  • Geophysical investigations, as a non-invasive method, were conducted at the former gas station site contaminated with fuel hydrocarbons. GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) survey was performed to locate buried objects such as USTs (Underground Storage Tanks) and fuel pipes which might serve as a origin of the site contamination. Additional GPR investigation and a resistivity survey were conducted to map water table and to characterize shallow geologic structures of the site. The results of the study have shown that seven USTs including one unknown UST and buried fuel pipes are present, and that the groundwater elevation varies with topography from approximately 1.5 to 3m below the surface and the water table is located in the residual soils above the bedrock in the site. The results also show that the geophysical methods can be a very useful tool for the characterization of the contaminated site.

  • This paper presents a network capacity model that can be used as an analytical tool for strategic planning and resource allocation for multimodal transportation systems. In the context of freight transportation, the multimodal network capacity problem (MNCP) is formulated as a mathematical model of nonlinear bi-level optimization problem. Given network configuration and freight demand for multiple origin-destination pairs, the MNCP model is designed to determine the maximum flow that the network can accommodate. To solve the MNCP, a heuristic solution algorithm is developed on the basis of a linear approximation method. A hypothetical exercise shows that the MNCP model and solution algorithm can be successfully implemented and applied to not only estimate the capacity of multimodal network, but also to identify the capacity gaps over all individual facilities in the network, including intermodal facilities. Transportation agencies and planners would benefit from the MNCP model in identifying investment priorities and thus developing sustainable transportation systems in a manner that considers all feasible modes as well as low-cost capacity improvements.

  • Sequences from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA were determined to assess their potential as a phylogenetic tool for Korean Acer species, including A. okamotoannum and A. takesimense which are endemic on Ullung Island of volcanic origin. Although the genus Acer has been studied by various authors, different infrageneric dispositions have been suggested, and the phylogeny of the genus has been in dispute. The variation of ITS sequences from seven species of Acer was very low among species within the same section, but comparative analysesof the molecular data obtained suggest that ITS sequences may provide enough phylogenetic resolution for sectional relationships in the genus.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the possibility of adopting beacons to implement the fire evacuation guidance system in order to reduce the evacuation time for a fire in complex buildings. A beacon-based evacuation system can quickly detect a fire's origin, optimal path of evacuation involved with the exits and the location of evacuees using information collected by the proposed system. The assessment is conducted by integrating different scenario models including fire simulation. Based on the research result, beacon is an effective tool to warn potential hazards or to provide early detection and a safe escape.

  • O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) is an abundant posttranslationally modified compound in eukaryotic cells. Human O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) was produced as a maltose binding protein (MBP) fusion protein, which showed significant catalytic activity to modify recombinant Sp1, transcription factor. To facilitate the production of O-GlcNAc modified proteins, instead of using the tedious in vitro glycosylation reaction or expression in eukaryotic cells, a MBP-fusion OGT expression vector (pACYC184-MBPOGT) was constructed using pACYC184 plasmid, which could coexist with general prokaryotic expression vectors containing ColE1 origin. By cotransforming pACYC184-MBPOGT and pGEX-2T vectors into Escherichia coli BL21, intracellular O- GlcNAcylated proteins could be obtained by a simple purification procedure. It is expected that this may be a useful tool for production of O-GlcNAc modified proteins.

  • This paper deals with the trajectory tracking control of wheeled mobile robots with input constraint. The proposed method converts the trajectory tracking problem to the system stability problem using the control inputs composed of feedforward and feedback terms, and then, by using Taylor series, nonlinear terms in origin system are transformed into polynomial equations. The composed system model can make it possible to obtain the control inputs using numerical tool named as SOSTOOL. From the simulation results, the mobile robot can track the reference trajectory well and can have faster convergence rate of the trajectory errors than the existing nonlinear control method. By using the proposed method, we can easily obtain the control input for nonlinear systems with input constraint.

  • Preliminary studies on the seasonal variations in abundance of stable isotopes were carried out on the snow and rainwater samples from urban area. Stable isotopes and other geochemical data as a tool for characterizing the seasonality and source of pollutants were examined in study areas, especially to trace the sources of sulfate in precipitation and to distinguish sulfates of natural and anthropogenic origin. • In knowledge information society entering global unlimited competition era, our middle and small sized companies are the base of national and enterprise competitiveness and core base of national economy as an origin of jobs. The competitiveness of middle and small sized companies is so important to decide the level of the competitiveness of the whole industries, but the gap from big sized company is much low in comparison with advanced countries from angles of important factors of enterprise growth, productivity and technological competitiveness, so, it's urgent to improve the competitiveness through productivity enhancement. The purpose of this research is to do a positive study on effects of learning organization management outcomes of middle and small sized company on enterprise productivity among various types of outcome brought for strengthening of enterprise competitiveness. It confirmed learning organization has functions and usefulness as a management tool bringing positive effects on enterprise productivity through the Productivity improvement.

  • We reviewed 45 cases of ovarian tumors treated at Seoul National University Children's Hospital from 1983 to 1993. Forty-five patients were operated upon for 52 ovarian tumors. The most common pathologic diagnosis was mature teratoma. The next were functional cyst, the tumors of epithelial cell origin, and those of stromal origin in order of frequency. Six patients(13%) had malignant tumor. There were one malignant teratoma, two dysgerminomas, one endodermal sinus tumor, and two granulosa cell tumors. Four cases were diagnosed as torsion of ovarian cyst preoperatively, and emergency exploratory laparotomy were performed. There were three cases of ovarian tumors associated with precocious puberty. The most widely used diagnostic tool was ultrasonography. In the treatment of these 45 patients, unilateral oophorectomy was done in 38 cases, unilateral oophorectomy with wedge resection of contralateral ovary was done in 5 cases, unilateral oophorectomy with contralateral simple cystectomy was done in one case and total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingooophorectomy was done in one case. Of the six cases of malignancy, five patients are alive 2 to 6 years after operation and one case was lost to be followed up.

  • Lysozyme amounts to 0.3% in egg white and functions as an agent of cell lysis and activator of tissue reconstruction. Ion exchange chromatography is the most useful method of separation among affinity chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, and ultra-filtration. The aim of present study is to find the optimum pH and temperature for the separation of lysozyme in egg white within cation exchange gel filled glass column. And we compared results of experiments with those of simulations. Phosphate buffer was used, and pH and temperature were varied as 5~7 and $25{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ respectively. RP-HPLC was the tool for the retention time identification and quantitative analysis of lysozyme. OriginPro 8 measured the peak area of lysozyme chromatogram and quantified the eluted lysozyme. Largest amount of lysozyme was separated under the conditions of pH 5 and T $25^{\circ}C$.
