Planetary gear design is complex because it involves a combination of discrete variables such as module, integer variables such as the number of teeth, and continuous variables such as face width and aspect ratio. Thus, an optimum design technique is needed. In this study, we applied a genetic algorithm to the design optimization of a planetary gear. In this algorithm, tooth root strength and surface durability are assessed with fundamental variables such as the number of teeth, module, pressure angle, and face width. With the help of this technique, gear designers could reduce trial and error in the initial design stages, thus cutting the time required for planetary gear design.
The end products of the metabolism of the oral microorganism, organic acids, are an element that produces dental caries. Four organic acids in plaque fluid, lactic acid, acetic acid, succinic acid, propionic acid which take the important role in producing dental caries, were chosen to evaluate the effect of acid type and concentration. The subject, $100{\mu}m$ in thickness, were immersed in acid-buffer solution which has the different acid concentration of 10mM, 25mM, 50mM, 100mM and pH 4.3 and degree of saturation was $0.153{\pm}0.003$ kept in constant and were operated to produce artificial caries under different demineralization time (1, 2, 3 day) at x25. The results were obtained by observing under polarizing microscope at x25. 1. The subsurface lesion, specific finding of incipient enamel caries, showed positive birefringence. but surface zone and sound enamel showed negative birefringence. 2. The demineralization rate of enamel was increased as the acid concentration increased. 3. The subsurface lesion showed increasing depth in the order of lactic, acetic, propionic acid, succinic acid. 4. The concentration of organic acid in artificial caries system had an independent effect on demineralization rate in enamel under the constant pH and degree of saturation. The result of this study showed that not only pH and the acid strength but the concentration of organic acid had an independent effect on demineralization rate in early enamel caries. And through the further research on the factors influencing enamel demineralization, it will be necessary to develop an effective caries preventive therapy.
Objectives: Some antioxidants are believed to restore dentin bond strength after dental bleaching. This study was done to evaluate the influence of antioxidants on the bond strength of bleached bovine dentin. Materials and Methods: Thirty incisors were randomly assigned to 10 groups (two unbleached control and eight bleached groups:immediate bonding IB, 4 wk delayed bonding DB, 10% sodium ascorbate treated SA, 10% ${\alpha}$-tocopherol treated TP groups). Teeth in half of groups were subjected to thermal stress, whereas the remaining groups were not. Resin-dentin rods with a cross-sectional area of $2.25mm^2$ were obtained and microtensile bond strength was determined at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Fifteen specimens were prepared for SEM to compare the surface characteristics of each group. The change in dentin bond strength from thermal stress and antioxidant treatment was evaluated using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Sheffe's post hoc test at a significance level of 95%. Results: The control group exhibited the highest bond strength values, whereas IB group showed the lowest value before and after thermocycling. The DB group recovered its bond strength similar to that of the control group. The SA and TP groups exhibited similar bond strength values with those of the control and DB groups before thermocycling. However, The TP group did not maintain bond strength with thermal stress, whereas the SA group did. Conclusions: Applying a 10% sodium ascorbate solution rather than 10% ${\alpha}$-tocopherol solution for 60 sec is recommended to maintain dentin bond strength when restoring non-vitally bleached teeth.

In this paper, the mechanism that can walk efficiently in wet land or sand area is proposed. A vision camera is attached to the mechanism, which makes a kind of biologically inspired robot for coast guard. This visionary information enables the biologically inspired robot to react in peripheral environment by a soft-computing algorithm. In addition, the biologically inspired robot can achieve the mission appointed by a programmer connecting with outside, based on RF and Blue-tooth communication module. Therefore, the purpose of this research is the implementation of the biologically inspired robot that can operate most adaptively in sand and wet surface based on Theo Jansen mechanism.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical behavior and long-term safety of high performance polymer PEKK as an intraradicular dental post-core material through comparative finite element analysis (FEA) with other conventional post-core materials. A 3D FEA model of a maxillary central incisor was constructed. A cyclic loading force of 50 N was applied at an angle of $45^{\circ}$ to the longitudinal axis of the tooth at the palatal surface of the crown. For comparison with traditionally used post-core materials, three materials (gold, fiberglass, and PEKK) were simulated to determine their post-core properties. PEKK, with a lower elastic modulus than root dentin, showed comparably high failure resistance and a more favorable stress distribution than conventional post-core material. However, the PEKK post-core system showed a higher probability of debonding and crown failure under long-term cyclic loading than the metal or fiberglass post-core systems.
The main cause of oral disease is the formation of tooth surface bacteria, and a chemical mouthwash is used as a suppression method. However, chemical preparations have side effects, so we tried to verify the antibacterial effect of bamboo extract against oral microbes. Subjects were 15 college students as a control group and an experimental group, and the changes in oral microbes before and after the use of distilled water and bamboo extract were compared. Analysis of SPSS Windows ver. 20.0 was used (p<0.05). Results The total number of pathogenic microorganisms further decreased after using bamboo extract solution after using gargling solution between groups.

Purpose: This study introduces a standardized 2-plane approach using 8 landmarks to assess alveolar bone levels in mice using micro-computed tomography. Materials and Methods: Bone level differences were described as distance from the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) to alveolar bone crest (ABC) and as percentages of vertical bone height and vertical bone loss, comparing mice infected with Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) to controls. Eight measurements were obtained per tooth: 2 in the sagittal plane (mesial and distal) and 6 in the coronal plane (mesiobuccal, middle-buccal, distobuccal, mesiolingual, middle-lingual, and distolingual). Results: Significant differences in the CEJ-to-ABC distance between Pg-infected mice and controls were found in the coronal plane (middle-lingual, mesiobuccal, and distolingual for the first molar; and mesiobuccal, middle-buccal, and distolingual for the second molar). In the sagittal plane, the distal measurement of the second molar was different. The middle-buccal, mesiobuccal, and distolingual sites of the first and second molars showed vertical bone loss relative to controls; the second molar middle-lingual site was also different. In the sagittal plane, the mesial sites of the first and second molars and the distal site of the second molar showed loss. Significantly different vertical bone height percentages were found for the mesial and distal sites of the second molar (sagittal plane) and the middle-lingual and distolingual sites of the first molar(coronal plane). Conclusion: A reliable, standardized technique for linear periodontal assessments in mice is described. Alveolar bone loss occurred mostly on the lingual surface of the coronal plane, which is often omitted in studies.
This study aimed to qualitative analyze the cusp variation pattern of the mandibular second premolars using a three-dimensional virtual models, and to analyze the left-right bilateral symmetry with a quantitative analysis of the tooth surface area according to the cusp variation. 127 virtual mandibular second premolars were prepared and individual absolute/relative cusp area, total crown area and groove form were analyzed using RapidForm2004(INUS technology INC, Seoul, Korea). Independent t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test and chi-square were performed. As a result, the groove form showed high bilateral symmetry between the left and right sides. Based on the left side of groove form, the bilateral symmetry was 100.0% for the U pattern, and 73.7% for the H patterned, and 78.9% for the Y pattern(p<.001). The finding could be as a meaningful reference for manufacturing CAD/CAM dental prostheses, and it is expected that further studies will be conducted on more samples including the mandibular second premolar immediately after eruption.

Purpose: This study evaluated the efficacy of treating periodontitis using subgingival nano-hydroxyapatite powder with an air abrasion device (NHAPA) combined with scaling and root planing (SRP). Methods: A total of 28 patients with stage III periodontitis (grade B) were included in this study, although 1 was lost during follow-up and 3 used antibiotics. The patients were divided into a test group and a control group. All patients first received whole-mouth SRP using hand instruments, and a split-mouth approach was used for the second treatment. In the test group, the teeth were treated with NHAPA for 15 seconds at 70% power per pocket. Subgingival plaque samples were obtained from the 2 deepest pockets at the test and control sites before treatment (baseline) and 3 months after treatment. The full-mouth plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), papillary bleeding index (PBI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) were recorded at baseline and at 1- and 3-month post-treatment. Real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to determine the colonisation of Treponema denticola (Td), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in the subgingival plaque. Results: From baseline to the first month, the test group showed significantly larger changes in BOP and CAL (43.705%±27.495% and 1.160±0.747 mm, respectively) than the control group (36.311%±27.599% and 0.947±0.635 mm, respectively). Periodontal parameters had improved in both groups at 3 months. The reductions of PI, GI, BOP, PD, and CAL in the test group at 3 months were greater and statistically significant. The total bacterial count and Td and Pg species had decreased significantly by the third month in both groups (P<0.05). Conclusions: Applying NHAPA in addition to SRP improves clinical periodontal parameters more than SRP alone. Subgingival NHAPA may encourage clot adhesion to tooth surfaces by increasing surface wettability.
