Development of titanium alloy engine parts (티타늄합금 엔진부품개발)

  • 티타늄합금을 사용하여 흡기밸브, 배기밸브, 밸브스프링 리테이너를 시제작하였다. FEM 구조해석결과와 모터링 내구실험결과를 통해 이들 부품들이 신뢰성을 가지는 것으로 판명되었다. 엔진성능실험을 통해서 고속영역에서 엔진출력 및 토오크가 3-4% 향상되었다. 단 향후 엔진내구실험을 통하여 충분한 내구성검증이 필요하다고 판단된다.

Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Resistance of CP-Ti and Ti Alloy for Dental Implants (인공치근용 CP-Ti과 Ti 합금의 기계적 성질 및 내식성)

  • Commercially pure titanium(cp-Ti) and Ti-15wt%Zr-4wt%Nb-4wt%Ta alloy were melted in vacuum induction furnace. According to the chemical analysis, the content of carbon was above ASTM standard in the cast ingots because of using graphite crucible. The TEM micostructures of cp-Ti and Ti alloy shows that chemically stable TiC precipitates distribute in ${\alpha}-Ti$ matrix. In order to examine the properties of cp-Ti and Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta alloy for dental applications, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance were investigated. The anodic polarization properties of Ti-Zr-Nb-Zr alloy were almost same as that of cp-Ti in 1% lactic acid. However, as the results of the anodic polarization test in 5% HCl, it was known that Ti-Zr-Nb-Zr alloy showed a rapid decrease in current density at higher potential in comparison with cp-Ti. The yield stress and tensile strengh in Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta were ${\sigma}_{0.2}=623\;MPa$, ${\sigma}_{T.S.}=708\;MPa$ and these results showed 30% increase in yield stress in comparison with cp-Ti.

Effect of Alloy Addition (Ta, Nb) on Oxidation Behavior of cp-Ti for Biomaterials (생체용 Ti합금의 산화거동에 미치는 Ta 및 Nb 첨가의 영향)

  • The oxidation behaviors of Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy and Ti-6Al-4V alloy were studied in dry air atmosphere. Specimens were melted in consumable vacuum arc furnace and homogenized at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. Hot rolling was performed at $1000^{\circ}C$. Specimens of the alloys were oxidized as the temperature range $400~650^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The oxidation behavior of the alloys was analysed by optical microscope, SEM/EDX, XRD, XPS and TGA. Immersion test was performed in 1% Lactic acid. In the microscope observation, oxide layer of Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy was denser and thinner than Ti-6Al-4V's. The weight gains during the oxidation rapidly increased at the temperature above $600^{\circ}C$ in Ti-6Al-4V's alloy and$ 700^{\circ}C$ in Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy. According to XRD results, oxide layers were composed of mostly $TiO_2$(rutile) phase. It was analysed that the passive film of the Ti alloys consisted of $TiO_2$ through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) analysis.

Optimization for Friction Welding of AZ31 Mg Alloy by Design of Experiments (실험계획법에 의한 AZ31마그네슘합금의 마찰접합시 최적공정설계)

  • Magnesium alloy has been known as lightweight material in automobile and electronic industry with aluminum alloy, titanium alloy and plastic material. Friction welding is useful to join different kinds of metals and nonferrous metals they are difficult to be joined by such as gas welding, resistance welding and electronic beam welding. In this study, friction welding was performed to investigate optimization process of Mg alloy with a 20mm diameter solid bar. For that, the orthogonal array $(L_{9}(3^{4}))$ was used that contained four factors and each factor had three levels. Control factors were heating pressure, heating time, upsetting pressure and upsetting time. Also tensile tests were carried out to measure mechanical properties for welded conditions. The levels of heating pressure and upsetting pressure used were 15, 25, 35MPa, and 30, 50, 70MPa, respectively. In addition those of heating time and upsetting time were 0.5, 1, 1.5 sec and 3, 4, 5 sec., respectively, rotating speed of 2000rpm. From the experimental results, optimization condition was estimated as follows; heating pressure=35MPa, upsetting pressure=70MPa, heating time=1.5sec, upsetting time=3sec.

A study on microstruture and corrosion resistance of Ti-Nb alloys by hot rolling (열간압연에 의한 Ti-Nb계 합금의 미세조직 및 내식성에 대한 연구)

  • Pure titanium and Ti6Al4V alloy have been mainly used as implant materials but the cytotoxicity of V, neurotoxicity of Al resulting in Alzheimer disease had been reported. This paper was described the influence of composition of Ti-Nb alloys with 3 wt%Nb, 20 wt%Nb on the microstructure and corrosion resistance. Specimens of Ti alloys were melted in vacuum arc furnace and homogenized at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 24hr. The alloys were rolled in $\beta$ and ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ regions. The corrosion resistance of Ti alloys were evaluated by potentiodymic polarization test in 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCl solutions. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The microstructure was transformed from $\alpha$ phase to ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase by adding Nb 2. The hardness of Ti-20Nb alloy was greater than Cp- Ti, Ti-3Nb alloy. 3. The corrosion resistance of Ti-20Nb alloy was better than that of Cp-Ti, Ti-3Nb alloy in 0.9%NaCl and 5%HCl solutions.

Mechanical Properties of Friction Joint of AZ31Mg Alloy (AZ31마그네슘합금의 마찰접합특성)

  • Magnesium alloy has been known as lightweight material in automobile and electronic industry with aluminum alloy, titanium alloy and plastic material. Friction welding is useful to join various metals and nonferrous metals that are difficult to join by such as gas welding, resistance welding and electronic beam welding. In this study, friction joining was performed to investigate mechanical properties of Mg alloy with 20mm diameter solid bar. Also the optimal joining conditions for its application were determined on the basis of tensile test, and hardness survey. The joining parameters were chosen as heating pressure, heating time, upsetting pressure, and upsetting time. Heating and upsetting pressure were executed under the range of 10~40MPa and 20~80MPa, respectively. From the experimental results, optimal joining conditions were determined as follows; rotating speed=2000rpm, heating pressure=35MPa, upsetting pressure=70MPa, heating time=1sec, upsetting time=5sec. Also the hardness of jointed boundary showed as HV50 which was similar to that of base metal at the optimal condition, and it was supposed that zone of HAZ was 8mm. Finally two materials were strongly mixed at interface part to show a well-combined microstructure without particle growth or any defect.
