Diesel oil-degrading bacterial strains were isolated from diesel oil contaminated soil and called HS series (HS1, HS2 and HS3). These strains were identified as Acinetobacter sp. (HS1) and Pseudomonas sp. (HS2 and HS3) based on Biolog test, cellular fatty acid composition, and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. These strains were coltivated in liquid minimal media containing 2% diesel oil, and diesel oil-degrading activity was measured. As result, all strains degraded over 70% of total diesel oil. But PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon)- and pris- tane-degrading rate of these strain was below 20% of total PAH and pristane. The HS 1 strain showed highest hydrophobicity and low emulsifying activity among the experimental strains and high diesel oil-degrading activity. From the above-mentioned result, microcosm experiment was performed with the HS1 strain. The HS1 strain showed a degrading activity of over 80% of total diesel oil in microcosm test. And microbial activity was correlated to diesel oil-degrading activity. Therefore, it is suggested that the HS1 strains could be effectively used for the bioremediation for diesel oil.
Strain properties of concrete member which acts as an important factor in the stability of the concrete structure in the event of fire, significantly affected the characteristics of the coarse aggregate, which accounts for most of the volume. For this reason, there are many studies on concrete using artificial lightweight aggregate which has smaller thermal expansion deformation than granite coarse aggregate. But the research is mostly limited on concrete using clay-based lightweight aggregate. Therefore, in this study, the high temperature compressive strength and elastic modulus, thermal strain and total strain, high temperature creep strain of concrete was evaluated. As a result, remaining rate of high-temperature strength of concrete using lightweight aggregate is higher than concrete with general aggregate and it is determined to be advantageous in terms of structural safety and ensuring high-temperature strength from the result of the total strain by loading and strain of thermal expansion. In addition, in the case of high-temperature creep, concrete shrinkage is increased by rising loading and temperature regardless of the type of aggregate, and concrete using lightweight aggregate shows bigger shrinkage than concrete with a granite-based aggregate. From this result, it is determined to require additional consideration on a high temperature creep strain in case of maintaining high temperature like as duration of a fire although concrete using light weight aggregate is an advantage in reducing the thermal expansion strain of the fire.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of strain on broiler performance, and age at slaughter and postchilling (PC) aging time on meat quality traits. A total of 500 one-day-old chicks (250 Hubbard classic and 250 Lohman) were reared under commercial conditions. Half of the broiler birds from each strain were slaughtered at 32 days and the other half at 42 days old. At each processing day, 168 carcasses were randomly selected (84 Hubbard and 84 Lohman) and divided into groups of 28 carcasses within each strain, and aged for 0, 4 and 24 h after chilling. Average weekly body weight was comparable between strains. Feed conversion ratio was higher (p<0.05) for the Hubbard strain during the second and third week of age. Initial carcass pH was significantly (p<0.05) affected by age where younger birds (32-d-old) had lower pH values than older (41-d-old) birds. Breast temperature was higher (p<0.001) for Lohman than Hubbard at 0, 2 and 4 h of PC. Younger birds had a lower breast temperature (p<0.001) at all measured times of PC. Thaw loss, cook loss and water holding capacity were not significantly affected by strain, age or aging time. Lohman strain had more tender meat (p<0.05) than Hubbard strain, and tenderness was improved with the increase of broiler age and aging time. Meats from Hubbard were lighter and less red than those from Lohman strain where younger birds had darker color. In conclusion, strain, age at slaughter and PC aging duration are critical to breast meat quality characteristics, and 4 h of aging are required before deboning in order to obtain more tender fillets.
A mutant strain having increased productivity of both enzymes, protease and amylase, was obtained from A. flavus KU 153, isolatd from South Korea for its high protease production by successive ultra-violet light irradiation, Two glucoamylases from the mutant strain selected were purified from wheat branculture by successive salting out, followed by dialysis and column chromatography, and their characteristics were compared with those of the wild strain. Glucoamylase production of the mutant selected was increased about 3.3 times compared with the wild strain, and 2.1 times compared with the parental strain, ${\alpha}-amylase$ activity of the mutant selected was about 2 times hugher than that of the wild strain or the parental strain. Protease and cellulase productivities of the muant selected were all alike compared with those of the highly proteolytic mutant, the parental strain. Therefore, it was considered that the back mutation on the protease production did not occurred in the formation process of the glucoamylase producing mutant. Total activities of glucoamylase I and II from the mutant selected were 2.86 and 3.65 times higher compared with those from the wild strain, respectively. Considering the optimal pH-thermal stability and Km-Vmax value of glucoamylase I and II from both strains, wild and mutant, it was deduced that the characteristics of glucoamylase I and II from the wild strain did not altered during the mutation process. Therefore, it was concluded that the selected mutant did not induce the formation of another glucoamylase isozyme, or the changes in the characteristics of the glucoamylase, but induce the productivity of the same glucoamylase I and II by the action of regulatory gene.

In coupon test of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) as brittle materials, the converted strain derived from total deformation and effective length was introduced and its advantages were described. In general, measured value from strain gauge is used for determining the tensile properties of material, but it is not quite effective in CFRP because brittle material can not redistribute its stress and it only represents local behavior. For this reason, the converted strain response can be utilized effectively as a supplementary indicator, which evaluated the average value of tensile properties in brittle material and confirmed the strain measured by strain gauge. In addition, the converted strain clearly visualized 1) the effect of initial internal strain caused by fabrication errors and setup misalignment when applying gripping force and 2) post-response of partial rupture of CFRP caused by non-uniform strain distribution. non-uniform strain distribution.

To investigate the relationship between strain distribution and tensile properties of brittle material, five types of tensile coupon of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) modified the tab portion in order to have a strain distribution including S0, SD1, SD2, SV1, SV2 were tested. The ultimate stress and strain of SD2 and SV2 which was intended to have larger strain distribution were smaller than those of SD1 and SV1, that was more clearly shown in the test results of the symmetric coupons (SV series) than the asymmetric coupons (SD series). In addition, the ultimate stress and strain of most coupons with strain distribution in this study were decreased when compared to the control group with uniform strain. These results were analyzed in various ways through 1) the average of the strain values directly measured by the strain gages, 2) the converted strain calculated by dividing the total deformation by the effective length, and 3) the ultimate effective strain derived from both the elastic modulus and the ultimate load. The values measured by strain gage indicates response of the local region precisely, but it does not represent the response from whole section. However, the converted strain and effective strain can supplement disadvantage of gage because they represent the average response of whole section. In particular, the effective strain can provide rupture strain conservatively, which can be utilized in practice, when the value obtained by strain gage was not effective due to gage damage or abnormal gage readings near ultimate load. This value provides a value that can be used even when partial rupture has occurred and is reasonably useful for specimens with strain distribution.

Geotextile tubes are basically a huge sack filled with sand or dredged soil. Geotextile tubes are made of permeable woven or non-woven synthetic fibers (i.e., polyester or PET and polypropylene or PP). The geotextile tubes' performances in strength, dewatering, retaining solid particles and stacked stability have been studied extensively in the past. However, only little research has been done in the observation of the deformation behavior of geotextile tubes. In this paper, a large-scale apparatus for geotextile tube experiment is introduced. The apparatus is equipped with a slurry mixing station, pumping and delivery station, an observation station and a data station. For this study the large-scale apparatus was utilized in the studies regarding the stresses on the geotextile and the deformation behavior of the geotextile tube. Model tests were conducted using a custom-made woven geotextile tubes. Load cells placed at the inner belly of the geotextile tube to monitor the total soil pressure. Strain gauges were also placed on the outer skin of the tube to measure the geotextile strain. The pressure and strain sensors are attached to a data logger that sends the collected data to a desktop computer. The experiment results showed that the maximum geotextile strain occurs at the sides of the tube and the soil pressure distribution varies at each geotextile tube section.
For a microbial control of a plant pathogenic Pseudomonas syringae, Bacillus sp. strain BT182-3 was isolated. The strain BT182-3 had a growth inhibition against P. syringae not only on agar plate but also on cultured broth. After heat treatment at $40^{\cird}C$ and $80^{\cird}C$ for 30min, the lytic substance from the strain BT182-3 had about 52% remaining activity and 17% remaining activity, respectively. The optimal pH and temperature of the lytic substance was 6.0 and $28^{\cird}C$, respectively. Germination ratio of healthy radish seeds was 87% at $25^{\cird}C$ for 5 days in 0.8% saline, and that of the radish seeds infected with P. syringae was 67%, while that of the radish seeds treated with cultured broth of the strain BT182-3 was 90%. The 5-days healthy radish seedlings were 3.90cm at high and the seedlings infected with P. syringae were 3.06cm at high, while the seedlings treated with cultured broth of the strain BT182-3 were 4.30cm at high. The growth of the radish seedlings infected with P. syringae was inhibited after cultivation for 40days on pots, while the growth of the infected radish seedlings with P. syringae was recovered at stem length, root length and total weight at the same as the healthy seedlings after treatment of a lytic substance from the strain BT182-3.
In 2019, as a subset study to discover indigenous yeast species in Korea, a total of 20 yeast species were isolated from soil samples collected in Pochoen-si. Among them, eight strains were unreported species. From the high 26S rRNA gene sequence similarity and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade with the closest species, it was determined that each strain belonged to independent and predefined yeast species. The 20 strains were assigned to the genera Aureobasidium (1 strain) and Meyerozyma (1 strain) of the phylum Ascomycota and Cystofilobasidium (2 strains), Filobasidium (1 strain), Naganishia (2 strains), Bullera (3 strains), Leucosporidium (9 strains) and Sampaiozyma (1 strain) of the phylum Basidiomycota. There is no official report of the following species in Korea: Leucosporidium creatinivorum (4 strains), Leucosporidium escuderoi(2 strains), Leucosporidium golubevii(1 strain) and Leucosporidium intermedium (2 strains). Basic biochemical characteristics, colony and cell morphology are also described in the species description section.
By employing ab-initio total-energy and electronic-structure calculations based on the density-functional theory, we studied the effects of surface strain ${\varepsilon}_s$ on the adsorption properties of a Au adatom on defective MgO(001) surfaces with surface oxygen vacancies ($F_s$ centers). The formation energy of the $F_s$ center on MgO(001) varied very slightly in the region of ${\varepsilon}_s$ from -6% to -4% and monotonically decreased with the increase in ${\varepsilon}_s$, from -4% to +6%. As ${\varepsilon}_s$ increased, the adsorption energy ($E^{Fs}_{ads}$) of Au on the $F_s$ center of strained MgO(001) monotonically decreased and, in particular, showed a much larger decrease in $E^{Fs}_{ads}$ for a tensile surface strain of ${\varepsilon}_s$ > +4%. The surface strain dependence on the physical properties, such as the charge states, the spatial charge rearrangement, for Au on the $F_s$ center of strained MgO(001) surfaces was also analyzed. These results provide important physical information on the effects of surface strain on the adsorption of Au on MgO(001) surfaces with $F_s$ centers.
