In order to meet the harmonics standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547 the output quality of a grid connected inverter should satisfy a certain level of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) value. However, the output quality of an inverter gets degraded due to the grid voltage harmonics, the dead time effects and the nonlinearity of the switches, which all contributes to a higher THD value of the output. In order to meet the required THD value for the inverter output under the distorted grid condition the use of harmonic controller is essential. In this paper a novel feedforward harmonic compensation method is proposed in order to effectively eliminate the low order harmonics in the inverter current to the grid. In the proposed method, unlike the conventional harmonic control methods, the hamonic components are directly compensated by the feedforward terms generated by the PR controller with the grid current in the stationary frame. The proposed method is simple in implementation but powerful in eliminating the harmonics from the output. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified through the PSIM simulation and the experiments with a 5kW single phase grid connected inverter.
Grid-connected inverters should satisfy a certain level of total harmonic distortion (THD) to meet harmonics standards, such as IEEE 519 and P1547. The output quality of an inverter is typically degraded due to grid voltage harmonics, dead time effects, and the device's turn-on/turn-off delay, which all contribute to increasing the THD value of the output. The use of a harmonic controller is essential to meet the required THD value for inverter output under a distorted grid condition. In this study, an improved feedforward harmonic compensation method is proposed to effectively eliminate low-order harmonics in the inverter current to the grid. In the proposed method, harmonic components are directly compensated through feedforward terms generated by the proportional resonant controller with the grid current in a stationary frame. The proposed method is simple to implement but powerful in eliminating harmonics from the output. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through simulation using PSIM software and experiments with a 5 kW single-phase grid-connected inverter.
This paper proposes a control method for reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid current of three-phase grid-connected inverter systems when the grid voltage is distorted. The THD of the grid current caused by grid voltage harmonics is derived by considering the phase delay and magnitude attenuation due to the hardware low-pass filter (LPF). The Cauchy-Schwarz inequality theory is used in order to search more easily for the minimum point of the THD. Both the gain and angle of the compensation voltage at the minimum point of the THD of the grid current are derived with the variation of cut-off frequencies of the hardware LPF. Simulation and experimental results show the validity of the proposed control methods.
Harmonics happened due to nonlinear systems such as UPS, SCR controlled motors, and fluorescent lighting in distribute power system is very important subject to optimal operation and control of power system. Harmonics sometimes make incorrect operation of protective relaying system under normal condition on power system. In this study, total harmonics distortion(THD) of power were measured and analyzed by the field test on electrical facilities which were installed at the rural industrial complex in Chungbuk province. In addition, the deprivation of power factor by harmonics and the content of THD which is measured at neutral line was researched.

This paper presents a harmonic analysis of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) using a double Fourier series (DFS) algorithm. First, the application of DFS for harmonic calculation in the MMC is made by considering the effect of arm inductor. The analytical results are then confirmed by comparing with the simulation results of using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm. Finally, distribution of harmonics and total harmonic distortion (THD) in the MMC will be analyzed in three cases: harmonics versus number of levels of MMC, harmonics versus total switching frequency and harmonics versus modulation index. The simulation results are performed in the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation program in order to verify the analytical results obtained by Matlab programming.
In order to reduce the cost, improve the efficiency and simplify the complicated control of existing isolated LED drivers, an improved boundary conduction mode (BCM) Buck ac-dc light emitting diode (LED) driver with extended output voltage and low total harmonic distortion is proposed. With a coupled inductor winding and a stacked output, its output voltage can be elevated to a much higher value when compared to that of the conventional Buck ac-dc converter, without sacrificing the input harmonics and power factor. Therefore, the proposed Buck LED driver can meet the IEC61000-3-2 (Class C) limitation and has a low THD. The operating principle of the topology and the design methodology of the ac-dc LED driver are presented. A 150 W ac-dc prototype was built in the laboratory and it shows that the input current harmonics meet the lighting standard. In addition, the THD is less than 16% at a typical ac input. The peak efficiency is higher than 96.5% at a full load and a normal input.
This paper proposes the control method for compensating for unbalanced grid current and reducing a total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid current at the three-phase grid-connected inverter systems under unbalancd and distorted grid voltage conditions. The THD of the grid current caused by grid voltage harmonics is derived by considering the phase delay and magnitude attenuation due to the hardware low-pass filter (LPF). The Cauchy-Schwarz inequality theory is used in order to search more easily for a minimum point of THD. Both the gain and angle of a compensation voltage at the minimum point of THD of the grid current are derived. The negative-sequence components in the three-phase unbalanced grid voltage are cancelled in order to achieve the balanced grid current. The simulation and experimental results show the validity of the proposed control methods.
This paper proposes a new THD reduction algorithm for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) with offset voltage injection operated in nearest level modulation (NLM). High voltage direct current (HVDC) is actively introduced to the grid connection of offshore wind powers, and this paper deals with a voltage generation technique with an MMC for wind power generation. In the proposed method, third harmonic voltage is added for reducing the THD. The third harmonic voltage is adjusted so that each of the pole voltage magnitudes maintains a constant value with a maximum number of (N+1) levels, where N is the number of sub-modules per arm. By using the proposed method, the THD of the output voltage is mitigated without increasing the switching frequency. In addition, the proposed method has advantageous characteristics such as simple implementation. As a part of this study, this paper compares the THD results of the conventional method and the proposed method with offset voltage injection to reduce the THD. In this paper, simulations have been carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, and the proposed method is implemented by a HILS (Hardware in the Loop Simulation) system. The obtained results show agreement with the simulation results. It is confirmed that the new scheme achieved the maximum level output voltage and improved the THD quality.
This paper reports the investigation results on the leakage currents (LC) on polymeric outdoor insulators. The samples used were EPDM (ethylene prophylene diene monomer) insulators used at 20 kV distribution lines. AC voltage was applied and the LC waveforms were measured under various environmental conditions (humidity and pollution). Digital data of the LC was transferred from a digital storage oscilloscope to a computer for further analysis. The LC waveform parameters such as magnitude and harmonic content (as indicated by the total harmonic distortion (THD)) were analyzed. The experimental results showed that 3rd, 5th and 7th harmonics and higher odd harmonics were observed for symmetrical-distorted LC waveforms while for unsymmetrical-distorted LC waveforms, odd and even harmonics were observed. The LC analysis indicated that there are 5 stages of insulator conditions from normal condition up to flashover correlated with different kind of LC waveforms. The results also showed that in general the magnitude of LC was good enough to show the condition of the insulators. However, under discharge condition (for example as a result of dry band arching) the LC magnitude should be combined by the THD to show a better correlation with the insulator condition. The product between THD and LC magnitude may be used as a diagnostic parameter.
