Objective : To investigate the prevalence of dental anomalies and to determine the associations between dental anomalies in permanent teeth Materials and methods : The samples were 1,240 patients (760 females and 480 males, mean age=15.1 years) who visited the Samsung Medical Center. Dental anomalies were diagnosed using pre-treatment dental casts, radiographs, clinical examinations, and medical/dental histories. Prevalence and association were investigated according to gender and sidedness. The Chi-square test was performed for statistical analysis. Results : The most common missing tooth was the lower lateral incisor, followed by the lower and upper second premolars. This particular dental anomaly is characteristic of the East Asian population (prevalence of congenital missing tooth=12.3%). The upper anterior area was the most frequently affected area (prevalence of supernumerary tooth was 1.5%). The presence of a supernumerary tooth was more prevalent in males than in females (p<.05, odds ratio=3.2). The most frequently affected tooth was the upper canine (prevalence of impacted tooth=4.3%). Unilateral impaction of the upper canine occurred significantly more often compared to bilateral impaction (p<.001). The prevalence of peg lateralis was 2.7%. The presence of congenital missing tooth was closely associated with peg lateralis (p<.01). If children aged 7~8 years have peg lateralis, the rest of the teeth should be checked for congenital absences. Conclusion : The early detection of dental anomalies and understanding of their associations help clinicians determine the appropriate treatment timing and methods of dealing with these anomalies.
Complete understanding of the exterior and interior structure of the tooth would be prerequisite to the successful clinical results, especially in the restorative and endodontic treatment. Although three-dimensional reconstruction method using x-ray microtomography could not be used in clinical cases, it may be the best way to reconstruct the morphologic characteristics of the tooth structure in detail without destructing the tooth itself. This study was done to three dimensionally reconstruct every teeth in the arch in order to increase the understanding about the endodontic treatment and to promote the effective restorative treatment by upgrading the knowledge of the tooth morphology. After placing tooth between the microfocus x-ray tube and the image intensifier to obtain two-dimensional images of each level. scanning was done under the condition of 80 keV, $100{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$, 16.8 magnification with the spot size of $8{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$. Cross-section pixel size of $16.28{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ and 48.83 cross-section to cross-section distance were also used. From the results of this study, precise three dimensional reconstructed images of every teeth could be obtained. Furthermore, it was possible to see image that showed interested area only, for example. enamel portion only, pulp and dentin area without enamel structure, pulp only, combination image of enamel and pulp, etc. It was also possible to see transparent image without some part of tooth structure. This image might be used as a guide when restoring and preparing the full and partial crown by showing the positional and morphological relationship between the pulp and the outer tooth structure. Another profit may be related with the fact that it would promote the understanding of the interior structure by making observation of the auto-rotating image of AVI file from the various direction possible.
Thin labial plate will be resorbed after extraction. Immediate implantation cannot prevent soft and hard tissue loss. Bone graft can be necessary in the immediate implantation after anterior tooth extraction. Slowly-resorbed or non-resorbable bone graft material have many advantages in esthetic area because of maintenance of volume. The clinicians should select the adequate cases of immediate implantation according to the indication and contraindication.
As the interest for esthetic restoration is increasing, the usage of composite resin is increasing. The usage of composite resin is not limited to anterior teeth but is spreading to posterior area using direct & indirect methods. Generally, dual or chemical cure resin cement has been used for setting composite or porcelain inlay restoration. However, chemical cure resin cement has limited working time and it's difficult to remove excess cement from the tooth and the restoration. The dual cured composite is also difficult to remove from the tooth surface.(omitted)
The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the stress distribution and displacement developed in the abutment teeth and residual ridge area by madibular unilateral distal extension removable partial denture with 2 different retainer designs. The retainers on right and left canine and right 2nd molar were Alters clasp in one model and telescopic crown in the other model. The stress distribution of abutment teeth and residual ridge area on two model were compared and analyzed with 3-dimensional finite element method. 150N and 400N forces were applied vertically, 30 degree and horizontally on the central fossa area of left 1st molar of the removable partial denture, and then stress distribution patterns were analyzed and compared. The results were as follows 1. As the magnitude and angulation of applied force were increased, the magnitude of stress on the right and central residual ridge area and the right canine of the telescopic type increased and comparing to those of the Alters clasp type. 2. As the magnitude and angulation of applied force were increased, the mesial direction of displacement on the right residual ridge area and the right tooth of the telescopic type increased and the distal direction of displacement on left residual ridge area and the left canine increased comparing to those of Akers clasp type. 3. As the vertical force was applied, the distal direction of the displacement of the right tooth were greater and that of the left canine was smaller and the upward displacement of the right canine was greater in telescopic partial denture than those of Akers clasp type. 4. As the 30 degree force was applied, the mesial direction of the displacement of the right tooth were greater and the distal direction of the displacement of the left canine was smaller and the upward displacement of the right canine was greater in telescopic partial denture than those of Akers clasp type. In the horizontal force the results were same in right area tooth but the distal direction of displacement was greater in left canine. 5. In both removable partial dentures, as the magnitude and degree of force were increased, the stress and displacement were increased. The compressive force was dominative than the ten sile force. 6. In both removable partial dentures, the magnitude of stress was greater on mucosal tissue area than that of the alveolar bone area on distal extension residual ridge area but the result was reversed on anterior residual ridge area. The displacement was always greater on mucosal tissue area than that of alveolar bone area.

In cases of severe alveolar bone atrophy in the posterior maxillary area, which has only a thin sinus floor, the autogenous tooth bone graft block (ABTB) was used to wrap the implant to enhance its primary stability and osseointegration in the sinus. These cases with four years of clinical follow-up demonstrate the applicability of the ABTB in maxillary sinus membrane elevation to improve the outcomes of implant placement.
Gear is an essential component of an automotive. Crowning is used for tooth modification of a gear. The basic concept of gear tooth crowning is to reduce the stress concentration in edge of contact area and appropriate profile modifications can help gears to resist scoring, pitting, and tooth breakage. In this study, a method to determinate spur gear tooth crowning amount to make smooth surface stress and subsurface stress distribution is proposed. This method is based on the contact analysis.

To properly prepare teeth, dentists require a direct view of the working area and are often placed in a difficult position, moreover, a high proportion of dentists suffer from headache and back pain. Dentists who make use of the dental mirror and position their patients carefully to gain a proper view report less headache, pain and discomfort in the shoulders. It is recommended that dentists learn the "Home Position(H.P.)" which among the various "Random Position(R.P.)" methods, enables dentists to approach their patients in a stable posture. The purpose of this study was to compare tooth preparation in the H.P. and the R.P., and evaluate the clinical efficacy of the H.P.. Tooth preparation for a full cast crown was performed on the maxillary left 1st molar using the H.P. and the R.P., and the shapes of the prepared tooth surfaces at the two different operating positions were compared. The amount of occlusal reduction, marginal width, height, and axial taper were measured and analyzed. A T-test was performed separately to compare the results of the H.P. and the R.P. with respect to the accuracy of the corresponding tooth reduction. The results were as follows. ; 1. The amount of occlusal reduction was excessive on the mesiobuccal cusp(P<0.05), and deficient on the lingual cusp in the H.P.(P<0.01). In the R.P., this was excessive on the buccal cusp and deficient on the fossa and distolingual cusp(P<0.01). 2. The amounts of marginal width were excessive in all areas except on the lingual and mesial surfaces in the H.P. and lingual surface in the R.P.(P<0.01). 3. The marginal heights were achieved more accurately in the R.P. than the H.P.(P<0.01). 4. Axial surface taper was excessive in all areas in the H.P.(P<0.01). But the axial taper of measured areas was even, and tooth is more like to retain its original axis after reduction. In the R.P., axial surface taper was excessive on the mesial and buccal area, and deficient on the distolingual area(P<0.01), and therefore, the axis of the prepared teeth was tipped in the distolingual direction. 5. The times needed for preparation were 12 minutes and 49 seconds in the H.P., and 11 minutes and 35 seconds in the R.P., and the R.P. was statistically faster(P<0.01). The tooth preparation in the H.P. achieved its goal, in that it enabled the operator to make even tooth reduction. In conclusion, the H.P. system offers an improved method that can be used in clinic after specific training.

Supernumerary teeth are dental abnormalies in the permanent dentition and the primary dentition. The etiology is unclear, but it may occur due to dichotomy of the tooth bud or hyperactivity of dental lamina. They occur more in the permanent dentition than in the primary dentition, with the most common site being the premaxillary area. Supernumerary teeth can be classified by morphology and position. Supplemental tooth refers to normal shape tooth. The treatment of supernumerary teeth depends on its shape, position, effect on dentition, and child's physiological condition. In this case, supernumerary primary tooth in the maxillary molar area was revealed by radiographical and clinical examination, but it was difficult to determine which is the supernumerary tooth. The tooth on the mesial side was extracted to induce the formation of adequate space and to prevent excessive space loss, and the result was favorable.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine proper position and angulation of an implant for immediate implantation. Materials and Method : From the years 1997 to 2000. 52 Denta $scan^R$ views, 22 upper and 32 lower jaw with an average age of 43 and 40 respectively, were investigated, which comprise intact upper and lower 6 anterior teeth and premolars. On the Denta $scan^R$, the optimal placement for the immediated implantation was simulated. The measuring methods included 1) Angulation difference between tooth long axis and alveolar bone process. 2) Angulation difference of long axis between tooth and installing fixture 3) Distance between center of tooth at cervical area and center of fixture. 4) Distance from root apex to the bone limit of vital structure. One sample t-test was used for statistical analysis. Result : The results were as follows. 1) At the maxillary central incisor and lateral incisor, angulation difference of long axis between tooth and installing fixture was respectively 0.5 and 3.2 degrees with the fixture center's palatally positioned 2mm apart from tooth center. 2) At the lower anterior 6 teeth, that was about $-2.8^{\circ}\;to\;-4.6^{\circ}$ with the fixture center's lingually positioned 1mm apart from tooth center. 3) At the maxillary canine and premolar, that was respectively $11.8^{\circ}\;and \;7.2^{\circ}$ with the fixture center palatally positioned $2\sim2.4mm$ apart from tooth center. 4) At the lower premolar area, that was about $0^{\circ}\;to\;2^{\circ}$ with the fixture center's lingually positioned $0.5{\sim}1mm$ apart from tooth center. 5) Distance from root apex to the bone limit of vital structure, at the maxillary anterior and premolars. was the range of 10 to 12mm, and at the mandibular anterior teeth and the 1st premolar, that was the range of 18 to 20mm. Conclusion : The proper implant position of maxillary anterior and premolar teeth is as paralleled as or more buccally angulated than long axis of tooth with the fixture center's palatally positioned. In mandiblular anterior region, long axis of implants is lingully angulated compared with long axis of tooth and in premolar, almost parelleled with long axis of tooth and alveolar process.
