Implant-supported fixed and removable prostheses provide a proper treatment modality with reliable success. The SS $II^{(R)}$ Implants is a one-stage nonsubmerged threaded titanium implants with Resorbable Blasting Media (RBM) surface developed by Osstem company (Busan, Korea) in October of 2002. This study is to evaluate the survival rate of the SS $II^{(R)}$ Implants for 4 years using radiographic parameters and to review the retrieved implants by the cytotoxicity tests. Since September 2003, 439 SS $II^{(R)}$ implants had been used for 173 patients at Ewha Womans University Medical Center in Korea. Patients consisted of 91 females (52.6 %) and 82 males (47.4 %). The patients' mean age was $42\;{\pm}16$ years, ranging from 21 to 83 years. The follow-up period ranged from 9 to 46 months (mean F/U $24.2\;{\pm}\;10.2$ months). The results are as follows; 1. Of 439 implants, 17 implants were removed and 4-year cumulative survival rate was 96.1%. 2. 82.3% of 17 failed implants were founded during healing phase, and 94.1% of failed fixtures were removed within 5 months after implantation. 3. Crestal bone around the implants was resorbed to 1 mm in 89.0%, to 1 - 2 mm loss of the marginal bone in 8.3%, and the bone loss over 2 mm was occurred in 2.7%. 4. Microscopic examination of the retrieved implants disclosed Grade 0 cytotoxicity in 4 and Grade 1 cytotoxicity in 2 of 6 groups divided according to LOT numbers. Inhibition rate with optical density was acceptable as low as ISO standard.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the histological and biomechanical characteristics of self-tapping and self-drilling microscrew implants. Methods: 112 microscrew implants (56 self-drilling and 56 self-tapping) were placed into the tibia of 28 rabbits. The implants were loaded immediately with no force, light (100 gm), or heavy force (200 gm) with nickel-titanium coil springs. The animals were sacrificed at 3- and 5-weeks after placement and histologic and histomorphometric analysis were performed under a microscope. Results: All microscrew implants stayed firm throughout the experiment. There was no significant difference between self-drilling and self-tapping microscrew implants both in peak insertion and removal torques. Histologic examinations showed there were more defects in the self-tapping than the self-drilling microscrew implants, and newly formed immature bone was increased at the interface in the self-tapping 5-week group. There was proliferation of bone towards the outer surface of the implant and/or toward the marrow space in the self-drilling group. Histologically, self-drilling microscrew implants provided more bone contact initially but the two methods became similar at 5 weeks. Conclusion: These results indicate the two methods can be used for microscrew implant placement, but when using self-tapping microscrew implants, it seems better to use light force in the early stages.

In knee implants, contact pressure has a significant effect on wear. In this study, finite element analysis is performed using the knee implant model developed in the previous research. The contact pressures for a total of 10 knee implant materials combinations were analyzed using the combinations actually used in research and industry. In order to calculate the contact pressure, The load was applied when the flection angle of knee was $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$. The result of contact pressure revealed the smallest contact pressure in the titanium alloy-UHMWPE combination. In the case of UHMWPE, contact pressure did not change much with any material used in the femur. Compared the combination with the largest contact pressure and the smallest contact pressure, the difference was 0.77%. On the other hand, Carbon / PEEK composites showed 5.3% difference when the contact pressure was the largest and the smallest. It can be seen that when the Carbon / PEEK composite material is used as the bearing part, the material of the femoral part affects the wear. This study will contribute to the prediction of knee implant wear and minimization of wear.

High sensitivity IR image sensors require materials characteristics with temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) and IR range absorption. In this study, the metal-dielectric thermo sensitive films (MDTF) based on $(SiO_2)_x-(Ti)_y$ composition were deposited on substrates of germanium and glass by thermal evaporator. The $SiO_2$ : Ti mixture was made from the ratio of 9 : 1, 8 : 2, 7 : 3, 6 : 4, respectively. $(SiO_2)_x-(Ti)_y$ mixture powder was loaded on tungsten boat in evaporator and was 15.5 cm from the substrate. Resistance of $(SiO_2)_x-(Ti)_y$ in the range of 273~333K were measured as a function of temperature. Temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) was calculated by the resistance variation. Under the various mixture ratios condition, it is possible to obtain $SiO_2$-Ti layers with resistance from units kilo-ohm to hundreds kilo-ohm. Finally, our results showed that Temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of these films varies from -1.4 to $-2.6%K^{-1}$.
Cyanide can be leached out from the cyanidation method which has been used to extract high-purity gold and silver from ores, and it becomes a variety of cyanide complexes associated with heavy metals contained in ores. Such cyanide complexes are considered as persistent and non-degradable pollutants which cause adverse effects on humans and surrounding environments. Based on binding force between heavy metals and cyanide, cyanide complexes can be categorized weak acid dissociable (WAD) and strong acid dissociable (SAD). This study comparatively evaluated the performance of photo-catalytic process with regard to forms of cyanide complexes. In particular, both effects of UV LED wavelength and surface modification of photo-catalyst on the removal efficiency of cyanide complexes were investigated in detail. The results indicate that the performance of photo-catalytic oxidation is significantly affected by the form of cyanide complexes. In addition, the effect of UV LED wavelength on the removal efficiency was quite different between free cyanide and cyanide complexes associated with heavy metals. The results support that the surface modification of photo-catalyst, such as doping can improve overall performance of photo-catalytic oxidation of cyanide complexes.
Background: Major amino acids in pig diets are Lys, Met, Thr, and Trp, but little is known about the requirements for the other essential amino acids, especially on odorous compounds and microbial characteristics in feces of growing-finishing pigs. To this end, different levels of amino acid composition added to diets to investigate the effects of amino acid composition on microbial characteristics and odorous compounds concentration. Methods: A total eight (n = 8) barrows (Landrace ${\times}$ Yorkshire ${\times}$ Duroc) with an average bodyweight of $89.38{\pm}3.3kg$ were individually fed diets formulated by Korean Feeding Standards 2007 (old version) or 2012 (updated with ideal protein concept) in metabolism crates with two replication. After 15-day adaptation period, fresh faecal samples were collected directly from pigs every week for 4 weeks and analysed for total volatile fatty acids (VFA), phenols and indoles by using gas chromatography. The nitrogen was determined by Kjeldahl method. Bacterial communities were detected by using a 454 FLX titanium pyrosequencing system. Results: Level of VFA tended to be greater in 2012 than 2007 group. Among VFAs, 2012 group had greater (p < 0.05) level of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) than control.Concentration of odorous compounds in feces was also affected by amino acid composition in pig diet. Levels of ammonium and indoles tended to be higher in 2012 group when compared with 2007 group.Concentration of phenols, p-cresol, biochemical oxygen demand, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen, however, were lower (P < 0.05) in 2012 treatment group compare to 2007. The proportion of Firmicute phylum were decreased, while the Bacteriodetes phylum proportion increased and bacterial genera includingCoprococcus, Bacillus, and Bacteroides increased (p < 0.05) in 2012 compare to 2007 group. Conclusion: Results from our current study indicates that well balanced amino acid composition reduces odor by modulating the gut microbial community. Administration of pig diet formulated with the ideal protein concept may help improve gut fermentation as well as reduce the odor causing compounds in pig manure.

For several decades, industrial processes consume a huge amount of raw water for various objects that consequently results in the generation of large amounts of wastewater. Wastewaters are consisting of complex mixture of different inorganic and organic compounds and some of them can be toxic, hazardous and hard to degrade. These effluents are mainly treated by conventional technologies such are aerobic and anaerobic treatment and chemical coagulation. But, these processes are not suitable for eliminating all hazardous chemical compounds form wastewater and generate a large amount of toxic sludge. Therefore, other processes have been studied and applied together with these techniques to enhance purification results. These include photocatalysis, absorption, advanced oxidation processes, and ozonation, but also have their own drawbacks. In recent years, electrochemical techniques have received attention as wastewater treatment process that could be show higher purification results. Among them, boron doped diamond (BDD) attract attention as electrochemical electrode due to good chemical and electrochemical stability, long lifetime and wide potential window that necessary properties for anode electrode. So, there are many researches about high quality BDD on Nb, Ta, W and Si substrates, but, their application in effluents treatment is not suitable due to high cost of metal and low conductivity of Si. To solve these problems, Ti has been candidate as substrate in consideration of cost and property. But there are adhesion issues that must be overcome to apply Ti as BDD substrate. Al, Cu, Ti and Nb thin films were deposited on Ti substrate to improve adhesion between substrate and BDD thin film. In this paper, BDD films were deposited by hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HF-CVD) method. Prior to deposition, cleaning processes were conducted in acetone, ethanol, and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) using sonification machine for 7 min, respectively. And metal layer with the thickness of 200 nm were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering (DCMS). To analyze microstructure X-ray diffraction (XRD, Bruker gads) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM, Hitachi) were used. It is confirmed that metal layer was effective to adhesion property and improved electrode property. Electrochemical measurements were carried out in a three electrode electrochemical cell containing a 0.5 % H2SO4 in deionized water. As a result, it is confirmed that metal inter layer heavily effect on BDD property by improving adhesion property due to suppressing formation of titanium carbide.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of newly developed endodontic root canal cleanser (MTAD) on the apical leakage of obturated root canal using an electrochemical method. Canals of 60 extracted single-rooted human teeth were prepared by using a crown-down technique with rotary nickel-titanium files. In Group 1 (positive control group) and 2 (negative centre) group), 5.25% NaOCl was used as a canal irrigant and no canal wall treatment was done. In group 3 only 5.25% NaOCl were used as canal irrigant, canal wall treatment and final rinse. In group 4, specimens were irrigated with 5.25% NaOCl, treated with 5 ml of 17% EDTA for 5 minutes and final rinsed with 5.25% NaOCl Specimens of group 5 were irrigated with 1 3% NaOCl and treated with 5 ml of MTAD for 5 minutes. All root canals are dried with paper points and obtuated with gutta-percha and AH plus as a sealer using a continuous wave of condensation technique except in the group 1. The electrical resistance between the standard and experimental electrodes in canals was measured over a period of 10 days. Rising of apical leakage with time was observed for all the groups. Group 4 and 5 showed lower apical leakage than group 3 but differences between the group 3, 4 and 5 were no statistical significance at any measurement time.
A molecular orbital analysis based on the extended Huckel calculations has been carried out to study the OH bond activation of water on the $TiO_2$(110) surface. $H_2O$ binds with its axis perpendicular to the surfac on top of the five-coordinate $Ti^{4+}$ atom via its $3a_1$ orbital. In this bonding situation, the two-coordinated bridging $O^{2-}$ atom ($O_b$, basic site) on $TiO_2$(110) is too distant from an H atom of water to form hydrogen-bondig interactions with water that facilitate O-H bond cleavage. It has been elucidated that the O-H bond is appreciably weakened when the water molecule is tilted to give a hydrogen bond with the $O_b$ atom. This mechanism includes mutual transfer of electron density from the $3a_1$ orbital of the water molecule to the $Ti^{4+} 3d_{z2}$ orbital and from the $O_b$ P orbitals to the $2b_1$ of the adsorbed water molecule This should result in lengthening of the O-H bond in the surface complex and the subsequent dissociation into the fragments OH and H.
The dielectric-spectroscopic and ac conductivity studies firstly carried out on layered manganese doped Sodium Lithium Trititanates ($Na_{1.9}Li_{0.1}Ti_3O_7$). The dependence of loss tangent (Tan$\delta$), relative permittivity ($\varepsilon_r$) and ac conductivity ($\sigma_{ac}$) in temperature range 373-723K and frequency range 100Hz-1MHz studied on doped derivatives. Various conduction mechanisms are involved during temperature range of study like electronic hopping conduction in lowest temperature region, for MSLT-1 and MSLT-2. The hindered interlayer ionic conduction exists with electronic hopping conduction for MSLT-3. The associated interlayer ionic conduction exists in mid temperature region for all doped derivatives. In highest temperature region modified interlayer ionic conduction along with the polaronic conduction, exist for MSLT-1, MSLT-2, and only modified interlayer ionic conduction for MSLT-3. The loss tangent (Tan$\delta$) in manganese-doped derivatives of layered $Na_{1.9}Li_{0.1}Ti_3O_7$ ceramic may be due to contribution of electric conduction, dipole orientation, and space charge polarization. The corresponding increase in the values of relative permittivity may be due to increase in number of dipoles in the interlayer space while the corresponding decrease in the values of relative permittivity may be due to the increase in the leakage current due to the higher doping.
