  • Microarray data, obtained from DNA chip technologies, is the measurement of the expression level of thousands of genes in cells or tissues. It is used for gene function prediction or cancer diagnosis based on gene expression patterns. Among diverse methods for data analysis, the Bayesian network represents the relationships among data attributes in the form of a graph structure. This property enables us to discover various relations among genes and the characteristics of the tissue (e.g., the cancer type) through microarray data analysis. However, most of the present microarray data sets are so sparse that it is difficult to apply general analysis methods, including Bayesian networks, directly. In this paper, we harness an efficient structural learning algorithm and data dimensionality reduction in order to analyze microarray data using Bayesian networks. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of real microarray data, i.e., the NC160 data set. And its usefulness was evaluated based on the accuracy of the teamed Bayesian networks on representing the known biological facts.

  • Computational anthropomorphic phantoms are computer models of human anatomy used in the calculation of radiation dose distribution in the human body upon exposure to a radiation source. Depending on the manner to represent human anatomy, they are categorized into two classes: stylized and tomographic phantoms. Stylized phantoms, which have mainly been developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), describe human anatomy by using simple mathematical equations of analytical geometry. Several improved stylized phantoms such as male and female adults, pediatric series, and enhanced organ models have been developed following the first hermaphrodite adult stylized phantom, Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD)-5 phantom. Although stylized phantoms have significantly contributed to dosimetry calculation, they provide only approximations of the true anatomical features of the human body and the resulting organ dose distribution. An alternative class of computational phantom, the tomographic phantom, is based upon three-dimensional imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and computed tomography (CT). The tomographic phantoms represent the human anatomy with a large number of voxels that are assigned tissue type and organ identity. To date, a total of around 30 tomographic phantoms including male and female adults, pediatric phantoms, and even a pregnant female, have been developed and utilized for realistic radiation dosimetry calculation. They are based on MRI/CT images or sectional color photos from patients, volunteers or cadavers. Several investigators have compared tomographic phantoms with stylized phantoms, and demonstrated the superiority of tomographic phantoms in terms of realistic anatomy and dosimetry calculation. This paper summarizes the history and current status of both stylized and tomographic phantoms, including Korean computational phantoms. Advantages, limitations, and future prospects are also discussed.

  • Oral verruciform xanthoma (OVX) is an uncommon lesion that appears on the oral mucosa. The aim of this paper was to discuss the probable etiopathogenesis of OVX in the hard palate, reinforcing the importance of including this lesion in the differential diagnosis of verrucous lesions. A 43-year-old male smoker presented with a painless lesion with a verrucous surface and erythematous spots on the hard palate. Excisional biopsy revealed oral mucosa consisting of hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, and elongated rete pegs. Subjacent connective tissue showed numerous foam cells with clear cytoplasm and pyknotic nucleus, negative on periodic acid-Schiff staining. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed foam cells positive for anti-CD68 antibody, while anti-KI-67 antibody was restricted to the basal layer of the oral epithelium. A final diagnosis of OVX was established. The patient showed no signs of recurrence after seven months of follow-up. Physical trauma and smoking habits can be directly related to the etiology of verruciform xanthoma because the lesion is chronic and inflammatory with slow growth, and sites if high trauma are more often affected by such a lesion. The hard palate is the second most commonly affected site, and local trauma caused by smoking can be a cause of this type of lesion.

  • The initial X-ray images obtained from a digital X-ray machine have a wide data range and uneven brightness level than normal images. In particular, in Chest X-ray images, it is necessary to improve naturally all of the parts such as ribs, spine, tissue, etc. These X-ray images can not be improved enough from conventional image quality enhancement algorithms because their characteristics are different from ordinary images'. This paper proposes to eliminate unnecessary background from an input image and expand the histogram range of the image. Then, we adjust the weight per frequency band of the image for improvement of contrast and sharpness. Finally, jointly taking the advantages of global contrast enhancement and local contrast enhancement methods we obtain an improved X-ray image suitable for effective diagnosis in comparison with the existing methods. Experimental results show quantitatively that the proposed algorithm provides better X-ray images in terms of the discrete entropy and saturation than the previous works.

  • In this paper, the algorithm that can automatically segment the lung, the airway and the pulmonary vessels in a chest CT was proposed. The proposed method is progressed in three steps. In the first step, the lung and the airway are segmented by the region growing law through the optimal threshold and three-dimensional labeling. In the second, from the start point to the first carina of the airway is segmented by the deduction operation, and the next airway of the bifurcations are segmented by applying a variable threshold technique. In the third step, the left/right lungs are divided by the restoration process for the lung, and the outside of lungs for abnormal is checked by applying the advanced rolling ball algorithm, and if abnormal is found, that part is removed, and it is restored to the normal lungs by connecting the outside of the lung in the form of second-order polynomial. Finally, pulmonary vessels are segmented by applying the three-dimensional connected component labeling method and three-dimensional region growing method. As the results of simulation, it could be confirmed that the pulmonary vascular is accurately divided without loss of tissue around lung.

  • Recently, instruments and systems related on biological technology have been enormously developed. Particularly, many researches for biological cell injection have been carried out. Usually, excessive contact force occurring when the end-effector and a biological cell contact might make a damage on the cell. Unfortunately, the excessive force could easily destroy the membrane and tissue of the cell. In order to overcome the problem, we proposed a new injection system for biological cell manipulation. The proposed injection system can measure the contact force between a pipette and a cell by using a force sensor. Also, we used vision technology to correctly guide the tip of the pipette to the cell. Consequently, the proposed injection system could safely manipulate the biological cells without any damage. This paper presents the introduction of our new injection system and design concepts of the new micro end-effector. Through a series of experiments the proposed injection system shows the possibility of application for precision biological cell manipulation such as DNA operation.

  • This paper introduces a biocompatible packaging system for implantable medical device having a hermetic sealing, such that a perfect physical and chemical isolation between electronic medical system and human body (including tissue, body fluids, etc.) is obtained. The hermetic packaging includes an electronic MEMS pressure sensor, power charging system, and bluetooth communication system to wirelessly measure variation of capacitance. The packaging was acquired by Quartz direct bonding and $CO_2$ laser welding, with a size of width $ 6cm{\times}length\;10cm{\times}lheight\;3cm$. Hermetic sealing of the packaged system was tested by changing the pressure in a hermetic chamber using a precision pressure controller, from atmospheric to 900 mmHg. We found that the packaged system retained the same count or capacitance values with sensor 1 - 25,500, sensor 2 - 26,000, and sensor 3 - 20,800, at atmospheric as well as 900 mmHg pressure for 5 hours. This result shows that the packaging method has perfect hermetic sealing in any environment of the human body pressure.

  • This paper reports two cases of schwannomas arising from the oral cavity. One is an intraoral ancient schwannoma located at the left cheek, which evolved over a period of 13 years. The tumor was a well-demarcated buccal mass, which was located in the left lower first premolar area, with an obliterated the buccal vestibule, leaving the overlying mucosa intact. The second case was a central intraosseous schwannoma located from the left lower 1st molar periapical area to the left 3rd molar periapical area. Pathologically, the first mass was composed of the spindle shaped tumor cells with wavy nuclei beneath the fibroconnective tissue of the gingiva but second case mass was not. Occasional nuclear pleomorphism was observed but mitosis or necrosis was absent. There were Antoni A and B areas along with strong, diffuse staining with the S-100 protein. Ancient schwannomas were diagnosed. Schwannoma is a slow-growing benign tumor, and an ancient schwannoma that shows cellular atypism is a variant of a schwannoma caused by purely degenerative changes. To date, only limited cases of ancient schwannomas in the oral cavity have been reported.

  • The Applegate-Kennedy classification, the drawing of removable partial denture design using color coding, the selective tissue placement impression method in case of Class I and Class II removable partial dentures, the design of the swing lock attachment of an alternative approach to conventional removable partial denture, the design of the intracoronal or extracoronal attachment, and the removable partial denture design using a rotational path were presented. The following conclusions from the above things were presented : 1. The swing lock attachment removable partial denture can be effective to an alternative approach when the design of conventional removable partial denture is improper with markedly mobile remaining teeth or missing key abutments. 2. Intracoronal or extracoronal attachments must be selected care-fully considering the conditions of the abutment teeth and alveolar ridge whether more occlusal loads to the abutment teeth or to the alveolar ridge are distributed. 3. It must be almost prerequisite that a functional impression is taken in case of Class I and class II removable partial dentures and in case of tooth-borne removable partial dentures, a removable partial denture using rotational path is strong, hygienic, esthetic, and can be accomplished successfully in the clinical aspect when it is properly designed and fabricated through the complete understanding of an indication and a principle. 4. All necessary informations must be achieved with carefully investigated surveying procedure according to each clinical case by Applegate-Kennedy classification which can be helpful and useful in the clinical application and it is important that dentists themselves must be in the habit of drawing a reasonable partial denture design using a color coding in the paper sheet.

  • Brownish discoloration develops very rapidly in the storage of dried oyster. This undesirable browning is mainly caused by the series of reactions of sugar-amino condensation, enzymatic oxidation of tyrosine and/or the oxidative rancidity of lipids in the tissue of oyster. Sulfites are commonly used as inhibitors for Maillard type browning reactions in agricultural products. The inhibitory effect of sulfite treatment on canned oysters was also confirmed in some investigations. The results suggested that sulfites not only work on blocking tile amadori rearrangement but also on the reduction of free tyrosine which retards the progress of enzymatic oxidation of tyrosine tyrosinase. In this paper, the effect of sodium sulfite treatment on the reduction of reducing sugar and free tyrosine as a function i)f browning inhibition in oyster was tested and other treatment with glucose-oxidase and yeast were also applied. In preparation of samples, fresh oysters were soaked in sodium sulfite solution by various concentration for different treating times, washed in running water to remove the sulfite residue, and finally dried in the shade. In the result, the treatment of sodium sulfite was certainly effective on the reduction of both free tyrosine and reducing sugars in fresh oyster. The best results were obtained by the treatment of 0.5M sodium sulfite solution for 60 minutes each for soaking and washing. Treatment with, glucose-oxidase and yeast solutions, however, did appear somewhat effective but it required so much time for a certain effect that it seemed not practically applicable.
