  • For the design and analysis of 3D object featuring complexity and irregularity in shape, sectional digital images measured by an industrial CT scanner are employed to generate a finite element model with uniform voxels. The voxel model plays a key role in developing an integrated reverse engineering system including geometric modeling, simulation and optimization. Design examples applied to topology optimization show that the proposed approach can provide a remarkable reduction in time cost at the conceptual and detail design stages.

  • Most engineering products contain more than one component. Failure occurs either at the connection itself or in the component at the point of attachment of the connection in many engineering structures. The allocation and design of connections such as bolts, spot-welds, adhesive etc. usually play an important role in the structure of multi-components. Topology optimization of connection component provides more practical solution in design of multi-component connection system. In this study, a topology optimization based on density distribution approach has been applied to optimal location of fasteners such as T-shape, L-shape and multi-component connection system. From the results, it was verified that the number of iteration was reduced, and the optimal topology was obtained very similarly comparing with ESO method. Therefore, it can be concluded that the density distribution method is very suitable for topology optimization of multi-component structures.

  • In the literature the problem of the topology optimization of the structure is usually solved for one, clearly described from the mechanical point of view material. Generally the topology optimization answers the question of the distribution of this mentioned above material within the design domain. Finally, material-voids distribution it is obtained. In this paper, for the structure mainly strengthened or sometimes weakened by the inclusions, the variation approach of the topology optimization problem is formulated. This multi material approach may be useful for the design process of various mechanical or civil engineering structures which need to be more "refined" and more "optimal" than they can be using previous topology optimization procedures of optimization one material structures.

  • The latest developments in topology optimization are integrated with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the conceptual design of building structures. The wind load on a building is simulated using CFD, and the structural response of the building is obtained from finite element analysis under the wind load obtained. Multiple wind directions are simulated within a single fluid domain by simply expanding the simulation domain. The bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) algorithm with a scheme of material interpolation is extended for an automatic building topology optimization considering multiple wind loading cases. The proposed approach is demonstrated by a series of examples of optimum topology design of perimeter bracing systems of high-rise building structures.

  • This study numerically compares optimum solutions generated by element- and node-wise topology optimization designs for free vibration structures, where element-and node-wise denote the use of element and nodal densities as design parameters, respectively. For static problems optimal solution comparisons of the two types for topology optimization designs have already been introduced by the author and many other researchers, and the static structural design is very common. In dynamic topology optimization problems the objective is in general related to maximum Eigenfrequency optimization subject to a given material limit since structures with a high fundamental frequency tend to be reasonable stiff for static loads. Numerical applications topologically maximizing the first natural Eigenfrequency verify the difference of solutions between element-and node-wise topology optimum designs.

  • A topology optimization methodology, named "smooth boundary topology optimization," is proposed to overcome the shortcomings of cell-based methods. Material boundary is represented by B-spline curves and their control points are considered as design variables. The design is improved by either creating a hole or moving control points. To determine which is more beneficial, a selection criterion is defined. Once determined to create a hole, it is represented by a new B-spline and recognized as a new boundary. Because the proposed method deals with the control points of B-spline as design variables, their total number is much smaller than cell-based methods and it ensures smooth boundaries. Differences between our method and level set method are also discussed. It is shown that our method is a natural way of obtaining smooth boundary topology design effectively combining computer graphics technique and design sensitivity analysis.

  • Electric-thermal-structural actuated compliant mechanisms are mechanisms onto which electric voltage drop is applied as input instead of force. This mechanism is based on thermal expansion of material while being heated. Compliant mechanisms are designed subjected to electric charge input using BESO(bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization) method. Reliability-based topology optimization (RBTO) is applied to the topology design of actuators. performance measure approach (PMA), which has probabilistic constraints that are formulated in terms of the reliability index, is adopted to evaluate the probabilistic constraints. In this study, BESO method is used to obtain optimal topology of compliant mechanisms from initial design domain. PMA approach is used to evaluate reliability index. The procedure has been tested in numerical applications and compared with the results obtained by other methods to validate these approaches.

  • Topology optimization of improved passive shock isolator by controlling its force-deflection relation is proposed. And the final design which is optimized using topology optimization is obtained using shape optimization. The proposed methods are applied to a numerical example using two dimensional-axisymmetric condition. And the performance of finally optimized design is verified through transient analysis using LS-DYNA. The ballistic shock isolator model is developed as a result of topology optimization. The optimized design has more improved shock absorbing capability comparing to the linear shock isolator by about 20%.

  • This paper presents the application of topology optimization as a design tool for a steel railway bridge. The choice of a steel railway bridge is dictated by the particular situation that it is suitable for topology optimization design. On the one hand, the current manufacturing techniques for steel structures (additive manufacturing techniques not included) are highly appropriate for material optimization and weight reduction to improve the overall structural efficiency, improve production efficiency, and reduce costs. On the other hand, the design of a railway bridge, especially at higher speeds, is dominated by minimizing the deformations, this being the basic principle of compliance optimization. However, a classical strategy of topology optimization considers typically only one or a very limited number of load cases, while the design of a steel railway bridge is characterized by relatively concentrated convoy loads, which may be present or absent at any location of the structure. The paper demonstrates the applicability of considering multiple load configurations during topology optimization and proves that a different and better optimal layout is obtained than the one from the classical strategy.

  • Topology design optimization is a method to determine the optimal distribution of material that yields the minimal compliance of structures, satisfying the constraint of allowable material volume. The method is easy to implement and widely used so that it becomes a powerful design tool in various disciplines. In this paper, a large-scale topology design optimization method is developed using the efficient adjoint sensitivity and optimality criteria methods. Parallel computing technique is required for the efficient topology optimization as well as the precise analysis of large-scale problems. Parallelized finite element analysis consists of the domain decomposition and the boundary communication. The preconditioned conjugate gradient method is employed for the analysis of decomposed sub-domains. The developed parallel computing method in topology optimization is utilized to determine the optimal structural layout of human powered vessel.
