Applying a general coupled lateral and torsional vibration finite element model of gear pair element, this paper intends to look into in detail the coupled lateral and torsional vibration characteristics of a turbo-chiller rotor bearing system, having a bull-pinion speed increasing gear. Investigations have been carried out systematically by comparing the uncoupled and coupled natural frequencies and their mode shapes upon varying the gear mesh stiffness with considerations on rotating speeds, and also by comparing the strain energies of lateral and torsional vibration modes. Results hale shown that some modes may hale the coupled lateral and torsional mode characteristics as the gear mesh stiffness Increases over a certain value, and moreover that their associated dominant modes may be different from their initial modes, j.e., a certain dominant mode may change from an initial torsional one to a lateral one or from an initial lateral one to a torsional one.

The powertrain is a system of exciters which are connected by vibration transmitters and noise radiators. The powertrain has infinite natural frequencies. If the engine explosion, excites a certain natural frequency, then the powertrain system seriously vibrates. The torsional vibration arises from here. Torsional vibration like this can cause various noises as rattle and booming. In this study, the simulation models of multiple degrees of freedom were developed to reduce the torsional vibration of the powertrain. These models are combined mass moment of inertias with torsional springs. The free and forced vibration analyses were carried out by these models; and the validity of the simulation models were checked by the field test. The reduction effect of the torsional vibration along the driveline design factor is presented by the analytical results.
Automobile company tries to reduce the inertia of powertrain to increase the fuel efficiency and increase the engine power every year to make the high speed driving possible at full load condition. These cause the torsional vibration of powertrain. But the demand about ride comfort improvement is increased constantly, so torsional vibration of powertrain become an emergency problem to be cured. This study is a basic research to reduce the torsional vibration of powertrain at driving condition. First, the heavy duty powertrain is characterized as a vibrating system. Its natural frequencies and mode shapes are reviewed. Second, by comparison of simulation results and experiment results, validity of developed model is verified. Finally, the couterplan which can reduce the torsional vibration by mode analysis and parameter modification is suggested.

The crankshaft system of engine is a complex vibratory object and its vibration modes are consisted of torsional, axial and their coupled vibration. Among them, the torsional vibration causes engine noise as well as serious fatigue faillures of crankshaft. If the troules of noises and crankshaft strength are forecasted by torsional vibration calculation in the design atage of crankshaft, the torsional damper is adopted as the final countermeasure. In this paper, some computer program to calculate crankshaft torsional vibration of engine are developed and with developed programs, an efficient rubber-viscous damper for automobile and with developed programs, an efficient rubber-viscous damper for automobile engine is designed and manufactured, and then it is fitted on the actual automobile engine to confirm its calculated efficiency. By comparing the measured result (with damper and without damper) with the calculated one, the reliability of developed computer programs and the performances of manufactured damper are confirmed.
A Shipboard power system consists of three or four diesel generator sets connected to a grid. In case of dual fuel diesel generator sets employed LNG ship as a prime mover, large amounts of electricity are required for electric propulsion, auxiliary machinery and accommodation facilities. The electrical connection between generators through a network, torsional vibration can lead power swings. In this paper, the influence on the network by the torsional vibration of diesel generator sets in grid operation were studied. The torsional vibration characteristics were investigated and analyzed through theoretical analysis and the vibration measurement and the results were presented.

Nowadays, the natural frequencies and their relative amplitudes of torsional vibration for the marine diesel engine shafting are usually calculated by the Holzer method and also its resonant amplitudes are estimated by the energy method, that is, by equating the exciting energy to the damping one. Therefore, the forced vibration amplitudes out of the resonant points can not be calculated by the above-mentioned method. And so, the reasonable barred-ranges of torsional vibration can not be set and also the flank of resonant point which locates near the calculation limit can not be estimated. For such problems, the equation of forced vibration with damping must be solved directly and these results can be utilized to derive the synthesized torsional vibration of the marine diesel engine propulsion shafting. In this study, the equation of forced vibration with damping for the marine diesel engine propulsion shafting is derived and its steady-state vibration is calculated by the mechanical impedance method. For numerical calculation of the actual propulsion shafting a computer program is developed. In order to prove the reliability of this program, an actual ship's propulsion shafting whose torsional vibration was measured is analyzed and the calculated propulsion shafting whose torsional vibration was measured is analyzed and the calculated results are compared with the measured ones. And also, they are compared with the calculated results which were obtained by the modal analysis.
In diesel engines, it is inevitable that the torsional vibration is produced by the fluctuation of engine torque. Therefore, it is necessary to establish preventive measures to diminish the torsional vibration. The sleeve spring type damper is one of the preventive measures for reducing the torsional vibration. In this study, the closed form equations to predict the spring constant of a sleeve spring and the torsional characteristics of the torsional vibration damper are proposed to calculate stiffness of the damper and verified their availability through the finite element analysis and experiments. And the stability of the sleeve spring torsional vibration damper is verified by analyzing the inner star and outer star, which are the core parts of the damper, and 2-roll bending process is proposed to manufacture sleeve spring. The program to calculate the initial radius including spring-back effect is developed, and the FEA method to analyze elasto-plastic problem was verified through analysis of 90$^{\circ}$bending process. The results of the analysis are in good agreements with those of the experiments. The newly proposed method can be used as an advanced technique that remarkably curtails cost of production and replaces the conventional forming.
ISO 22266-1 issued in May 2009 provides guidelines for applying shaft torsional vibration criteria, under normal operating conditions, for the coupled shaft system and long blades of a turbine generator set. In case that a turbine generator vendor do not meet the separation margin of torsional natural frequencies in the technical specifications of the purchaser, this standard can present the reasonable and objective criteria about torsional vibration which both purchaser and supplier can agree on, while ensuring the integrity of turbine generator. This paper describes the application case of ISO 22266-1 for the establishment of torsinal vibration criteria under retrofitting the turbine generator of 'U' nuclear power plant.
The diesel engine and reduction gear combination is one of the common propulsion system in a naval vessel. Since the diesel engine has torsional vibration caused by reciprocating motion of the mass and gas pressure force of the cylinder, high cycle torsional fatigue can be occurred. Therefore, ROK navy restricts the maximum stress of the propulsion shaft according to MIL G 17859D. In this paper, the root cause for the failure of the diesel engine and reduction gear connecting shaft occurred in typical naval vessel is investigated based on the measured bending and torsional moment according to MIL G 17859D procedure.
Power driving shaft systems with reduction gear are frequently equipped with elastic couplings to protect reduction gears and to relieve the torsional vibration problems. In this study, torsional vibration characteristics for the engine shafting system with elastic couplings are investigated and the calculating program is developed. It is confirmed that torsional vibration can be controled by careful selection of a elastic coupling with suitable characteristics and the suitability of a elastic coupling can only be determined as a result of a complete torsional vibration analysis including engine conditions such as misfring for shafting system.
