUs: the electric throttle controller, the transmission controller, the engine controller and the traction controller. In order to validate the traction control algorithm of the network-based TCS and evaluate its performance, a Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation(HILS) environment was developed. Herein we propose a new concept of the HILS environment called the network-based HILS(Net-HILS) for the development and validation of network-based control systems which include smart sensors or actuators. In this study, we report that we have designed a network-based TCS, validated its algorithm and evaluated its performance using Net-HILS.

  • The researches on the direct drive system, which directly transfers axle load of the traction motor to wheels, have been developed as a next generation drive system in Japan and Europe. As a result of excluding couplings and gear units, the direct drive system has advantages on the bogie mount space to be smaller sized, lower noisy, more efficient and less weighted than the conventional drive system - indirect drive system. Since the simplification of the direct drive system design depends on the design of the traction motors, the researches on the direct drive system with focusing on the traction motors get started. The advantages/disadvantages of direct drive system, types, structures, cooling systems and interfaces of the traction motors are presented on this paper. Furthermore, the development of other countries on the electric equipments of the next generation railway vehicles are discussed and the necessity & requirement for developing new concepts of traction motors are assured.

  • The common requirements of rough terrain mobile robots are long-term operation and high mobility in rough terrain to perform difficult tasks. In rough terrain, excessive wheel slip could cause an increase in the amount of dissipated energy at the contact point between the wheel and ground or, even more seriously, the robot could lose all mobility and become trapped. This paper proposes a traction control algorithm that can be independently implemented to each wheel without requiring extra sensors and devices compared with standard velocity control methods. The proposed traction algorithm is analogous to the stick-slip friction mechanism. The algorithm estimates the slippage of wheels by angular acceleration change, and controls the increase or decrease state of torque applied to wheels Simulations are performed to validate the algorithm. The proposed traction control algorithm yielded a 65.4% reduction of total slip distance and 70.6% reduction of power consumption compared with the standard velocity control method.

  • 누설전류는 의도된 회로 이외의 경로로 흐르는 전류를 말하며, 일반적으로 도시철도의 급전 시스템은 레일을 부극선으로 사용하기 때문에 레일이 대지와 완벽하게 절연되어 있지 않다면 레일을 통해 흐르는 전류의 일부는 누설전류로 땅속을 흐르게 된다. 이때 토양을 통해 누설 전류가 유출되는 레일과 지하매설 금속구조물에서 전식이 발생하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 국내 도시철도 운행지역 인근 지하매설 금속구조물의 전식방지 현황을 설문조사를 통하여 조사하였다.

Technological Experience and Crop Production in Dryland Farming Systems in Africa : The Case of Draught Animal Power in Ghana

  • Considerable controversy exists about the trend of animal traction effects on crop production in dryland farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This problem arises on account of the failure of the few available empirical studies to recognise the important of technological experience of the individual adopting farmers. This study hence addresses this issue by examining the effects of experience in animal traction technology (ATT) on farm size, cropping emphasis, total crop output and farm productivity. It is based on farm management survey data on 42 small holder farm households fro Ghana. Thirty of these households used animal traction technology (ATT) fro crop cultivation and the rest, mainly hand-hoe. The animal traction sub-sample is classified into three groups according to farmers' years of experience with the technology , thus , those with 1-2, 3-10, and more than 10. Evidence from the study shows that the progression of years of experience with ATT leads to inten ification of labour and land use systems, enhancement of degree of motivation to enter into the market economy, increases in total crop output and farm productivity resulting for decreases in cultivated acreages. The implication of the findings is that institutioal and technical support that do accompany the introduction of such technologies should be structured to last for a relatively longer period to accomodate the learning process.

  • Magnitude of generated harmonic currents along with the operation of AC traction has nonlinear characteristics, and generated harmonic currents for high speed traction are more and more in high speed railroad(HSR) systems, especially. This paper presents probabilistic approximation method for the harmonic currents analysis about the operating speed of AC traction. To use probabilistic method for HSR system, probability density function(PDF) for collected operating speed based measure data is calculated. Mean and variance of harmonic currents of single traction are obtained based on the operating speed PDF and electrical traction model. The results of Monte Carlo Simulation(MCS) are in well accordance with the experimental and analytic methods. The harmonics of different number of trainloads are systematically investigated. It is assessed by the total demand distortion(TDD) for the HSR system.

  • Recently, as the feasibility study shows that trans-Korea railway and trans-continental railway are advantageous, interest in high speed railway system is increasing. Because railway vehicle is environment-friendly and safe compared with airplane and ship, its market-sharing increases gradually. Korean High Speed Train has been developed by KRRI for last 7 years to satisfy the need. Korean High Speed Train (350km/h), composed of 2 power cars, 2 motorized car and 3 trailer cars, has been developed and is under trial test. To verify the design requirements for the functions and traction performances of the train, KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute) decided to evaluate traction performances of the train during trial test. For this purpose, torque, velocity, voltage and current must be measured. KRRI has developed a measurement system that can measure vast and various signals effectively. In this paper, we introduce traction performances of Korean High Speed Train. The traction measurement items are focused on the verification of motor block performances.   • With the active development of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), the application of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) has been expanded. As wide driving region of IPMSM for electric vehicle (EV) traction motor is required, many studies are conducted to improve characteristics of a motor in both low and high-speed driving regions. A motor in high-speed driving region generates (produces) large stress to the rotor. Thus, the rotor needs to be designed considering the mechanical safety. Therefore, in this paper, we conducted stress analysis and electromagnetic analysis to determine the centerpost's distance which is considered important during the design of IPMSM for EV traction motor in order to secure mechanical safety and satisfy specifications of output requirement.

A Power Regulation and Harmonic Current Elimination Approach for Parallel Multi-Inverter Supplying IPT Systems

  • The single resonant inverter is widely employed in typical inductive power transfer (IPT) systems to generate a high-frequency current in the primary side. However, the power capacity of a single resonant inverter is limited by the constraints of power electronic devices and the relevant cost. Consequently, IPT systems fail to meet high-power application requirements, such as those in rail applications. Total harmonic distortion (THD) may also violate the standard electromagnetic interference requirements with phase shift control under light load conditions. A power regulation approach with selective harmonic elimination is proposed on the basis of a parallel multi-inverter to upgrade the power levels of IPT systems and suppress THD under light load conditions by changing the output voltage pulse width and phase shift angle among parallel multi-inverters. The validity of the proposed control approach is verified by using a 1,412.3 W prototype system, which achieves a maximum transfer efficiency of 90.602%. Output power levels can be dramatically improved with the same semiconductor capacity, and distortion can be effectively suppressed under various load conditions.

이송중인 웹과 롤러간의 마찰 특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Characteristics of Friction Between a Moving Web and a Roller)

  • In the continuos process systems, traction between a moving web and rollers is one of key mechanisms for the study of major issues including the distributed control of tension, guiding, wrinkling, winding, and scratching. Energy is transferred from the driven rollers to the web and from the web to the idle rollers through traction. The characteristics of friction play major role in the determination of the traction force between the moving web and the rollers. In this paper the characteristics of friction between the moving web and the rollers are studied. A procedure to determine the friction coefficient between the moving web and rollers is developed. An experimental setup to validate the procedure is devised. Experimental results showed that the value of traction coefficient decreases as the operating web speed increases and increases as the operation web tension increase.
