A Study of Eliminating the Vehicle Noise of Engine RPM from the Friction Noise between Tire and Road Pavement by Using a NCPX Method (NCPX 계측방법을 이용한 타이어/노면 사이에서 발생하는 마찰소음에 대한 차량자체에서 발생하는 소음 제거 연구)

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to eliminate the noise of the vehicle after measuring the friction noise obtained from the NCPX (Noble Close ProXimity) method. The pure friction noise between the tire and road pavement could be determined from filtering the compositeness of sound and the influence of the vehicle noise. METHODS: The noise magnitude could be determined by analyzing the sound pressure level (SPL) and sound power level (PWL) along with the noise frequency of a FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis as well as CPB (Constant Percentage Bandwidth) analysis. RESULTS: When the test for measuring the friction noise originated somewhere between tire and road pavement is performed with NCPX method, it must be fulfilled by attaching the surface microphone near the tire. In this condition, the surface microphone can measure the friction noise occurred at between tire and pavement, the chassis noise from the engine and power transfer units, the fluctuating aerodynamic noise, and the turbulence noise directly affected to the surface microphone. By using the NCPX method, the noise occurred at the vehicle must be eliminated for measuring the friction noise between tire and pavement from the traffic noise. CONCLUSIONS: The vehicle's testing engine noise depends on the vehicle and road types. The effect of vehicle's engine noise is less than the friction noise occurred at between tire and pavement at less than 1% effect.

Performance Evaluation of Exposed Aggregate Texturing in Concrete Pavement Based on In-Situ Noise Measurements

  • Environmental noise at high intensities directly affects human health by causing hearing loss. Although scientific evidence currently is not conclusive, noise is suspected of causing or aggravating other diseases. Environmental noise indirectly affects human welfare by interfering with sleep, thought, and conversation. Noise emission from motorized vehicle includes power unit noise, tire/pavement noise and aerodynamic noise. Among them, tire/pavement noise is noise emission from interaction of the tire and road surface when the vehicle cruises over the surface of pavement. In general, portland cement concrete(PCC) pavement is known to create more noise than asphaltic surfaces though it has the advantage of durability and superior surface friction. However, the results of preliminary laboratory test showed exposed aggregate concrete(EAC) has and effect on reducing tire/pavement noise. Based on the laboratory test. pilot construction of exposed aggregate concrete pavement was completed and series of in-situ measurements were conducted for noise analysis including the pass-by noise measurement and the close-proximity method. Conclusively, it is expected that tire/pavement noise represent significant portion of noise levels at higher frequencies and it would be reduced on special textures of pavement such as exposed aggregate concrete.

  • Noise has become an environmental pollution that affects most peoples' health, comfort or general well being. there are many sources of noise, but one of them clearly dominates road traffic noise. It has traditionally been associated with engine and exhaust noise of vehicles. However the emission and propagation of noise from these sources were partly reduced, while at the same time the noise emission from the tire/road interaction on a relative scale became more and more prominent Generally, Portland cement concrete(PCC) pavements have the advantage of durability and superior surface friction when compared to most dense-graded asphalt. However, It is known that PCC pavements create more noise than asphaltic surfaces due to the noise from interaction of tire and pavement surface. Therefore, recent research has shown some new concrete pavement textures to be worth further examination. So in this paper, we considered the 9 types of low noise concrete pavements to evaluate tire/pavement noise.

The Effect of the Exposed Aggregate Concrete Pavement on the Reducing Traffic Noise Emission

  • Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements are more durable and have superior surface friction compared to most dense-graded asphalt. However, data collected to date generally show PCC pavements to create more noise than asphaltic surfaces. Recent research has shown that some of the new concrete pavement textures are worthy of further examination. One of these, exposed aggregate surfaces, appear to provide better noise quality characteristics as well as good frictional characteristics and durability. In this paper, we considered the relationship between noise level and various textures of exposed aggregate concrete (EAC) pavement by tire impact noise measurement. As the results of that, it was suggested that optimum surface texture and manufacturing condition of EAC in order to reduce tire and pavement interaction noise. Conclusively, we would like to recommend optimum condition of EAC pavement at the respects of materials and treatment. Furthermore, Frequency spectrum as well as A-weighted noise level was also evaluated to analyze properties of noise between PCC and EAC.

However, data collected to date generally show PCC pavements to create more noise than asphaltic surfaces. As the results of research, surfaces of exposed aggregate, tining and grooving concrete pavements appear to provide better noise quality characteristics as well as good frictional characteristics and durability. In this paper, several methods of texturing were considered to reduce tire/pavement noise. As the results of this paper, PCC pavements with special texturing have superior surface friction as well as noise reductions when compared to conventional PCC pavement. Especially, Exposed Aggregate Concrete (EAC) surface appears to provide better noise quality characteristics. Conclusively, if overall noise and safety are considered simultaneously, EAC pavement that provides satisfactory friction as well as better noise reductions is suggested.

Analysis of Texture Characteristics of Asphalt Pavements (아스팔트 포장의 노면조직 특성 분석)

  • PURPOSES : Pavement textures can be categorized into four according to wavelength: microtexture, macrotexture, megatexture (roads), and roughness. Pavement surface texture influences a number of aspects of tire-pavement interaction such as wet-weather friction, tire-pavement noise, splash, spray, tire-wear, and rolling resistance. In particular, macrotexture is the pavement surface characteristic that considerably impacts tire-pavement noise. In general, it can be demonstrated that tire-pavement noise increases with the increase of texture depth and wavelength. Recently, mean profile depth (MPD) and wavelength have been used to evaluate tire-pavement noise. This study aimed to identify the relationship between mean profile depth and average wavelength for asphalt pavement based on the information obtained on a number of asphalt pavement sections. METHODS : Profile data were collected from a number of expressway sections in Korea. In addition, mean profile depth and average wavelength were calculated by using this profile data. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the correlationship between mean profile depth and average wavelength. RESULTS:This study demonstrates a linear relationship between mean profile depth and average wavelength for asphalt concrete pavement. CONCLUSIONS :The strong relationship between mean profile depth and average wavelength of asphalt pavement was determined in this study.

A Study on Slow Rolling tire for Prediction of the Tire Forces and Moments (회전하는 타이어의 접지면 동특성 예측에 관한 연구)

  • It is known that tire plays an important role to the dynamic performances of a vehicle such as noise, vibration, ride and handling. Therefore, force and moment measurements have been a part of the traditional tire engineering process. In this paper, a computational analysis technique has been explored. A FE model is made to simulate inflation, vertical load due to the vehicle weight, and the slow rolling of a radial tire. A rigid surface with Coulomb friction is included in the model to simulate the slow rolling contact. The tire slip during the in-plane motion of the rigid surface is calculated. Results are presented for both lateral and vertical loads, as well as straight ahead free rolling. The calculated and measured tire slips are in good correlation.   • Generally, Portland cement concrete(PCC) pavements have the advantage of durability and superior surface friction when compared to most dense-graded asphalt. However, It is known that PCC pavements create more noise than asphaltic surfaces due to the noise from interaction of tire and pavement surface. Recently exposed aggregate concrete(EAC) pavement was sugested to reduce traffic noise. So in this paper, we considered several materials and mixture proportions for proper depth of exposed aggregate which was measured by the sand patching test, and then according to those relationships, we tried to find out dosage of retarding agents and optimum mixture proportions for expecting good effects to noise reduction. It were also evaluated sound level at every conditions of surface texture as like depth of aggregate exposed, profile peak, distance of aggregate and types of aggregate.

Noise Reduction of Concrete Pavement by Texture Design (콘크리트 포장 표면처리 방법에 따른 소음 감소 방안 연구)

  • This study tries to compare the noise difference by various surface treatments and to propose appropriate tinning methods. As literature reviews, longitudinally tined pavement is effective to reduce noise made between tire and pavement surface. Various surface treatments were applied to some sections of test road. In case of car, about 2$\sim$3dB(A) was reduced in the section of uniform space 18mm longitudinal tinning. The peak frequency point for truck case happened between 200 and 600 Hz. The maximum noise of car was measured at about 1000Hz. Therefore, it Is proved that surface treatment methods can have a large affect on noise generation. With a result that friction test, the transverse tined pavement showed better frictional characteristics than the longitudinally tined pavement, but as a whole it came out satisfactory result. Results from this study are of early age, so it is required to check the performance continuously.

  • Water on a road surface can lower the coefficient of friction of vehicle tires and it involves lots of risks. One way to prevent water from staying is to cut many "rain grooves" into the edges of the pavement parallel. Such grooves, however, can exert unwanted side forces, particularly on passenger tires, which cause "Groove Wander" making the drivers uncomfortable. The "Groove Wander" is somewhat related to vehicle geometry, but is more strongly related to interaction between road grooves and tire tread's longitudinal grooves. This thesis tries to examine principles to estimate "Groove Wandering" effect focusing on the design of longitudinal groove. Additionally, it studied how to reduce pipe resonance longitudinal grooves form in the contact patch.
