The purpose of this study was to evaluate the kinematic characteristics of 5th hurdle clearance during the 100m hurdle final competition at the 2010 Colorful DaeGu pre-championship meeting. This study was also intended to provide the technical data for better performance for preparing the 2011 world championship. Lee and Jung need to change technical movement by reducing the distance of the take-off point from the hurdle and by decreasing the vertical velocity of the C.G.(center of gravity) at the takeoff. Powell's angle of the take-off leg showed bigger at the touchdown and smaller at the takeoff comparing to Lee's and Jung's. Furthermore, Powell's horizontal velocity of the C.G. was maintained at the takeoff and touchdown. So, Lee and Jung need to change angle of the take-off leg the same as Powell's. Both Lee and Jung need to increase the angle of landing leg at the touchdown. In addition to increasing the angle Jung needs to improve the knee and ankle velocity with the hurdling leg.
This study was conducted to investigate the running motion in the max-velocity phase(150-160m) and the fatigue phase(350-360m) during 400m sprint by performed elementary school athletes. Eighteen elementary school male athletes who achieved at least the 3rd place in the sprint at the Korea Gangwon-Do elementary school track and field meetings during 2004 and 2005 were selected as subjects. The running motions performed by the subjects were recorded using two 8mm high speed cameras at the nominal speed of 100 frames per second. The Direct Linear Transformation technique was adopted from the beginning of filming to the final stage of data extraction. KWON 3D motion analysis package program was used to compute the 3 Dimensional coordinates, smoothing factor in which lowpass filtering method was used and cutoff frequency was 6.0 Hz. The movement patterns during foot touchdown and takeoff for the running stride were related with the biomechanical consideration. Within the limitations of this study it is concluded: In order to increase running velocity, several conditions must be fullfilled at the instant of leg touchdown and takeoff during the fatigue phase(350-360m). First, the body C.O.G(Center of Gravity) height should be raised at the instant of leg touchdown and takeoff during the fatigue phase. Second, the foot contact time should be shortened and the takeoff distance should be increased at the foot takeoff during the fatigue phase. Third, the shank angular velocity with respect to a transverse axis through the center of gravity should be increased during the leg touchdown and takeoff in the fatigue phase. Forth, the active landing style described as clawing the ground with the sole of the foot should be performed during the leg touchdown and takeoff in the fatigue phase) phase. Fifth, In order to increase running velocity in the fatigue phase while taking a slightly greater leg knee angle and body lean angle within the range of the subject's running motion during the fatigue phase would result in greater flight distance.
The purpose of this study was to compare of the kinematic variables from takeoff preparation to takeoff used by long jumpers who recorded over 8meters in 2002 Busan Asian Game and 2003 Daegu Universiade and 2001 national championship. The kinematic characteristics from the last three stride to takeoff at the takeoff board were analyzed such as velocities, heights and angles. The conclusion were as follows; In order to record over 8meters the national long jumpers should have under 5cm height variation at the penultimate stride of the run-up. In the approach phase the horizontal velocity of the jumpers should reach to 10m/s in touchdown at takeoff board The vertical velocity must have 3.75m/s simultaneously in order to record 8meters. The jumpers need to continue talent of the horizontal velocity in touchdown at takeoff board and require jumping power of the takeoff leg at takeoff board The appropriate body variation range ratio between takeoff and touchdown should be 1.2 vs 1 and the trunk angle at touch down on the board should be close to the erect posture for higher body flight.
This study was conducted to examine the biomechanical characteristics of open spike in the volleyball to improve the technique of the volleyball spike. The subjects were six male college and high school athletes. The motions of volleyball spike were filmed by using two Sony VX 2000 Video Cameras. The mechanical factors were angle and angular velocity of body segments in the upper and the lower limbs. The conclusions were as follows; 1. The angle of the shoulder joint of the skilled showed larger than that of the unskilled in impacting of the volley ball spike. 2. The angle of the elbow joint of the skilled showed larger than that of the unskilled in impacting of the volley ball spike. 3. The angle of the wrist joint of the skilled showed smaller than that of the unskilled in impacting of the volley ball spike. 4. The angle of the hip joint of skilled showed larger than that of unskilled in impacting of the volley ball spike. 5. The angle of the knee joint of the skilled and the unskilled showed same in take off and impacting of the volley ball spike, and that of the skilled showed smaller than that of the unskilled in take-off touchdown and touchdown after impact of the volley ball spike. 6. The angle of the ankle joint of skilled showed larger than unskilled in take-off of the volley ball spike. 7. The angular velocity of the shoulder joint, elbow joint, wrist joint of the skilled showed faster than that of the unskilled in impacting of the volley ball spike. Taken together the result of them, I have come to conclusion that knee joint angle in touchdown of the take off should be decreased and knee joint angle in take off should be increased, and then stability of the take off should be made and, and that extension of the elbow joint should be made and wrist joint angle decreased and shoulder and hip joint angle increased, and then C.O.G of the arm and hand should be positioned ahead C.O.G of the body in impacting for effective impact of the spike, and that the transfer of the angular velocity of body segments for effective impact of the spike make from the proximal segment to the distal segment at spike in volleyball.
This study was conducted to investigate the technical factors of Lu Yu Fu vault actually performed by three men gymnasts participated in artistic gymnastics competition of 2003 summer Universiade in Daegu through the DLT method of three dimensional cinematography. To analyze these vaults, the instant events of Lu Yu Fu were set in the board touchdown(BTD), the board takeoff(BTO), the horse touchdown(HTD), the horse takeoff(HTO), the peak height(PH), the mat touchdown(MTD) respectively and the phases of that vault were set in the board contact(BC), the preflight(PRF), the horse contact(HC), the postflight(POF), the grounding on mat(GM) respectively After calculating the performance times, the CG displacement velocity, the kinetic energy impulse reaction force moment arm torque at the horse, the released angle piked angle addressed angle, the angular momentum angular velocity of whole body in x axis, and the horizontal displacement between the feet and CG, the following conclusions were reached. To perform the better Lu Yu Fu vault, a gymnast must have the large horizontal velocity of whole body with fast run-up, decrease the duration time and the horizontal vertical displacement of whole body in PRF, have the enough time to judge the correct magnitude and direction of force to brake or push the horse so as to lengthen the HC duration time at any cost. Also it is desirable to increase the horizontal vertical displacement of whole body in POF if possible, maintain the adequate piked position to decrease the angular velocity of whole body in x axis, prepare the grounding on mat previously and delay the release of the hand from the body to keep the angular momentum.
The purpose of this study was to perform a kinematic analysis of the high jump techniques of the three men's medalists at the 2011 IAAF Championships in Daegu (August 27-September 4, 2011). In particular, a three-dimensional coordinates method was used to analyze the last three strides before touchdown, the touchdown techniques, and the movements after takeoff toward the bar. An analysis of the, data for the biomechanical characteristics of the world's best high jumpers could contribute to an improvement in the performance of a national high jumper. The first conclusion of the data analysis was that the arm movements of the gold medalist, J. Williams, had a single arm form, whereas the arm movements of the other medalists were a double arm form. Second, the difference in the knee joint angles upon touchdown and toe-off was $10^{\circ}$. Third, J. Williams achieved his maximum CM height after takeoff (1.26 m) using the maximum flexion of his knee joint. Fourth, the foot contact duration of A. Dmitrik (0.11 s) was the shortest among the medalists, and the ratio for his transformation of horizontal velocity to vertical velocity was the greatest (75.25%) among the three. Last, the maximum CM height of T. Barry was the greatest, and his foot contact duration was the longest.
As a single subject study, it was purposed to investigate kinematic differences between Yang Hak Seon vault (i.e., handspring forward and salto forward straight with triple twist, Yang-1 vault hereafter) and Tsukahara $1260^{\circ}$ twist with salto forward straight (Yang-2 vault hereafter) in gymnastics. Yang Hak-Seon (23 years, 160 cm, and 52 kg) voluntarily participated in this study. Motion capture system, consisting of fourteen cameras, were used to measure Yang-2 vault with the sampling rate of 200 Hz. Twenty six reflective markers were placed on major anatomical points of 15 body segments. Successful two trials of Yang-2 vault were collected and analyzed for the comparison. Compared Yang-1 results were based on the previous study of Park and Song (2012). Results indicated superior linear kinematics of Yang-1 vault to those of Yang-2 vault before the touchdown of vault table. However, Yang-2 vault revealed superior angular kinematics to Yang 1 vault showing more trunk twist angle (a triple and a half twist) and its faster angular velocity during the airborne. The Yang 2 vault could has advantage of increasing angular motion than Yang 1 vault as a result of a half turn off the springboard onto the vault table and a sequential touchdown of the hands.
The kinematics involved in different landing strategies may be related to the occurrence of trauma. Several sources suggest that the angle of knee extension on touchdown and impact with the ground determines the magnitude of the impact force and, indirectly, knee loading. This study compared the initial knee angle and maximum knee flexion angle at the instant of impact on drop-landings between healthy men and women. In this study, 60 participants (30 males, 30 females) dropped from a height of 43 cm. A digital camera and video motion analysis software were used to analyze the kinematic data. When landing, there was significant difference between the two groups ($15.67{\pm}6.05^{\circ}$ in male, $24.10{\pm}6.34^{\circ}$ in female) in the mean knee flexion angle. The range of knee flexion on landing ($44.06{\pm}10.97^{\circ}$ in male, $36.96{\pm}9.99^{\circ}$ in female) also differed significantly (p<.05). The greater knee flexion that was observed in the male subjects would be expected to decrease their risk of injury. Women land with smaller range of knee flexion than men and this might increase the likelihood of a knee injury.
The design challenges when attempting to obtain sufficient strength for a deepwater steel catenary riser (SCR) include high stress near the hang-off location, an elevated beam-column buckling load due to the effective compression in the touchdown zone (TDZ), and increased stress and low-cycle fatigue damage in the TDZ. Therefore, a systematic strength analysis is required for the proper design of an SCR. However, deepwater SCR analysis is a new research area. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop an overall analysis procedure for a deepwater SCR. The structural behavior of a deepwater SCR under various environmental loading conditions was investigated, and a sensitivity analysis was conducted with respect to various parameters such as the SCR weight, weight of the internal contents, hang-off angle (HOA), and vertical soil stiffness. Based on a deepwater SCR design example, it was found that the maximum stress of an SCR occurred at a hang-off location under parallel loading direction with respect to the riser plane, except for a wave dominant dynamic survival loading condition. Furthermore, the tensile stress governed the total stress of the SCRs, whereas the bending stress governed the total stress at the TDZ. The weight of the SCR and internal contents affected the maximum stress of the SCR more than the HOA and vertical soil stiffness, because the weight of the SCR, including the internal contents, was directly related to its tensile stress.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinematic characteristics of the $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ hurdle clearances during the final of the 100-m hurdles event at the IAAF World Championships, Daegu 2011. To this end, the hurdling motions of the top 4 ranked female hurdlers in the competition were analyzed. A total of 12 cameras were used to record their motions, with a sampling frequency of 120 Hz. The cameras were calibrated using $11{\times}2{\times}1\;m$ control objects that covered all of the lanes ($1^{st}{\sim}8^{th}$ lanes). After analyzing all the data, we arrived at the following results. For the take-off phase, a negative relationship between the take-off time (CT) and athlete's rank was found. In addition, the average distances from the hurdle to take-off (L1) were shown to be 2.23 m and 2.17 m for the $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ hurdles, respectively. For the distance from the hurdle to landing (L2), Pearson ($1^{st}$ rank) and Carruthers($2^{nd}$ rank) showed inconsistent patterns whereas Harper ($3^{rd}$ rank) and Porter ($4^{th}$ rank) showed consistent patterns. All althetes revealed similar 3 steps patterns between hurdles, which consisted of a shorter $1^{st}$ step, longer $2^{nd}$ step and shorter $3^{rd}$ step.
