  • Four pathogenic fungal isolates belonging to different genera including Alternaria, Fusarium and Curvularia were isolated from selected diseased weeds growing in the fields in Dakahalia district. The inoculum of these pathogenic fungi specific to weeds were cultured, standardized and formulated as alginate pellets containing mycelium plus culture filtrate. These mycoherbicides were evaluated for disease severity(DS). Maximum DS was obtained with the alginate pellets of mycelium filtrate Fusarium solani. Physiological changes of the treated weed were determined 5 aiid 10 days after treatments. As compared to the healthy weeds, all mycoherbicide formulations significantly decreased the amount of photosynthetic pigments and subsequently soluble and insoluble sugars in the infected weeds. The mycoherbicide formulation of F. solani had the greatest effect on lowering to the abovementioned amount in the leaves of Chenopodium murale. Generally, treatment of weed leaves with the specific mycoherbicide led to a highly significant increase in total phenol content when compared to the healthy control weed. C. murale infected with the mycoherbicide formulation of F. solani had higher levels of phenolic compounds than those other treated weeds particularly after 10 days of inoculation.

  • Twenty species of higher fungi growing in the wild were collected and studied extensively for their lectin activities by using erythrocytes of human, rabbit and mouse blood. In total, 14 species demonstrated hemagglutination with some kinds of erythrocytes. Of twenty species, eight (Boletus edulis, B. splendidus, Clavaria zollingeri, Lactaritis subzonarius, L. volemus, Russula cutefracta, Pholiota squarrosa, and P. aspera) were shown lymphoagglutination with murine splenic lymphocytes. Protein contents were estimated from the crude lectin fraction. Above mentioned eight species contained relatively high amounts of proteins than other mushrooms. Since these species had coincidently, hiig emagglutinating activity as well, we could define them as lectin-containeing mushrooms. Some species also contained mitogenic lectins toward murine splenic lymphocytes.

  • The incidence of total molds, Fusarium species, and the estrogenic mycotoxin, zearalenone, in Korean grain samples were investigated . The majority of molds infecting grain were identified as belonging to the genus Alternaria , with an average infection rate of kernels of 43% and 32% in rice and baley, respectively. Fusarium speciens were less common, with average infection rates of 13% and 19% in reice and barley, respectively. A number of field fungi including Curvularia and Dactylaria were also observed. Among the Fusarium speices, 71 of 94 Fusarium isolates were identified as F.semitectum. A few F. moniliforme and F. equiseti were observed linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). In addition, deoxynivalenol was not deteted by ELISA . However, thepresence of molds, including Fusarium species, may pose possbile health hazards to persons consuming those grains.

  • A total of 118 fungal specimens were collected from Mt. Manggyeong, Chungnam province, Korea between July and October 2014. All specimens were identified to the species level using a combination of morphological characteristics and DNA sequencing. Out of 118 specimens, eight species, Amanita manginiana, A. pilosella, Calvatia holothurioides, Cantharellus tabernensis, Dicephalospora rufocornea, Gymnopus menehune, Marasmius brunneospermus, and Russula cerolens, have not been previously reported in Korea.

  • The demand of micro electrical mechanical system (MEMS) bio/chemical sensor is rapidly increasing. To prevent the contamination of sensing area, a filtration system is required in on-chip total analyzing MEMS bio/chemical sensor. A nano-filter was mainly applied in some application detecting submicron feature size bio/chemical products such as bacteria, fungi and so on. We suggested a simple nano-filter fabrication process based on replication process. The mother pattern was fabricated by holographic lithography and reactive ion etching process, and the replication process was carried out using polymer mold and UV-imprinting process. Finally the nano-filter is obtained after removing the replicated part of metal deposited replica. In this study, as a practical example of the suggested process, a nano-dot array was replicated to fabricate nano-filter fur bacteria sensor application.

  • In this study, the microbial safety and mechanical properties of xeno-bone graft material irradiated were investigated during the storage. Xeno-bone graft of the deminerlized bone matrix in carboxy-methyl-cellulose was gamma-irradiated and was cultured in PCA and PDA agar to check microbial contamination. Total aerobic bacteria and fungi were not detected in the irradiated and non-irradiated sample stored in accelerator at $30^{\circ}C$ for 10 months. Viscosity of CMC treated gamma irradiation was also not changed by holding period.

  • Filamentous marine fungi have proven to be a plentiful source of new natural products. Chaetomium, a widely distributed fungal genus in the marine environment, has gained much interest within the scientific community. In the last 20 years, many potential secondary metabolites have been detected from marine-derived Chaetomium. In this review, we attempt to provide a comprehensive summary of the natural products produced by marine-derived Chaetomium species. A total of 122 secondary metabolites that were described from 2001 to 2021 are covered. The structural diversity of the compounds, along with details of the sources and relevant biological properties are also provided, while the relationships between structures and their bioactivities are discussed. It is our expectation that this review will be of benefit to drug development and innovation.

  • Fungi are cosmopolitan and they occupy diverse niches as consumers, producers, and decomposers. They play critical roles in the environment by enabling nutrient cycling and generating a plethora of secondary metabolites. This study aimed to identify and characterize fungal strains isolated from diverse sources on Muui Island, Republic of Korea. In 2023, a total of 86 fungal strains were collected and examined. Investigation of the morphological features and phylogenetic analyses of multiple barcode loci identified one putative novel species and two species previously unrecorded in the Republic of Korea: Colletotrichum sp., Colletotrichum guizhouense, and Fusarium brachygibbosum. This study provides a comprehensive description of their molecular phylogenies and morphological characteristics. These findings will contribute to the existing knowledge about fungal species in the Republic of Korea and future research on the fungal diversity on Muui Island.

  • Aspergillus species play a crucial role in terrestrial environments as degraders and are well known for producing various secondary metabolites. Recently, Aspergillus species have been discovered in marine environments, exhibiting adaptability to high salinity and producing diverse secondary metabolites with valuable properties. However, limited research has focused on their marine diversity, leading to inaccurate species identification. The current study addresses this gap by investigating diverse marine habitats in the Republic of Korea, including sediment, seawater, seaweed, and marine animals. From three coasts of the Korean Peninsula, 472 Aspergillus strains were isolated from the various marine habitats. A total of 41 species were accurately identified using multigenetic markers: internal transcribed spacer, calmodulin, and b-tubulin. The findings underscore the importance of accurate identification and provide a basis for elucidating the functional role of marine-derived Aspergillus species in marine ecosystems.
